Not that this is really a surprise or isightful information, it looks like they are already working on expansions for FFXIV.. good news is better than no news. Hopefully we can look forward to an expansion sooner than later.. Personally, I can't wait for Samurai to come out.

If they have time to push one out, I agree with this. It will help with the PS3 sales i would think.

FFXI & PS2 =/= FFXIV & PS3

That said, I imagine the PS3 will have Arcanist and Musketeer to look forward to come March 8th of 2011.

I think it is most unlikely that there will be any kind of storyline based expansion a la Zilart when the PS3 version is released, if there was then PS3 players would be getting it for free whilst PC players would have to pay for it. Better to wait a few months after PS3 release and make everyone pay for it.

From the article the OP linked:
Q: Final Fantasy XI was supported by copious amounts of expansions and add-on packs years after release. Can we expect a similar level of support for XIV?
A: "A part of the development team has already started working on expansions"

There is no indication of when the first expansion will appear at all, none, pointless even guessing at this stage.

At JP release I had to pay for Zilart expansion but on NA PC release it came packaged with FFXI so they're not strangers to that type of situation. There's no indication but it's actually most logical to release an expansion around PS3 release timing wise:

FFXIV PC - September 22nd/30th
FFXIV PS3 - March 2011.

The first expansion doesn't even have to be "big" it could be "Zilart big" which adds more story and a handful of areas since they already said classes will come in updates. Speculation is never pointless because it stimulates conversation on a forum.

They won't be shipping an expansion with PS3 release. 6 months from retail to first expansion is unheard of. They might have a major content patch, but content patch =/= expansion. Something typically gets labeled an expansion when you have to go to a store and buy it off the shelf. In order to warrant charging people for a retail box, the scope of content has to be fairly substantial, and 6 months to work up that much content is not at all realistic. JP PS2 release -> NA PC release was about 1.5 years. The game had been out in Japan for 13 months before RotZ was released.

I am thinking we won't have to wait that long. They probably have a bunch of stuff that is almost finished, but didn't make it into release. Still, i agree, 6 months is highly doubtful. Most of the stuff, as you say, will probably come in the form of version updates.

I would think they'd try to come out with an expansion ASAP for the sake of only having two mage jobs. For the people who only like to play such classes (I am not one) people will probably get sick of these two fairly quickly.

I would be disappointed if an expansion was released in 6 months. It would be as if they withheld content just so we could pay for it.

They said they may not wait for expansions to release new jobs. They have repeatedly mentioned that jobs may be released in patches.

I think that's become industry standard these days...I've made my peace with it if it's a game I really enjoy. Seems like it'd be nice to give the PS3 crowd something after the simultaneous release plans were botched...

Didn't they say new jobs would be released in content patches while the expansions would feature new story lines and quests? Meaning: We might get new jobs before the first expansion. Do not remember where I read this but I'm sure it was in an interview with SE.

I would honestly be beyond shocked if they actually release new jobs with patches. Totally shocked.

One thing to keep in mind: It takes ~2-3 Months for most companies to produce their shippable product and get it out the door, especially considering that they (SE) develop for so many countries. Assuming that they are working on the code now, and want to determine character balance, and play methods people like/don't like. It will be 2-3 months after the release before they know for sure what they want to do. So, at that point we are already sitting 4-6 months out from the original release before they can get something in our hands (by physical media). Put in the fact that they will be producing the disks for the PS3 around that time as well (add the Sony overhead for production on that), and yeah, 6 months is actually a pretty tight schedule for them. While it would be nice for us (which I think is why they stated they *might* release a class or two early), it is very unlikely we will see anything more than bug fixes before March.

As well, pushing things out too fast will cause two major problems. Chance of defects go through the roof the more you rush (there is never enough development time), and customer expectations are higher the faster you release (seems it should be the opposite, however, the faster you do it, the faster people expect more). These are some pretty standard tenets (and many people in these forums have stated them in their own way).

So, here's to hoping it's March:).
(On a side note, if it is released in March, it will be free for the PS3 users. That's their carrot to buy, while the PC players carrot is the early release and chance to develop earlier. PS3 players will have an equal (or nearly) chance to explore the new areas in the expansion so they don't feel left out, or shafted that they have to buy 2 games just to play.

What the ****.

First of all, there are 5 unreleased regions in the Vanilla. They have to get those out before even considering an expansion.

3 regions close to the cities- most likely containing the capital of beast-tribes

2 regions with the 'fallen' cities of Shar layan and Ala mhigo. Most likely saved for the conclusion of Vanilla story.

Not to mention they need to fill up Coerthas and Mor Dhona with content as well.

It's going to take a while, guys.
