Awful!!!

I preorderd the Collectors Edition and got to my door at like 11AM on the 22nd(about the only thing that went right). The patcher kept sh*tting the bed on me, so I ended up trying a few torrents. I tried ONE torrent, which didn't work, but somehow gave my computer a virus.

So I tried the direct downloads. They actually worked, but the virus kept shutting my **** computer down in mid download, making me start the download over. It took me 2 hours to remove the virus and fix the registry it decided to change. After fixing the registry I could finally change my desktop picture back to my 3 year old son, and remove the *** one it had put up. Literally ***, it was two 70+yr old guys performing ******** on each other.

Ok, FINALLY patched! Now all I have to do is setup an account and start playing. But their subscription system was so confusing it took me another hour to do that. I tried to buy crysta with Click and Buy, but after filling out all of my information it told me my debit card was invalid. Ok, so I setup a paypal account and finally buy some crysta so I can start my subscription. And I end up buying like 4 extra character slots on accident? Ya, I don't know.

I finally got to play for about an hour before I had to go to bed for work in the morning. But right when I walk out the door I get a phone call saying there is fraudulent activity on my ATM account. WTF. So I call my bank and it turns out my info I submitted to Click and Buy got jacked and they tried to drain my account into an account and Great Britain. So I cancel my debt card and I have to wait a week to be issued a new one.

ITS NOT OVER!!! I leave work early (an hour ago) and decide to grab some subway and head home and play some FFXIV. I order my sub and since my debit card has been can canceled I decided to pay by check. They don't accept checks. I check my wallet for cash...FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!

Alright whatever I say, I'll buy a frozen pizza(which i just burnt because I was too into typing this story). Finally get home to play some ffxi and ITS OFFLINE.

Just to recap for all that didn't read
-Patching problems
-Virsues
-Account/Billing problems
-Fraudulent Credit Card Charges from ClicktoBuy.com

Worst experience ever in any video game.

EDIT!!: I am not blaming the game or SE for any of this. I am just sharing my story of the launch day/day after.

And how does your personal @#%^up have anything to do with SE's game?

Do I feel bad for you? Sure, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Is it SE's fault? Quit pushing responsibility onto others. You downloaded the virus, its your fault.

oh...btw....FFXI is working fine. You might want to make sure your FFXI account wasn't jacked too. ^^

edit: Ok so maybe I read too much into it. It's not SE's worst game launch. It's his worst game launch. Take all that I said lightly.

This comment made my morning.

Seriously man - with the virus - it's not SE's fault you're a doofus. The torrent files are put on your computer by SE - how did you manage to find a virus? Do you know how to use the internet?

Please tell me you emailed SE with the exact same story lol. Are people still having problems with the official updater? Aside from the two times during OB where the updater would get stuck in the 90% range, after forwarding ports on my router its been smooth sailing with officially updating.

Viruses are your own **** fault for not using the torrent on your hard drive thats downloaded when you open the patcher all you do is close it and open the torrent in utorrent no viruses or anything.

I havent had any faudulent charges from click and buy you sure you didnt endup on a paage that looked like square enix management.

Patcher problems everyone has had, most just have the inteligence to search a forum and find a few hundred posts telling you how to fix it.

About billing issues i never have had any and about cheques most of the world is phasing them out now, its not suprising they dont accept them.

[EDIT: My apologies, Ertide; from your title, it made it out like you were setting up to blame SE, and I only read your first post before writing mine.]

It bothers me that rare events like this are going to hurt the overall opinion of this game and fuel the haters.

The patcher? Yeah, could be better, but for worse examples, look at anything Cryptic has released in the last two years (STO, I'm looking at the box of failure which is you). Setting up account/subscription options? Granted, SE likes to do their own thing with everything, but this wasn't really that bad. Maybe it was a little time consuming, but considering that I finished before I was done patching, it's not like I was going to be in the game immediately anyway.

I think this is a case of just one person having all the bad luck, and considering that, I have two things to say:

-First, while it may add to a crappy day, blaming stuff that is no fault of the game company on the game company (in this case, on the launch), is about as fair as the average gamer being mummified in duct tape and having to fight a UFC champion (TLDR? - this isn't a warm audience for whining; got real points? use 'em, and they'll listen).

-Second, I feel for you; I really do. I'm one of those who usually wins the "bad luck of the day/week/year" lottery, so when it ALL goes bad, I understand.

If you plan on staying with the game, which I hope you do, good luck - sincerely. Even if it proves to be just an average game, this community still rocks.

Ouch, that's a pretty bad day I hope things improve.

It's possible that the virus is what nabbed your card info rather than anything wrong with Click and Buy. I haven't seen any fraudulent charges in my account so far, but I'm keeping an eye on it just in case.

My launch failed too. My laptop couldn't handle FF14 so I'm running out to get new laptop with some borrowed money. I swear I was up all night trying to get it to work between the patch issue and the lag/crashing.

I had a worse time with the WoW launch. There were server resets at least once an hour and every time you tried to log in there was a queue to get in that was anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half. An hour and a half to log in.

Compared to WoW the FFXIV launch was stellar.

Ok heres the logical thinking that says he is blaming SE:

SE have a patcher with issues which made him download the torrent which turns out to be fake and he gets a virus, which would be SE's fault seeing as he didnt acknowlage it was his mistake.

Somone tries to wipe out his bank account which he says is the one he gave click and buy his details idk if they said it was click and buy that tried to wipe him out or assumed it was them, SE's fault.

Because of the above problem he cant afford the sub he ordered as his card was canceled because of the company SE use for billing therefore SE's fault

He never says its SE's fault but a little logical thinking you can tell that hes insinuating that he beleaves the things that happened that day were SE's fault.

Sorry to hear that... thanks for the post though... I am cancelling my click and buy account.

I also had a shaky 22nd... GameStop was quick... but it was also WED so I had to get comics... that took some time... but it was ok, then my Grandpa needed me to help him hook up a new dvd player... and he did not have any RCA cables...
So I was running a lil behind, but it's my Gpa :P No problem.
I get home and install, takes a bit, not to long... after install is done, I notice my interest is down... I call Comcast and for a couple hours they have NO idea why my internet is not working and it might take up to 72 hrs to fix...

Then after it is back on... have to deal with the BIG patch and barely play any before the NEW mantience...

You still had a much worse day but I hope you come back to FFXIV and not let it stop from you enjoying it overall :)

My experience was quite different. Ordered the CE from Amazon Monday. Recieved it Wednesday at noon. Came home during lunch and did updating. Cam from work at 5 and everything was done. Submitted click and buy info and selected 180 day option (The payment was confusing with the different options including crysta). Logged in and played for several hours with no lag problems or disconnects. I'm happy

Its just easy to link it all together to look like your blaming SE, if you had said that it was your fault downloading the virus and said virus that could have got your card info etc which is highly likely then it wouldnt look as much like your blaming SE.

the only person's fault that you get a virus is your own any decent antivirus will block maicious downloads if the virus is in its database. but that shouldnt have been an issue if you had used the torrent downloaded when the official patcher downloaded before it started downloading the patch from said torrent

Actually, for me it was the BEST one ever. Only 30 minutes to fully update, zero lag, no need for torrents, and just going to use Crysta directly from SE. Keep in mind you didn't even have to register your CC if you chose Crysta.
This was hands-down, the single best launch day of any MMORPG ever made.

Edit, almost forgot, I had otis spunkmeyer chocolate chip+ chocolate muffins while waiting on gamestop to open and driving home. They were AWESOME.

@Myz And even better muffins.

I have to agree with Ury.. i havent had one problem, i set up everything on the Square account managment that i could day before game came in, didnt have a single problem with Click and Buy

Went down to gamestop right when they opened, got my game, came back, installed it, while it was installing, entered all my codes for game, asuran armguards, and onion helm, set up my monthly acct, made sure it was gonna debit next month, registered my little number key thingy, after it installed, i got the megaupload of the patch, installed those, signed in, made my character and poof... easy peasy...

the only problem i had(have) is that the product registration for the game didnt work cause they temporarily took them down, but thats just for more of those 'points' on the square site , i even got my rite on its way (may take 6 weeks, but it'll get here lol)

I doubt you got the virus from the torrent patch unless you did something completely wrong.

did you google 'ffxiv patch' and download whatever you saw and open the new exe you torrented? Don't do that.

Start the program, when it goes to update, it'll put a torrent file in your [username]/My Games/FFXIV/downloads/... (not exact path but you should be able to find the right place). Open THAT torrent file with your program. Since it's a torrent file from SE, and torrent programs check to make sure the file you get is the right file, you really can't get a virus from it.

edit: nevermind, I don't believe a word of what you're saying.

This is inexcusable. I'm going to write Square Enix and give them **** about their fast food check payment policies.

They were AWESOME.

spunkmeyer? lol, I wouldn't eat anything that has the word "*****" in its name.

Their muffins are indeed awesome. Especially the blueberry ones.

Must be a California place only. Don't have them here. That's where you went wrong. Mcdonalds > Port of Subs lol

Anyway, true or not, there are definitely lessons to be learned from the OP's post. Personally, I think he is probably pulling our collective legs... I've had a lot of friends get all manner of viruses, and then come to me to fix it for them, and I've never seen one that replaces your wallpaper with *** geezer ****. While that makes for a hilarious story, I don't buy that it actually happened. Besides, it sounds like he is talking about a keylogger, and those viruses usually try to be more subtle so as to successfully acquire sensitive info... They don't normally do things that will obviously announce their presence, although it's not unheard of.

But about that lesson to be learned... Viruses and credit card theft are very real and serious issues, and you should all know better than to get them by downloading obvious trap files. If you do get them, for fox sake, don't type sensitive info until they're gone.

And have some patients... I've been playing since the phase 1 or 2 beta, one of them... And I had to download plenty of files... The official downloader works fine if you just give it a few minutes to warm up. Sure, at first it will say something like ETA 20 hours, but if you ignore it and let it work, it speeds up and will likely finish within an hour or two. If it doesn't, maybe you have a NAT issue or something.

If you must go the other route and download from unofficial places, then have some common sense. There are a million ways you can detect, extract, avoid, and prevent viruses... Failing all that, should you actually get one, there are another million ways to remove them without suffering any real damage beyond some lost time. The absolute stupidest thing you could do, would be to get a virus, and then go entering sensitive info all willy nilly... It's too stupid to believe someone competent enough to find a forum would do something like that, which is another reason I don't buy the OP's story... Still, plenty of people do lose their accounts that way.

Really though, if you get a virus, don't use any of the virus remover tools... Sit your *** down, back up all your data, and reinstall your operating system. It's a pain in the ***, and it will teach you not to repeat your mistakes... It's also far more effective than any other method. Plus doing all the post install tweaks and adjustments will further increase your tech experience. I used to get viruses from napster when I was like 9, until I taught myself to know better that way. Now I rarely get them, and get to help my friends and family out all the time with their tech issues...(oh yay lol :P )

At any rate, I myself haven't been around for many online game launches, and this is the first MMO launch I've seen, as I came to FFXI post CoP. It seems to be going pretty well though, and I haven't had any issues.

It quite literally changed my desktop picture, and put shortcuts to **** sites on my desktop. And disabled my desktop appearance tab in the preferences. Along with disabling my task manager. Also installing a completely fake "antivirus" program, which would pop up fake security threats, at an attempt to steal my credit card info when purchasing this fake program to deal with the fake security threats.

And I was under the impression I had gotten rid of the virus after running multiple removal tools and scans when I entered my info on clickandbuy.

I'd still blame SE. If their patcher had worked, none of the subsequent events would have happened. The patch issue is annoying and people shouldn't have to search forums just to get into the game.

Funny thing is that the patcher does work...

It worked for me first time I tried it. Guess everything's a little subjective, eh?
