This sounds consistent with the crashes others have, but the one thing that seems to be common between them is they have laptops with ATI video cards. The main issue seems to be Catalyst version and driver version, but lots of howto guides I googled either don't work as intended or are very complicated...

If someone has a step by step fix that is easy to follow, im sure a lot of people would appreciate it.

I had the same issues that you are having. In addition, I had big issues even installing the game (Windows 7 compatability issues).

The easiest thing that worked for me was to install a new graphics card. I am not suggesting that this is the only solution!!! However, when I purchased my brand new HP pc yesterday (with Windows 7, 64bit) I also purchased an upgraded graphics card that I knew I would install anyway. It just so happened this problem was fixed while doing something I would have done anyway.

I have noticed in some of the other forum threads that the graphics cards/video drivers are sometimes the culprit. After reading those threads, you could follow their advice.

If you do go to buy one, it doesn't have to be top-of-the-line. Just something that will run this massively graphics-hungry program fairly well. Here is the information regarding the card I purchased and (easily) installed today.

ATI Radeon HD5570
1GB DDR3 Memory
Purchased from Best Buy for $120.

I hope this helps!

I hear you there, I'm having a similar issue myself.

I can log in, and I can move my char around. But, after just a few minutes I get the stopped working error and it crashes. I have my fingers crossed that someone can help me.

What I have done so far:
***Updated motherboard drivers
***flashed bios to most recent version
***updated, uninstalled, reinstalled (MANY TIMES) the vid card drivers
-----the last time I uninstalled catalyst, booted in safe mode, ran driver sweeper, rebooted, reinstalled catalyst 10.9, rebooted, still no luck)
***updated directx
***disabled aero
***ran as admin, ran without

I'm at a loss here, the only other option I see is a complete reformat on the machine but I shouldn't have to do that to a machine that is less than a month old.

I never see the temp get high enough with catalyst open to make me think I'm overheating. I think the highest I have seen is low 60s C.

I had the same problem with the open beta, and I uninstalled and reinstalled the software three times to no luck with fixing the issue.

The system is not even a month old, I shouldn't be having these issues. My hubby can play fine on his laptop, and this system scores higher in everything than his.

Here goes the dirty stuff

At the end of Alpha testing alot of us ATI user were having similar problems.
Below is some info I pulled off FFXIV test site back in July I think.
I'm running a HD5850 and it fixed my problem.
The info talks about Driver version 10-6,but the latest is 10-9 I think.
I'm using 10-8 right now.

Ok guys, those of you having the "Final Fantasy XIV Beta Version has stopped working" error and are running ATI cards that meet the systems recommendations. Please check your Alerts and post the error.

In Windows 7, go to Control Panel, System and Security. Under Administrative Tools, Click on View Event Logs.

In the Log Summary Pane (middle bottom) double click on Applications.

You'll have a list of events in the top pane. Click on the ones marked (Error)and it will list the details in the bottom middle pane. It should looks something like this...

Faulting application name: ffxivboot.exe, version: 0.9.1.0, time stamp: 0x4c24bc27
Faulting module name: atiumdag.dll, version: 8.14.10.716, time stamp: 0x4b2aa917

Just Cut and Paste it using Cntrl-C and Cntrl-P. I have a feeling this is a video driver issue, and if it is the more info we collect for Square Enix, the better they can present it to ATI for a driver revision. Don't forget to post your DirectX diagnostic info and driver version. This error was occurring with the 10.6 Catalyst Drivers.

Forum page 167 was last read.

Ok, think I found a solution.

1. I completely uninstalled the video drivers and deleted the folders the original installation downloaded to.

2.Rebooted the PC.

3. Downloaded the latest Catalyst Drivers 10.6

4. Disabled all anti-virus software.

5. Installed the latest Catalyst video drivers.

6. Rebooted the PC.

7. Uninstalled the beta client.

8. Disabled all anti-virus/malware/spyware software.

9. Reinstalled the beta client placing the installation in the /Users/Public folder. *I remembered World of Warcraft forcing this folder path when Lich King came out, so I figured, what the ****.

10. Ran the beta client - zero issue.

Now, it could be just one of these things, or all of them, but its enabled me to finally run the beta client without that damned error. It could be that my anti-virus software mucked up the display driver, or the beta install itself. Its entirely possible that any of the downloaded software (driver or client) may have been corrupted. Either way, it's working now - and I hope this may help some of you having the same error.

I was having the exact same issue as many people seem to be having here, and I think I've narrowed it down to the 'atiumdag.dll' file itself.

Steps Taken :
1 - Uninstall ffxiv client.
2 - Located atiumdag.dll at c:\\Windows\system32\atiumd64.dll (holding mouse over the atiumd64.dll file reveals the file description to be the problematic atiumdag.dll file)
3 - Move atiumd64.dll (aka atiumdag.dll) out of this folder and save on desktop or somewhere easy to find in case of problems.
4 - Download and install latest ATI Catalyst drivers (10.6)
5 - Reboot
6 - Install ffxiv client
7 - Launch client... No Problems!

For some reason uninstall/reinstall of the ATI Catalyst drivers did nothing until I moved that atiumd64.dll out of the way. Not entirely sure why, but things work now.

I don't understand why mine isnt figuring out what exactly is causing the error. I know what to do if it is a .dll, but mine gives me no information whatsoever. That is what makes it so frustrating and difficult.

I think this afternoon I am going to do a full reformat, reinstall everything, and see what happens. I honestly do not have a lot of faith in finding a fix at the moment, but I might as well exhaust all options while I'm at it. I can think of other things I would rather do on my Friday afternoon when I get off work. :/

All of the solutions I find say to update the video card drivers, and the rep at SE said the same thing. I told him I had already done it repeatedly and got told to do it again and call back if it didn't help. Almost an hour on hold to get told the exact same thing I am finding online is total BS IMO.

With so many people having this problem in the beta, and now still having it in the retail release it seems as if someone at SE would have had enough sence to contact someone at ATI and say 'hey, we have a problem here...' but then again that would be the logical thing to do and when have we ever seen SE do anything logical?

Okay, I did a complete system restore and once it was over with I did all the windows updates known to man. When those were all complete I put the ffxiv disk in and started the install. I let the installer update my directx, and once all the updates were over and done with I booted up the game.

I got to play for a whole 6 minutes this time, and here is the log from my event viewer. I'm so proud that at least now I am getting a faulting module path!!!

Faulting application name: ffxivgame.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4c9a72c1

Now how do I fix it? Dxdiag says I have version 11.

Well I fixed that fault by updating directx straight from the microsoft site.
I have played with resolution settings as well as some other things in the config.
I changed the latent timer in my bios for pci-e from 64 to 32.
still crashing.

I called tech support for my computer manufacturer, they are stumped. the tech is typing up a report to send to the engineers for review Monday and said I would hear a reply monday eve or tuesday. Hasn't ANYONE with ATI card issues found a sure fix YET? This is more than rediculous with a clean install on a freshly restored system. The only program installed is FFXIV. I haven't even put on my antivirus (Microsoft Security Essentials) and antimalware programs yet. :/

If you are using an xbox 360 controller it is causing a ffxiv.exe crash as well. Should disable the controller and try. Theres just a bunch of people here posting that they have probs and no crash reports. Obviously excluding the guy who did the whole dump lol

Most bugs are solved here if you knew what was failing. the .exe one is still up for grabs as far as I know with the xbox controller being singled out.

My game crashes about 3 times an hour. I literally want to pull my hair out each time.

I'm running a 4870 1g on a fresh Win7 x64 install on a brand new drive.

I first installed latest DX, followed by 10.9 drivers. I've also attempted the 10.8 with no luck as well.
