First choice: Limsa Lominsa

Now: Limsa Lominsa

I actually liked Gridania more, but the music outside the city got really repetitive and annoying fast. The outside area looks like some sort of maze and makes all the copied landscape stand out more. The characters from the Air Ship; I dislike them very much. Really a shame because I think the city is pretty.

Ul'dah is great looking and probably the easiest city to traverse inside. Mining and Goldsmith guild was a major draw as well as the Gladiator guild AND the Arena. The concept of the Arena is just fantastic and interesting. The Storyline for this starting city seems really exciting and the characters involved have intriguing personalities. However, the surrounding area is pretty bland. I know it's a desert, but it's just not my thing. I'll probably be here a lot though for the Guilds and Arena.

Limsa is kind of annoying to get around in and I think they could do with moving stuff closer together or adding more paths connecting areas. I like the idea of a port city that looks like it was raised right out of the water! The mission for the city is really mysterious and the idea of rival gangs within the city and on the sea is cool. The armorer, blacksmith, culinarian, fishing, and (future) musketeer guilds all being here is very convenient for me. The outside areas are really colorful and open (in most places). I felt at home as a Botonist, and there were no shortage of mining spots. Weather effects here looked amazing and you can almost always see the ocean. Then they released that you could build your own boats...

SHORT VERSION: I want to be a pirate!

Ul'dah, I love limsa though. It was the city that I made most of my characters is in but I ended up playing it to death. I know most of the area really well around there now as well. But for launch I dont want to feel totally burnt out so seeing as I liked Ul'dah a lot too(especially the story) I thought I might as well join my friend there :) also seeing as Im playing a pugilist Ul'dah was also the best choice :)

Now just to find a casual Linkshellfor me and my friend :3

I'm going with Limsa Lominsa . I love Gridania, but I plan to do armorer and it'll probably be to my benefit to start where the guild is.

Norg d'Oria for me.
Gridania feels a bit too much like Windurst, they've should atleast made it a bit more unique.
And that other place? Uldaman, or whatever... no thanks, deserts don't appeal to me.

San'doria(Or whatever SE named it)

Mostly due to the water front, they did a very good job at making it feel like a pirate port.

I was really liking gridania until I actually started playing there. I was expecting a deep forest like the dev team has been touting for so long now, but instead it's just a little pathway etched into grass-covered stone. I spent all of 5 minutes in Ul'dah, most of that time spent admiring the onion helm and talking to wenches, and I like that more than any the other two.

Limsa.

Gridania is nice, but the outside areas are too confined with the current placement of aggressive (and relatively strong) mobs, especially during leve quests when they're between you and the target. Ul'dah wasn't bad either, nicely set up similar to Limsa and the surrounding areas, but since I intend to main Marauder and Armorer I think it would help a lot to start in the city that's home to both Guilds.

Original idea: Gridania

I was thinking Gridania because at the time the location of the alchemist guild wasn't known. I made the guess that it'd be in Gridania because the blurb on alchemist says that it uses Lalafell mysticism and Mi'qote herbalism, or something like that.

Well, I made my first OB character in Gridania. He was also a Lalafell, as I had thought I might try something different as I had played an Elvaan in XI.

Turns out what I wanted was in Ul'Dah. So I remade my character, going back to Elezen (actually I made him look like a slightly older version of my XI character, greying hair and such), and starting in Ul'Dah. I enjoyed Ul'Dah more than I did Gridania.

So where will I be starting? Ul"Dah. Although for the day-to-day playtime I doubt that'll mean much, I plan on traveling to the other two very early on as I will have at least one linkshell to distribute, and since I want to initially focus on DoH, I will want to be able to do leves in all three cities for my crafting experience.

Im reading a lot of the reasons relating to disciple of war/magic guilds. Fact is , even as a conjurer it is extremely rare that you will visit the conjurer guild in gridania ( only wen u have nuff marks to buy a spell, and relatively end game there'll be some class story quests) , the fact that travel is so easy in FFXIV ,makes that a poor and uninformed excuse for chosing a city

On the other hand crafting/land cities, is a stronger reason

Chose Gridania.

randomly chose there at beginning of beta, and was intrigued by the story, and so didnt even check out the others.

I didnt even check out Limsa, and was only briefly in the other city. Want to do the exploring after it all counts. I am assuming you will be able to change nations at a later point like you di in FFXI.

Since we still don't know how exactly guilds are going to be handled (though they're almost guaranteed to have more use than they do now) you can't really say picking a city based on what Guilds it has is a bad choice. Picking a city you're most comfortable with is likely a "better" choice, but don't ask for someone else's plans and then call them poor or uninformed when they apparently don't match up to what you would do. Besides, like you said travel is currently really easy (if not time consuming) and it's going to be faster and easier during retail so what does it matter if someone picks a city purely based on what guilds it may or may not have?

jeez, was just trying to inform others. i dont see why youre being very defensive. SE told us that guilds will have class quests, much like main quests that involve a story. Those are likely to be rare( maybe every 10 ranks?) . Many ppl ingame say something like this:
' i like X ,but my guilds are in Y, so ill start in Y'. Imo that is a poor reason , and what for are the forums, if not an exchange of opinions

Starting in Gridania on my Miqo'te, Uldah on my Hyur. Reasoning: for guild convenience as well as the backgrounds I imagined for both of them. Aaand, yep. Both of those were what I've been planning on all along for each character.

Not being defensive since your comment didn't necessarily apply to me. I just think it's backwards to ask for someone's opinion about where they decide to start and then when they give you a perfectly acceptable one you turn around and say "Hey, that's a poor and uninformed choice". What makes it bad? Something we can only speculate about until the 22nd? Someone could say they would start in Ul'dah just for the Migo'te hooker and even if I think that's an odd reason to pick a city who am I to call it bad in any way?

It may not have been your intent to come off like that (mildly condescending), but your wording sure conveyed it. "Uninformed" and "poor" aren't the words I would have picked.
