Not sure why you'd need to overclock that.

My last post ppl were talking about overclocking. I just really don't know what it really is other than the wiki description.

edit* we do a lot of HD rendering . . . maybe I would need to then?!?

Overclocking that is fairly simple, install the Catalyst Control center from ATI. It has an Auto-tune function that will handle all the specifics, allowing you to safely overclock it.

That system is quite easy to overclock, but will run FFXIV just fine without doing so. Actually is a very nice setup.

^^ Agree with this.
Especially since you don't really know what you're doing.
That PC will run FANTASTIC as is.

Overclocking should be very easy to do. Could probably hit 4 ghz easily.

The OPs build is almost identical to mine. Only real difference is i have 2x4Gb DDR3, blue-ray drive and a logitec controller.

I can tell your for sure, there is no reason to overclock it. Ran Beta on 1080 at highest settings (minus the Ambient Occlusion), and everything was crisp clear and smooth with no issues. Its a beast no need for the overclocking.

Should I be regretting not upgrading the audio card?

I have pro studio monitors that I use for my entertainment system speakers and figured that would warrant me not spending the extra dough. (KRK Rokit5s)

You can OC the card for sure to atleast 890Mhz but it will be louder due to increased heat.

As for the CPU, just some advice, I have had my CPU overclocked for nearly 6 months now, an i7 920, 1st at 3.8 with HT on then 4Ghz with HT off, its never enough speed.
But people are now starting to realise the i7s degrade fast when overclocked, after 5-6 months of big overclocking it is likely to become unstable, on older CPUs this process wouldnt happen as quick, more like a year or 2. I have had to reduce my OC to 3.8 with HT off, now I imagine this is gonna be a common ocurance for the months to come until I buy a new CPU.

I would try the onboard audio and see how it sounds, you can always add one later if you are not happy with it, its a very quick and easy addition. My opinion was it just didnt have enough room for adjust, ments to get the sound where I wanted it. For most things the on board audio on my asus board was fine, but for music, I knew it could be better. Fortunately, I had the creative card in my old pc.

Just as a side note, the speakers I have hooked up are Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers model VS2621. And I do have the fiber optics from the sound card hooked up to my home theater also for when I want the best sound I can get, and dont have the tv on.

Dont always assume fiber optic is better than analog btw, if the DAC on the soundcard is better than the DAC on the speaker system, analog will produce better sound quality.

A processor comes from the factory designed to run a stable speed. You can use some advanced features on some motherboards to increase that speed at the cost of extra heat and power. It takes a lot of fine tuning to find a good speed for an individual processor as the fabrication of processors makes each unique.

I agree with that, but the analog connectors go to the PC speakers, leaving the fiber open, so that went to the home theater. Thats the same as people not understanding why I still listen to records. A cd or mp3 is never gonna replace the sound of good vinyl. I'm sure somebody here will remember what a record is @.@

So. . . funny story kinda related to this.

I have an old girlfriend of mine who moved to Toronto. We are still good friends. When we hung out I had told her about FFXI but never really got into the details other than it was online and my char name. I sent her a text saying that I bought my PC finally. She asked what I bought so I told her vesta i7 to keep it simple. Apparently she googled it and the link to this post was the first thing that came up. (I tried right after and ya, there it was)

She began reading it not knowing anything about ZAM and that I am a member, my name ect. . . (had noooo clue that it was my post)

So she she's OP name Chomama (she thinks funny he always said that as a joke, but no)
She see's the dragon avatar (she thinks, hmm, he does have a large dragon tattoo and is really into them. . . but knaw!?!?!)
Keeps reading and sees when I mention something about my company (she thinks oh god oh god. . .)

Then. . . She see my FFXI char name in my sig

Next thing I know I get this text. . .

"Chomama, tell me about over-clocking baby. . . Talk gamer to me. . . bwahahahahahaha"

*sigh* guess the jig is up lol

I have the same monitors but I use them for actually monitoring. ;)

I also have a MOTU 8 pre as my 'sound card.' Combined with the rokits it's awesome for music.

However for gaming, I don't know. I was just poking fun at the list. I think for 96% of people integrated sound is good enough.

Plus you can always upgrade it later.

I always get made fun of when my audio buddies come over and see the krks by my tv

edit* thats on my g5

Depending on what resolution he plays at, that PC still has the ability to lag. I have a system with better specs, and OC'd, and for 90% of the game it runs smooth at 1920x1080, but there are still a couple areas where the frame rate drops. Overclocking is a great thing with games that aren't perfectly optimized like FFXIV. You need to squeeze every ounce of performance out of your PC.

I <3 vinyl headroom. . . warm like a blanket on a rainy day. If it wasn't for serato I would still play vinyl.
