I know absolutely nothing about PC's and would like to get a few opinions about this build.

http://pc.ncix.com/ncixpc/ncixpc.cfm?uuid=98F8008C-80DB-4F47-AF8538F1E7D87A80-3008947

Overkill? Can I cut corners to save a bit? Should I up the ante with the processor? Do I need the more expensive power supply? Better cooling?

Thank you everyone in advance for any input and hopefully within the next few hours I will make the purchase.

Um, the only issue i see with that computer is the Radeon HD 5870. Its a great card, but many, many people have said that ATI based cards are not working properly for this game. I'm sure this will be fixed at or near release tomorrow, but just a heads up that the best PC in the world with the wrong graphics card will still make the game crash.

If you can change it, I'd look for a nice, high end Nvidia card. Otherwise, good deal and cool case!

I have two machines, one with dual 5770's and one with a single 5770 and they run just fine. I was under the impression that the ATI glitch was isolated to Beta Phase 2 and part of 3?

How are the GeForce Cards reacting to the game? And thank you for the input. Much appreciated.

Looks like a fine build. Only thing I'd recommend is switching the case to the CM 690 II; it's a much better pick overall, especially in terms of cooling and cable management, but of course that sort of thing comes down to personal preference. I wouldn't call it overkill, it definitely fits the price, so as long as you're willing to spend that much, there's really no need to cut corners. You definitely don't need a more expensive power supply, and the CPU is a good choice. If you plan on doing any overclocking (which that model practically begs for), you'll want to pick up either the Corsair H50 or H70 heatsink. Beyond that, no need to worry about any other cooling options, especially if you go for the CM690.

Incorrect. Mine and my sister's ATI's worked perfectly fine. However both Nvidia (tested 470) and Ati (our XFX 5770) had a shadow issue with the game. Also FFXIV were eating up Nvidias like candy.

Where was it said that ATIs weren't working with FFXIV? It's understandable if you dislike ATIs and like Nvidia, but please share sources that said the other side didn't work with the game since I've heard more problems coming from Nvidia cards than I heard from ATI, namely FFXIV turning your PC into an oven with Nvidia.

It was isolated in Phase 2 and fixed in Phase 3 just before open beta.

My ATI 4890 and 5870 both blow this game away at 1080P

This was only true when they had not released new drivers.

I have a very similar build to that computer.. actually almost identical.. and I'm running the game with 60+fps on max settings. The price isn't too bad considering you don't know much about computers, and I'm assuming building it yourself is out of the question. You could possibly save ~$300 purchasing the items yourself and putting it together, but considering you stated you have little PC knowledge, having something prebuilt for you is definately a reasonable option.

As far as ATI cards not working with this game.. I find that comment unwarranted.. I'm running a 5870 myself, and haven't had any issues whatsoever with graphical performance, it runs any and every game I've thrown at it maxed out.

Overkill? - maybe
Cut corners? - I wouldn't
Up the CPU? - no need
PSU? - it's fine
Better Cooling? - Yes, if you OC the CPU

Seriously though, have you put a lot of thought into this.. or was this an impulse buy? I mean if you have the cash, by all means.. but if you took a little time, "building" your own computer is actually a very rewarding and insightful experience.. plus you save money ^^

Zeruin. . . Thanks for the input. I have been researching this for a while now and have had several conversations with fellow gamers/pc users about tons of different builds. As stated, you are totally correct that building the thing myself is out of the question. I intend to mainly use the machine for gaming but since I will be using my HDTV as a display I was considering using it as my main source for other media.

Ideally, I wanted to buy a mac mini and run it but that was not possible due to its graphic card limitations.

To conclude, it's kinda impulse kinda not. I am a huge FFXI player and I am really looking forward to this new game so ya I may be buying into the hype, but also, it may not hurt me to have a PC in the house either. I do a lot of business in tons of different media types and I know that I have had limitations with clients for only owning Mac.

*Haven't bought it yet

Well I don't see anyting wrong with the build.. it looks like you've done some research, so like I said, if you got the cash, go for it.

For reference, my computer is as follows.. i7-920 OC at 4.0, ATI HD 5870, 6GB Corsair Dominator, EVGA X58 SLI LE mobo, Corsair TX750W, HAF 922, Samsung 1TB HD, Asus 24x DVD RW.. and etc. As you can see, very similar.. and I run everything on max with 60+fps.

Just want to chime in and say that I'm having absolutely no problems running FF XIV with almost the same card (by ATI).

Ahh, good to hear about the ATI thing, a friend of mine had a ATI HD 5870 and said it was all over the place during beta, and he was in open beta. Must have been an isolated glitch. I do remember others posting on here that ATI cards had similar problems, but like everyone has said, this must have been fixed with a driver update.

I have a 5770 and I ran the game virtually no lag on hi res medium > high settings, a 5870 would be amazing for this.

Eh? If anything, ATI has been showing higher performance than nVidia on equivalently powered cards.

Computer looks fine, I'd bump the processor up to a 950 from a 930 and then get a non-stock CPU heatsink so you can easily overclock it.

Of course, looking at the markup at all of the pieces listed there, I'm obligated to say that you could build that PC for several hundred dollars cheaper and it isn't hard to do.
