UPDATE: Square Enix has asked ZAM to take down this download. We are very sorry. Smiley: frown

If you're having difficulty downloading the patch today, ZAM has put up the patch for download for premium members here: http://ffxiv.zam.com/file.html

Epic cash grab and I find it hard to believe SE is down with you profiting from hosting their updates.

I know there's more to premium than just the downloads but if even 1 person signs up just to get the updates its a cash grab.

I look at it more as a gift to our current subscribers, but maybe that's just me. It's not like we're making premium members pay more to download it. Premium ZAM costs $3.33 a month. You probably pay that much for a gallon of gas.

Is it legal to make money off another company's intellectual property?

edit: Just want to say I don't have an issue with ZAM making money because they keep up a good site, but I just don't want to see it get into legal trouble.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound rude to the ZAM people, just more-so frustrated that the patcher and torrent routes never work for me, but direct download does, but Square Enix refuses to offer official direct downloads.

I'm not sure I agree with ZAM essentially charging a fee for something you can get legally for free elsewhere. I wouldn't sign up for a premium membership just for access to the patch mirrors. I know premium access is really cheap, but still. :/

It would be akin to using fileplanet. The premium fee would go towards offsetting the bandwidth costs.

I'm not premium member and i don't feel hurt by this.

Being premium member you get perks at no xtra charge . . . . so if that's a perk
and offered to members who help hte site financially how is someone paying to have
access to extra content offered by the web site.

At the end of the day if they are hosting something to ease downloads i don't think its a bad thing.

Plus for ZAM

This. I am thrilled with this option. Just a quick question from someone that is not a computer person. Is there a special place or anything I need to do other then click on the link? I'm at work at the moment so I don't want to click on it right yet. Thanks ahead of time for helping an old person... (29).

On another note, it's creepy how fast I just downloaded the patch using the FFXIV patcher thing. It was like 30 seconds or something. It's nice to know that you guys offer this option for those in dire need, however.

I'm a premium member because I want to support the site and keep them in business.

The bonuses I get as a result of that are not things I am paying for, they are things I am getting for free as a result of paying.

Just like how I didn't pay $10 for a Mog Satchel; I paid $10 for a Security token and got a free Mog Satchel.

Or how you go to a store, "Buy one, get one free". You get the one free because you bought one.

So think of it as donating to zam out of the kindness of your heart, and they'll give you some free **** to say thanks.

If they reversed their stance on ignoring widescreen monitor users (at least giving an option to not prevent the forum from scaling after a certain point), I'd be willing to go for premium. Until then, voting against allakhazam with my money.

Sigh. I'm really sorry everyone, but Square Enix just emailed us asking to take this down.

Apparently we're to play along with their quest to cram P2P patching down everyone's throats.

Does SE not like money or something? I mean honestly, I am sitting at a 10 hour download, because I can't get a download speed above 10KB with the P2P system they have. If anything makes me, and I am sure other people also, not want to play, it would be this. And as I type this, it stops completly.

There is no way to know of course, but I wonder if the reason is to slow everyone down for some reason. Seems as if a lot of the things they require us to do is just time sinks. A lot of things could be changed to make the experience a lot faster. I don't know what the reason is, but I believe there is one.

Just my thoughts.

Oh...I have no doubt that is the reason they gave you, and it is most likely Copyright infringement, but I still think that behind all that there are the real reasons that we will never know.

Oh well...Think I shall go play awhile. :)

Not shocked, a company goes out of their way to do favors for SE and they get slammed for it. Wonder if it wasn't a premium feature if they'd still complain?

Yeah, they'd make them take it down either way. Obviously no harm was meant here (quite the opposite) but it is copyright infringement. The lawyers have to protect their intellectual properties at all times or it sets a bad precedent.

Edit: It's pretty sad, though, that in trying to use their crappy P2P patcher I was stuck at 62% after four and a half hours. After finding the torrent? Six minutes and I'm in. They know their program stinks, too, they're just being really stubborn. I'm not one to /ragequit or anything but that's not very good customer service on their part.

File distribution websites HAVE hosted patch files for games before though. It's not like they're required to defend themselves here, they wouldn't even have to pay alla to do it!

Zam is very good with dealign with square, and are on not bad terms either. wont say freindly but not bad. :) listening to squares requests grants good things to zam, like a beta key give away! square is picky with there stuff. And thats okay. im prety sure the email they sent to zam probably wasnt a bad one either, Probably a "Due to copyright blah blah, please remove blah blah. thanks"
