There are many ways to make money. But this is...well...a new low. You know that members are eager to download the patches to play the game. And you profit from that. Are you not FFXIV players yourself?
Have you ever been to fileplanet.com?

Uh, and telling people to buy a membership to FilePlanet to get a beta key that they didn't even have yet isn't just a way to make money?

Do you think offering up downloads to people is free? Obviously SE themselves doesn't want to pay for the bandwidth to offer a direct download, yet we're supposed to just eat it?

This is a business move by ZAM. Don't make it sound like you are trying to help the FFXIV community. Yes SE doesn't want to offer direct download...and guess what..ZAM sees it as a chance for them to make money out of it. And yeah, for something that they do not even legally own.

Tell me you don't believe that members will pay for premium simply to download the patch. Tell me this wasn't the main motivation behind the move.

Come on.... sub-default my response to **** so that no one else will read it. Why am I not surprised?

I'm not comparing us to a file downloading site. I'm comparing us to their whole incident of offering beta keys if you were a paying member, then it turned out that they didn't have the keys in hand and a bunch of people had already paid for memberships.

Good move by Square Enix. Totally agree with their decision.

People shouldn't have to pay ZAM to download something they do not own. If ZAM really want to help the members here be it Premium or Ordinary members, there are tons of free filesharing sites they can use without incurring cost (that is if there wasn't any copyright infringement in the first place).

This is not so much a "Thank you for being Premium member, to show our gratitude we have hosted the patch file for you to download"

This is more of a money making "Are you a Premium member? If no, why no? Do you know that as a premium member, you get to download FFXIV update patches that ordinary memberships do not have access to".

No one has to pay for anything, they are offering a service and you can choose whether or not you want it.
Why does it matter if they are trying to get more business, isn't that what companies are supposed to do?
They are a fan site and their entire existence is dependent on making money money off of the work of gaming companies.

Why be mad at the site for offering the service to alleviate the problem, wouldn't it make more sense to be irritated at the source of the problem?

So Square Enix gives beta keys to FilePlanet, who then screws people over while make money, but we're the evil ones for offering up a file download that is preventing people from playing and putting it behind a feature that helps make that download possible. Ok I get it.

I agree that you should not have to pay extra to get an update from a separate website no matter how paltry the membership fee is.
But.
This is was a safe alternative to the congested P2P updater that( my dad 5 hrs later is at 30%) is really slow. At least someone(which should have been SE) is trying to provide a solution to the problem in a timely manner.
And before someone says SE is working on it, lets just point out that a website that is not employed by SE came up with a working solution however wrong or right faster than the employees of the company.

So giving an extra service to people who is supporting you with their money it's now a bad thing?

And are you seriously defending fileplanet??? the site has simple no standards they will host whatever users upload, including copy right infringement, legally forbidden material, password protected zipped/rared files which by the way their mediocre virus check can't scan, etc.

Pikko can't you host the torrent file from the game? with a manual of how to use it, maybe it's an alternative way to support premium members, I don't think SE would have a problem that.

To be very blunt you are. If youve been on the forums for a while you should see the comunity as they are. Whenever anybody asks for advice or help, the members and admins always try to help. and when people are just being jerks (not sayign you are) the members fight back more then the admins, Most people jus tleave it be and let them rant. personal attacks are not tolerated from what ive seen. And insulting Zam period is insulting the entire comunity.

Just my point of view.

True, and my point wasn't to say that it was ok to offer the download for a price. My point was that at least there was an option to relieve congestion quickly.

And btw, do you still talk to susurus? Is he playing FFXIV?

We were actually discussing how to make this available to non-premium members when the request came in for removal and when that happened, the subject was dropped because we were specifically told we couldn't even offer it for free. You have to also understand that locking something like this behind premium is also to prevent our site from being affected by tons of people suddenly sucking the life out of our site without sticking around to help grow our community.

Yeah, I mean how dare they do something to show they appreciate the people who help support the site, how mean of them. *sigh* If only natural selection worked better in the human species, we could finally be rid of the stupid people like this.

Hello,

Thanks for posting the Patch Files! ( I managed to get them from SE's P2P nightmare after 12 hours, but rated your post up as I thought that was super cool of you!!)

I have two computers, I sometimes play on either one... I'm installing FFIX on both, I have patched one up, and would like to forgo the excruciating 12 hour patch DL I experience on the first one; by pulling the patch files off of the machine that it is currently working fine on, and putting it on the machine that FFXIV was newly installed on.

Can you tell me what directory the patch files go in? is it some temp directory? I can't seem to find the files in the main FFXIV install Dir.

if you'll answers this and it works... I'll add it to the wiki. :-)

I'm using Win 7.

Thanks.

The patch today is small, it's maybe an hour download without peers. You'll be fine.
