UI was deal breakerFollow

I was kind of on the fence about buying FFXIV at release, despite the fact that I was really excited about alpha/beta. The one aspect of the game that really pushed me to not order was the UI/menus. It has a lot of unnecessary redundancies, is not easy to use by any means, and doesn't really make any sense anywhere. How hard is it to make a good UI really? I'm not a game developer, but I would imagine I would have to try extra hard to make a UI this bad. The rest of the the game is not too bad, and I hope you all have fun playing.

Guess all i can say is that its beta? And possibly wait and see what people say about this aspect of the game after it launches. And if it hasn't changed maybe keep an eye out on info after patch days.

I kinda understand you, for a moment or two I wondered if I should reconsider myself. Didn't though, my copy is on its way as we speak. What I think is that this kind of UI is pretty much working as intended (minus the lag / delay most people experienced during beta phases). They want it to resemble classic RPGs and stuff. Now I'm sure that's not everybody's cup of tea, and I'm not quite sure about myself. I loved the old RPGs in their times (and still love some of them now). But...either way, for me an UI has to be practical and fast, something ya can do pretty much blind (in other words, it should not feel like it's in your way, slowing you down, etc.).

I try to have faith though, and I'm sure SE will tweak things a little bit here and there, depending on feedback over time. I'm not expecting a full UI overhaul, no. But I think, at least in the future, it will be something most of us can accept without pulling our hair out.

Me's excited, either way!

There is thread for generic complaints. Also there is a feedback forum if you would like to see the UI improved. Your input on the specific aspects you had trouble with would be useful. Also there are numerous posts from SE stating that the UI was a major concern of theirs and would be modified at release and continued to be modified thereafter.

In all seriousness, you may want to give a controller a shot.

True true, it plays pretty nicely with a controller. And I think somewhere along the open beta they made things go more fluid and stuff (unless that was just my imagination). So I'm sure it will be worked on even more in the future. Thanks to FFXI (and my long console time before MMOs crossed my path) it was no problem adapting. I tried playing it with keyboard / mouse once, but eh...it just doesn't feel right. I also played FFXI with controller only (and keyboard for chatting and macros, no mouse at all).

So me can only agree, get yerselves a controller! It's a completely different experience. And no, 'but this is a computer it should not require a controller' doesn't work as excuse. =P

I rated you down. Not because I'm sick of whining (I am), but because SE has already made it ABUNDANTLY clear that UI will be much less laggy at release. If you actually had read any of their updates, you would realize that MOST of the gripes that people have had with the beta have been addressed and will be improved for release. I know it won't be perfect off the bat, but no mmo I've ever played has been. If this one little issue has stopped you from playing... well, bye. Don't really know what you want people here to say.

He's not just talking about UI lag, and didn't really even explicitly mention it at all.

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.

Like some people have mentioned already keep and eye out for future updates etc since SE said they are not happy with how it is atm and will be working on it (maybe even for release?).

Overall I think the problem is the fact that they have the game for both PC and console and don't want there to be "any advantages" or w/e for the PC players. It really does seem a bit like a console UI (albeit not the best there either), but hopefully they can find a decent way of doing it that will not scare potential players away (And I am sure they will). Not a deal breaker for me, but I can understand the frustration.
