The first 2 I'm flip-floppin' between both come from an awesome movie, the 5th element...Leeloo Dallas & Blander Kolas(anagram of Korben Dallas)...because I'm not that creative when it comes to names. Another male name I was considering was Cid Barrett(2 characters from FF7 and the name of a Pink Floyd legend)

For the chick character, if I can come up with a better last name I'll go for it... Leeloo's definitely staying though...

Not to mention that stopped funny about a year ago since every cool internet kid had some toon/character named that in just about every MMO that had some kind of undead race or equivalent.

I'm thinking Zapp Brannigan just because Futurama is the end all, be all of TV shows =P

My real name translated into Al Bhed. It's rare for someones name to not sound completely ridiculous when translated, works for mine though. Well, I like it atleast.

The whole two name thing really messed up my plans.

But I did it.

Versteckt Douleur.

Its really emo, but it sounds cool, I guess. And it fits in with the whole FFXI/Ivalice-y vibe.

Whenever I have a hard time with names, and I want it to be somewhat cool, I try different languages.

Vincent was a name I've used on and off in my own fictional ideas (Vincent is often the counterpart to Xavier, another character name).

Dredax is an amalgamation of Dresden (from Jim Butcher's novels) and Shadax (NES's Solstice).

My beta name was Coolhand Lou cuz I thought I wanted to go with Pugilist and figured it was the perfect fit while keeping the cool in my name. I didn't want to go with Louiscool again after FFXI. It garners a lot of hate, as people don't realize im being ironic. Of course I'm not cool, I'm playing an mmo...

My first character on FFXI was Tuckerr, my last name is Tucker. My final and main character in FFXI was Rombus. My SN on these forums and other online sites is IamTuck. So I decided to just go with Rombus Tuck.

From hours, and hours (... days?) of browsing names. XD
I wanted something kinda short for convenience, something original, something I could actually pronounce, and wasn't Japanese (Which is what most of my usual names are). ^^;

Neasa has a few meanings/origins, most of which I found interesting, so... And Vera being Latin for Truth. I thought they sounded good together.

I will admit that the addition of the last name threw me a curve ball and forced me to stray away from Raion, but in the end I like my new name a lot more.

My inspiration came from two historical figures that I respect. The first name from one and the last name from the other.

I was originally going to go Roman with my name but decided that would be kind of trite. So, then I got the two historical figures idea. I put the two names together and discovered they were pretty bad *** together.

Moses Adolphus is the name.

My nickname in XI was Ali (short for Alina) and even after I deleted my character and came back with a different name it still stuck. Maybe try incorporating your nickname?

And I swear the last name has nothing to do with ZAM! I was trying to come up with an Arabic inspired name to fit a Dunesfolk Lalafel that was more original than 'Ali Baba' which was the first one I thought of.

EDIT: Oh yeah and because of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utKeswlpMhc

Why not use Ryder as the surname and just come up with a cool first name. In my experience it is easier to name a character with a first name than to come up with a surname for them. Many names could go well with Ryder as the surname such as this list I came up with while typing this post.

1)Symon
2)Alexius
3)Jelrond
4)Galrand

Just to name a couple to help get your creative juices flowing. I personally will be using a character name from an old story I wrote many many many (god I feel old) years ago, Spencer Darkshayde. I know alot of people like the name Darkshade but I always felt it had more mystique and was more unique spelled with the "y" in it. On FFXI I was more well known than all the other Darkshade clones that were out there. Hope I helped and good luck on your naming day!

I originally got the Name Cytherea Cybele about 10 years ago for Asheron's call. I got the first and last name from a book of mythological names. I can't remember off the top of my head but they were either the names of Greek or Roman mythological persons. I combined the two names for this one.

I picked a monosyllabic first name that ideally pronounces itself pretty much the same no matter the language of the speaker, and then added a last name which hints at my french origins and probably pronounces very differently based on the speaker's knowledge and origins.

Monosyllabic first name means people will simply call me by my first name, not the 3 first letters of my name :P

A beautiful name but be careful using a name like Cytherea in an MMO where most of the people that play have some sort of addiction to internet ****. If you laughed when reading this post you are one of the people I speak of. :)

name came from a forgotten realms series...a kinda minor character but she also (imo played a role in the main character's development) In elven it meant revenge.

I'm not taking it with me to FFXIV though as i'm not going to roll an elf looking character this time around (I've always used it for elves ^^) that and there isn't a last name associated with her =3

I did have the person in question come to mind when I read your name :p
I heard my characters first name in another game a few years ago, and for whatever reason fell in love with it, and so use it for any female character i create ever since. The surname I just happened to be watching Gundam 00 when I was making the character, thought it sounded cool so I went with it.

Gadhelyn Appledore.

Gadhelyn was my character's name in XI. It is also the name of the god of feasting and mischief from D&D Greyhawk. Appledore is one of the surnames mentioned as being very usual in the village of Bree amongst Men in Fellowship of the Ring. My wife and I wanted a surname we both could agree on and went with that one.

My initial inspiration was based off them having an Alchemist class. Not being used to making a first and last name (at least not in a long time, D&D was a while ago now) I did a google on Alchemy and Recipes. Ended up with two names based from ingredients, and at the last moment changed my last name as it just flowed better. Still have a complete 2nd name should I ever need.want/get to the point of, needing a 2nd name.

My main character in beta was Gray Malkin which derives from Grimmalkin a term for a grey cat used in Shakespeare and other old literature. Not sure if I am going to use it for retail though. I made a Hyur called Starlight Muse to test out what a huyr female looked like and found myself really liking the name, if not the character. But then again I did make an Elezen caled Radiant Glory ....

My first name is the same name I used in Final Fantasy 11, which coincidentally came from a friends name in elementary school 14 or 15 years ago. When I realized I needed a last name for Final Fantasy 14 I was totally stumped, so I kept thinking and thinking, and about a month ago (I think) when they were having the special net cafe raffles for beta keys here in Japan, I took a shot at it, and while fumbling around with my not quite so good Japanese, the store clerk was very patient and kind as he put up with my lack of speaking skill. I happened to glance at his name tag, and there I found my last name. :P

Back in the day... when I was playing D&D 3rd edition, I created a paladin which was supposed to be my main character for a long time, the guy ended being a complete failure and eventually changed to a fighter but I expended so long creating the name that now I use it for everything.

The original was Kail Kenage, but I only used the surname for FFXI, Kail was only a generic-medieval-sound-name starting with K (to decorate all my gear K.K.) but Kenage (please don't laugh) it's Japanese, originally looking for "corage" I ended finding "naive", I liked the kanji(健気) and the pronunciation so that became my character name for all the games/accounts/characters to come.

Ken

Kaelia was just an extreme bastardization of my name (Caitlin). Cai -> Kae, cut out the "t" because I prefer softer sounds, left "li" in, and exchanged the "n" for an "a" for an extra feminine feel to it. Ayatari was chosen because my boyfriend and I have two cats named Kari (Kah-ree) and Mari (Mah-ree), so I wanted to keep the same theme (since we're both Miqo'te). I went with "tari" and just tagged "Aya" on front because I thought it sounded nice and I like having more syllables in the last name than the first name usually.

I usually use my environment or something that is related to my character. My main tag is usually some form of Autumnfire. That I just got because I love how trees look like they're on fire in the autumn. Also, kanji for Autumn is essentially Tree Fire. So it all kind of stuck for me and I've been using it for the past 15 years. But I don't always use it. Sometimes other names can be more appropriate if I have a character concept in mind. I once had a scythe wielding character who was pale and had white hair and had ghost like abilities, so her name was Geist. And once (man, this is soooo geeky, I can't believe I'm making this public) my sister translated my name into tolkien's version of elvish and I used that for a while.

But long story short, my inspiration comes from other languages, character concepts, and environment.

I'll be playing Lalafell and will most likely take one of the names my two Lalafell in the OB had. One was based on my FFXI Taru, Chihiro, who was named after Chihiro from Spirited Away. The second was the name of a Moogle I made up while imagining a fanfiction set in the FFTA2 universe (yes, yes /geek), he was called Iree. I actually made Iree first, then looked up a Hawaiian surname list (authenticity probably dubious) and chose "Ainanani" for his family name. Chihiro was created second and she took the same family name mainly for convenience.

Frequently I'll use fandom as inspiration for names (to wit, my WoW toons named after Green Lantern characters), but in the case of FFXIV, I want something that also looks more than slightly like it fits in with the world.

I use an English to Latin translator and just bounce words through it until I come up with something I like. Eske told me my beta character's name reminded him of a Harry Potter villain.
