I never had a problem in finding lightening shards in the betas, but I'm having problems finding them now. What type of mobs drop them?

its sad you need to hunt lv 15ish mobs to get it, for lv 1 crafts.
fireflies are to uncommon to farm.
wind shards are even worse

Some variety of sheep/rams will drop them as well, though in lesser quantities (they're ideal for wind shards/crystals)

I've seen those mobs drop the lightening shard as a secondary drop, but do any of those mobs drop them as a primary? So they drop 6xLightening Shards and/or 1xLightening Crystal.

I'm currently a rank 8 Miner(and that took all of about an hour). I've gotten hundreds of lightning shards from mining. Maybe that might be the route to try for you:)

Which region or are you finding that with all three city states?

Bumble beetles has a okay drop rate, you could also up your lightning res and fish for a while. I have a high wind res and am getting nothing but wind shards doing so.

Haven't seen them be a primary on a low level mob easily found in good quantities...

You might want to try boosting your lightning elemental stat and then partake in some gathering. I hear a high primary stat in any particular element ups the chance that you find the corresponding elemental shard while gathering up other resources. Take what I say with a grain of salt though, I have not yet confirmed if it's true or not.

Edit: Well, Laudatio's post should be confirmation enough...

That seems to work...I remember in beta I jacked up my fire & thunder stats a ton both to test conjurer nukes and the gathering shards...it definitely helped. I've been keeping my element attributes balanced in retail, but when i have a couple extra points I throw them into wind & lightning in hopes of getting more with gathering.

What i'm not sure of is if you have to that are high, does it split between them? I plan to try that soon. Need some lightning to back up my wind shards now.

When I get back into the game, I'll assign my elemental points away from Wind and put them towards Lightening.

I wonder if it has any impact to the drop rate of shards off of mobs. If so, that might be a good way to improve a relatively low drop rate of Fire crystals off certain mobs. That's something that I plan on checking out, since I can never seem to get enough of them for blacksmithing.

I'm just outside Limsa Lominsa, in the grade 1 mineral spots. I haven't taken miner up past 8 yet, but I have hundreds of lightning shards.

I've also been fairly even distributing elemental stats, but I've been favoring Ice, Fire, and Lightning. I do have a lot of wind, fire, and lightning shards, but not as many others.

My little test from beta with these elemental stats.. Fire55, Water15, Lightning59, Wind16, Earth13, Ice14

Did 50 successful fishing attempts:
No Shards-16(32%)
Fire-12(24%)
Lightning-22(44%)

So the ones with shards it was about 2/3 for the higher element

Before that my Fire was up to the 60s lol...and I'd only get fire shards, as soon as lightning matched fire it started to shift...

Ah excellent, I know I need a ton of wind, so wasn't too worried, but eventually would be nice to concentrate on 2 or 3. Looks as if I should be able to then.

The Effect of Player Status on Crafting & Gathering
A player’s physical and elemental statuses greatly affect crafting and gathering. There are many hints within the game that reveal which statuses affect which aspects.

[ Crafting ]
Attributes: Works in conjunction with the type of tool used to affect synthesis quality
Elemental: Affects the occurrence rate of “god sends,” as well as synthesis stability

[ Gathering ]
Physical: Affects the number of items harvested, as well as the drop rate
Elemental: Affects the type of crystals that can be obtained during gathering

From the prelive event wrap up. http://jp.finalfantasyxiv.com/event/prelive/report_en.html

I knew I would be doing some clothcrafting come release so I've been shoving my points into wind, earth and lightning elements and seem to be doing okay with those shards so far just from Botanist gathering.

EDIT: Oh, and for the interested, "Godsends" refer to the crafting abilities that you get Rank 10 and up such as Fulfillment & Masterpiece from Clothcrafting and Leatherworking...found that out through the auto-translate dictionary.

It's not a huge sample set; but it seems to suggest that certain gathering skills are more inclined to give certain types of shards. I say that because of the somewhat large difference between the number of fire/lightning shards obtained versus your fire/lightning elemental stats. It also seems kind of odd that you didn't get any water shards either... I would think that you would get a token amount during a fishing session... I remember getting some from fishing during OB.

Maybe each gathering profession has a certain elemental bonus (i.e. Fishing is Water, Lightning. Botany is Earth, Wind. Mining is Fire, Ice.) and when added to elemental stats it dictates a primary/secondary shard type you get while gathering? I noticed you never got a third type of shard either.

Indeed I intended on testing it further and in each region to see if location mattered, but never got around to it. I think the type of gathering and location could affect it further. With those same element attributes I started a test in LL that went unfinished...though I do remember some water shards there. But then you would think I might've gotten some earth shards in the previous test that was fishing near Ul'dah. So I dunno... I may just be adding unnecessary speculation with that. = P

Wind shards are infact the most common shard you receive in La Noscea.
