I haven't been using any yet, but here is a rule of thumb for people looking to eat food.
Each food item will have a catagory, meat dish, seafood dish, sweets, grain dish, etc...
Meat dish - extra attack power and HP
Grain dish - HP and defense
Seafood dish - accuracy and evasion
Sweets - magic potency and MP
Vegetable dish - magic accuracy and MP
Drinks - elemental resistance and magic crafting
