Does anyone know the circumstances you'd recieve this?

Is it just given name that gets taken - or the full Given and surname?

My full name is completely unique - and I've NEVER seen someone with my Given name. Do you recieve the error only when your full name is taken - or maybe something I'm using it not acceptable?

This is upsetting.

Skavian Alkahest.. I use Skavian for everything and Alkahest is a solvent thought to be able to dissolve anything - highly tied to Alchemy.

I've only seen that error for 2 reasons:
- you're trying to use a name of an NPC (even from previous games, though I'm not sure how extensive this is)
- the full name you entered is already taken on that server (and yeah, it really does happen already, weird...)

Good luck though; seems kinda wrong that it's day-one and names are already taken...

Maybe.. not sure about the NPC thing but Skavian Alkahest is pretty obscure.

Did you use that name during Beta and on that server? Perhaps your beta is not linked so it's reserving it for you?

Nope, I intentionally used a different name on Beta to avoid someone taking a liking to it and using it. I was Ged Sparrowhawk on the Beta - and opted not to use my FFXI or FFXIV Beta name.

I think I figured it out.

There was a game published by Squaresoft called Alcahest. It wont let me use that either - but google searching showed me that. Oi.

double Edit:

Nope. I changed the first name to something completely different and it allowed me to make the character. I can't believe someone has my frickin name. Also - that would confirm 2 people cannot have the same Given name. Grr.

Okay - bumping with a new post.

I am REALLY confused.

It wont allow Skavian Alkahest or Skavian Alcahest - but will allow things like Skavian LOLWTF or Skavian Blahblahblah.

It will allow Blahblah Alkahest or Blahblah Alcahest...

So I'm supposed to believe someone has BOTH Skavian Alkahest AND Skavian Alcahest on the SAME server? Are you serious? No - something else is going on.

edit:

Also - according to Lodestone nobody even HAS the name Skavian or Alkahest... WTF :(

How so? that would just confirm two people cannot have the same first and last name...I made two characters in beta on the same server and called them both "Rex" with different surnames and also on the same server I had a character surnamed "Alistair" and one of my "Rex" was also called "Alistair" so no limitations there other than you can't match a full name...i don't know what happened with your name, someone probably has it is all.

EDIT: just read your last post - that's really weird, maybe its Alcahest and any variation of it that's forbid by SE?

Yeah, I'm not sure either.

According to Lodestone - nobody has Skavian or Alkahest on any server. But I can use either name in conjuction with other words without issue.

Time to brainstorm on something new I guess.

edit:

Well - I thought that too. But if I use a different Given Name - it let's me use Alkahest OR Alcahest without issue.

The profanity filter seems to be really strict, because from the last two letters of your first name and the first two letters of your last name, it spells "****".

That's pretty silly, considering I don't think anyone would have noticed if it wasn't pointed out.

did you link your beta account to your ffxiv account when you registered? It should have asked you if you would like to create a new ffxiv account or use your beta account. If you said new account, then you will not be able to use your name on that server, as it is reserving it for your beta account that is no longer applied to you.

Wow incredibly good catch.

I bet that's it. I didn't even notice.

Bah.

edit:

Dude I have to say again (or dudette) that was an uncanny catch. I'm impressed. I changed it to Skavian Aelkahest and it went through. I don't mind changing the lettering, the idea remains.

I am 100% sure people can have the same surname - a close friend from XI and I used the same surname in beta, and we're using it in retail as well. (People often refer to us as twins since we finish each others sentences and say the same exact things at the same time extremely often, so we just figured the same surname would be a given in XIV)

edit: oh wow @ profanity filter/****, I wouldn't have caught that at all. Good eye!

Yeah, they can get kinda crazy on filtering! In one MMO I was playing, you couldn't say the word "cave" and someone claimed it was because that was a bad word in French. I don't know if they were joking or what, but for freaks sake - a dang cave is a hole in a rock! And that was where most of their dungeons were - in caves!

Hope nothing about my name strikes any bad chords! Lol! Guess I can't use anything like "Edie Ott" or "Stu Pididiot", huh? Hee hee!

Yep I noticed this when I tried to make a name ready for launch.
Narrowed it down to it no allowing 'Lez' even though it is part of one of their own races "Elezen"

I would say that means someone used it in beta, so its reserved, but did not go ahead and use it in release (yet).

Still, thats got to be a 1 in a billion chance, really bad luck there.

Yeah, Sirnames won't be a problem. Remember, SE wants current FFXI players to have their server names as their sirnames, lol.

yeah, i found out Moses wasn't allowed (full name Moses Adolphus)... wanted it as my Given but said the name was already taken so then I tried it in surname just to see what would happen and it still says taken. I don't believe both the surname and given have to be unique so guess SE doesn't want a Moses running around their game.
