Security Token QuestionFollow

I have a Square Enix Members account right now that I used to play FFXI back in March 2010, I also used this for the FFXIV beta. In April 2010, I attached a security token to the account to get a mog satchel. The battery on it quickly died for some reason so I removed it from the account and didn't care much to replace it since all I really wanted was the satchel.

Well, this time around I think I would like the security from it. My question is, am I able to use this SE account I already have and add the token I get from the collector's edition to it? Or will I not be able to since I already had a token attached to this account and removed?

I know SE doesn't like people using multiple accounts, but what about simply having multiple accounts? I don't actually play FFXI anymore so I wouldn't mind ditching the account I used for XI and beta, then just creating a new one for XIV. Can I do that or might it cause problems?

As far as I'm aware you should be able to freely attach and remove tokens from accounts as you see fit. They're only bound to the account as long as you have it registered, or at least that's how any other token I've ever used worked.

I remember some warning that if I removed it I couldn't add *something* again. And I couldn't remember what the something was. Were they just referring to that one particular token I had? Meaning I should have no problems adding this new token?

Yes, the new token will work. The way the tokens work (as described by SE) is that once you remove a linked token from your account, that token will never work again and you will have to buy a new one if you change your mind about wanting security in the future. It's only the token you removed that will never work again, not tokens in general.

I vaguely remember that one you put a token on a account, you can use it. Once it was removed from the account that token can no longer be used. You should be able to add the new one on your account and be able to use it.

I currently still use the one i got for the satchel and will until it dies... then will remove it and add the new one from the CE. I've been fortunate..... my orginal token has been going strong and had it about a idk.. maybe 18 months.... its been a long time since i ordered it.

Might be wrong but not sure.. can always email their support to find out the answer.

It's silly that once you remove the token it basically becomes dead. I don't see the point or benefit in wasting 10 bucks like that, but SE always did have an odd brand of logic.

Unless you consider the fact, if your acct somehow DID get hijacked, and you were using a token, you'd want to cancel it and prevent someone else from using it. Or in any case, what reason would you have for removing it anyway? That's you automatically wasting $10 if you aren't using it for what it was intended for.

It's basic security. You don't want to leave a gun laying around, with serial numbers registered to you if you weren't using it. Anyone could pick it up, use it, and all blame would likely go to you. SE is just covering any possibilities of misuse.

True, but if someone hijacked your account without your token canceling the token wouldn't do anything. If someone has your token and your account info, canceling the token doesn't help either. There's no combination of your token and someone trying to get into your account that bricking an unregistered token would alleviate that I can think of.

To use your gun analogy, it would be like having a trigger lock on your handgun. You remove the lock to do basic maintenance or use the weapon, but once the lock has been removed it can't be used again and instead you need to go buy a new one. Just like a trigger lock the security token is useless by itself and disabling it after the fact seems to make security worse from a logical standpoint. All it does is force you to buy a new one or go without the added security.

I wish SE would just make an iPhone/Android/whatever Authenticator app like Blizzard does for WoW. It costs nothing and you always have it with you. I can't log into SE's official site as a member when I'm at work because I keep the token at home (and you have to use it when logging in to the site as well as the game).

I've had a token on my acct since they were released.
Between ffxi,ffxiv beta,member's site,beta site,and acct management site,I'm starting
to get concerned about the battery life, lol.

If the token dies,I won't be able to logon to the acct management site to remove it,correct?
I assume then a call to SE would be required.

I decided to remove it,but I'm hestitent to do it this close to launch for fear of some
***** up or delay associated with launch activity.

I had a token for ffxi then took it off. Pain in the *** to use it everytime you logg in. I played on ps2 then moved to 360. I was never worried of getting hacked because on my PC i never used the ID and Password to log into anything. I will be playing on my PC till the PS3 version comes out so i might use the token <New one with CE> just because i'll be on my PC. I have a great security on my PC but you never know. The only reson i got the token in the first place was to get the extra storage in FFXI.
