but I doubt new world servers are already ready

Didnt the beta have additional worlds? And i know they added one for a few days just to test out the bounus items.

If they did they can just switch those on however i cant say for sure we dont already have those since i never paid attention to the number of worlds you could pick back then.

I expect that they are capping off servers for balance in a similar way that the Surplus system is supposed to keep hardcore and casual gamers in a tighter distribution. They set a soft limit on the number of players per server until the servers equalize, then open them all up again. If you have friends on a server that is closed, try waiting 4 or 5 hours (I know, people who are playing right now have the CE and spent twenty-five dollars to play now, but facts being what they are...). If my theory is correct, another option would be to create a character on another server with low population, then delete it or see if you can transfer it once the other servers open again.

Well characters, we have no way of knowing how many people have alts.
Very few I'd imagine, based on the higher cost and retainer system helping to remove the need for mules.

Wow, wasn't expecting this many replies when I made the thread. I wont update the first post because they just keep changing too fast, but if you guys keep track to pass the time that would be cool to see!

Concerning server selection lock: Once the lower population servers even out, they will open up the other servers again. It's just to keep them roughly even and a lot of people don't really care what server they initially play on. I wonder, though, if we will get a free pass for the server we played on in Open Beta? Seems we should if we are to keep our character names, but then again...

Actually, I just realized something. Given that the Lodestone has a server search function, it follows that there must be an API, almost certainly a REST API that gives direct access to the server information. This means that some industrious person could with relative ease run as search and then parse the network (actually it might not even be that hard, depending on if it is using a REST API or not) then write a quick program that could watch the server numbers in real time. I don't have time to do it myself, but it would certainly be interesting to see, and probably not too hard. The 1000 character restriction is almost certainly to reduce stress on bandwidth, and there is probably a way around it.

I don't understand most of what you just said, but I like the way it sounds. Someone who understands this mans language should get on this pronto!

Looks like the server caps are temporary, probably just trying to filter out people who are just choosing servers for the sake of choosing and move them to the less filled ones. Good thing too since my whole shell is heading to Figaro :/ hope it doesn't get unreasonably full before the main launch or they at least let us do a buddy system to by-pass any locks so we can get friends on the servers we want. I knew this was going to be a potential problem but I wasn't expecting it to be THAT much of a problem on Collectors release day.

MMORPG's don't die.

It's more like in those science fiction shows where they take some ones head and put it in a jar and hook it up to a bunch of tubes and what not.

Actually take a look at APB, AC2, and Auto Assault. All of those games closed their doors, APB in record time too lol.

Edit: Oh and Tabula Rasa too

Don't forget about Shadowbane and Matrix Online...

And a few other more obscure ones.

Sims Online too, can't think of anything else though.

Earth and Beyond. :(

Ah, someone else actually remembers that game? At least there's a working emulator now :]

If no one else does, I'll see if I have any time in class today to do a population tally.

I think they'll have around 700-800k people for the first 3-5 months then it will come down to around 300k or so.

Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I thought of it first:
