WTF is the point of a pre-order?Follow

Okay, a bit of a rant, but bear with me:

So months and months ago I went to play a pre-order for the CE edition for FFXIV at my local EB Games/Gamestop. I paid the full amount at the time because I wanted it to feel even more like getting a present on launch day.

After receiving no phone call or email notification, as is customary once a pre-order is received in store*, I call to inquire if they have the game in stock. I'm told that they "oversold their pre-orders", and can only fill 1/4 of them, so it's first come first serve come opening tomorrow. Since I work until the evening and won't be able to go in the morning, I was of course concerned that I might not get one. I asked the salesperson when they were expecting more, and he told me a week.

Seriously, what the **** is the point of pre-ordering if it's not going to be honoured? I understand mistakes happen with stockouts and such, but I have never had this problem anywhere else with anything. Period. Also, considering I probably one of the first people to place a pre-order at that store, shouldn't I be given priority on the pick-up? Is there no first come, first serve anymore?

I feel like Walter in the Big Lebowski:

"Has the whole world gone crazy? Am I the only one around here who gives a sh*t about the rules? Mark it zero!"

Not looking for pity, just want to vent, lol. Anyone else gonna get boned by EB tomorrow? :D

/rant off.

*I used to work for EB games so I know for a fact this is company policy. I have also placed pre-orders with many other companies and always received notice.

Wow that's crappy. If a shop would treat me like that then my next stop is google maps and I'm going to find their shop entry (google places) that didn't honor their sale with me and they get a big negative review with full details urging customers to find a better shop and even point to one.

Seriously, this is the internet age, if they treat customers like that it will bite them in the behind. I've had one bad experience with a shop a few years ago and my "review" is still on the first page when you google them :)

I just got a text message from Gamestop saying that my pre-order would be ready at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Now that I've heard twice I can relax and trust them.

It's not just Gamestop that has to worry, apparently somewhere along the chain between Best Buy corporate and our region, it seems like we're not getting any CEs for tomorrow. x.X I'm just glad that I had called earlier today to find that out so I could have it shipped instead. (Hopefully it's not as bad as it sounded, but nobody really knew when the trucks would come though it was definitely not going to be in time for pickups tomorrow. >.<)

Because, contrary to belief, we aren't the center of the Earth. It will be Tomorrow, by Japan's time, and they will have their games already. Blame it on the World Time Zone system.

6pm PDT today = 10am in Tokyo, tomorrow.

My order from months ago is in shipping still. I guess it will come tomorrow. Since servers will be up tonight i would buy another copy just to get it going :) I called my local Gamestop and asked if they had some in stock. He said yes they have some but the game doesn't release untill tomorrow. So he couldn't not sell it to me, but i could pre-order it. bleh!

I feel for you :( I had the same thing happen to me when the Wii was released except they were more organised and promised each unit in order of date the pre-order was made. (eg i was 51st on the list) It only took 4 extra days to get it but I guess that wasnt a collector's edition with pre-release benefits :(

That's a real shame, especially since a week from now one of the features of the CE will be null and void. Reminds me of that seinfield episode:

Jerry: I made a reservation for a mid-size, and she's [Elaine's] a small. I'm kidding around, of course.

Agent: I'm sorry, we have no mid-size available at the moment.

Jerry: I don't understand, I made a reservation, do you have my reservation?

Agent: Yes, we do, unfortunately we ran out of cars.

Jerry: But the reservation keeps the car here. That's why you have the reservation.

Agent: I know why we have reservations.

Jerry: I don't think you do. If you did, I'd have a car. See, you know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation and that's really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anybody
can just take them.

And Japan is the center of the world? There's no reason they couldn't have released the game earlier so that everyone would get to start at the same time.

Which EB did you check with?

I pre-ordered from the one in Lower Sackville and was gonna give them a call in a bit to check.

Never said that either. But since they made the game, and made the rules, I guess it's why things are the way they are. I fall into the "have to wait til GS opens their doors tomorrow" group, so not much point in fussing about it on my end.

(But getting used to JP time vs your time, would be wise. You'd be surprised how many things are based on "Their time" vs "Your time". The term, "JP Midnight" got used quite often in FFXI)

The EBgames/Gamestop walk in stores are notorious for this kind of "overselling of pre orders". What I find it means alot of the time is that some of their employees forgot to order their own hot release copy of a game and all of a sudden they over sold their pre orders, but mysteriously all the employees of the store got their said preorder.

Gamestop/EB stores are in the business of being shady and practicing taking advantage of people. I never ever go into their stores, I use solely EBgames website for pre ordering. Gamestop is the devil and their employees are the bottom feeding scum dredgers of the gaming community. That is all.

Pretty much the exact same thing happened to me and when I posted about it a gamestop employee felt the need to call me a liar and point out why this would never happen. It's heartbreaking I know. Good luck to you in getting it before your early start is void.

Just a heads up guys, if the GS/EB clerks says they didn't get it in yet tell them to go in the back and physically check their boxes. I had a wait an extra day because the clerk didn't bother with those minor details of actually seeing if it was in stock.

Yeah. They wouldn't check for me at EB until I told them another store would sell it to me tonight and if they didn't let me know right away if they had it I would be cancelling my pre-order. I may still do so.

I got confirmation yesterday when I went to pay off my pre order. It helped that the clerk that helped me was an ex FFXI guy.
