Despite Lag, FFXIV Blasts OffFollow

#1 Sep 23 2010 at 10:28 PM Rating: Excellent
I was very satisfied with launch day for Final Fantasy XIV. What did everyone else think? Did you find it to be overly complex, or did your downloads take forever? For me, launch day couldn't have been better. Now, let's just hope that version updates are this painless (a gamer can dream, can't he).

Here's my writeup. I'm curious to read what others have to say!

My friend was able to start today however, and he had a good time. he did have a bit of trouble figuring out the payment thing but figured it out after a bit. he too didnt enter the onion helm code in untill after he created his character, so im not sure if he will go back or not lol.

Let me be second on the good first impression.

The game installation/update was a simple straight process, I confess (as many) that had more problems the night before setting my payment information but other than that the game was ready to run maybe 45 minutes after I initially open the CE box.

A lot of the most annoying issues were addressed, the UI is significantly faster, and the game feels over all much more immersing, yesterday I spend most of my time crafting and I can say that this system also feels improved, with the commands more natural and intuitive (like when your orb is red and you use "wait" then it becomes yellow or white like if it cold down).

Lack of inventory sort and check bazaars while running could be my only real complaints with the game itself, although I'm sure these issues will be addressed soon.

It's to the date my best experience with an online game on day one.

I love it! Game has definitely evolved in a fantastic way since Closed Beta for me. I am very glad of the improvements SE chose to make. I can't wait to see how this game is going to be in a year. :) This game is great so far and it can only get better!

I'm not getting nearly as much lag as i thought i would. Just a little skipping here and there in really crowded areas. My server has only crashed once since i have been playing. All in all, i'd say it's a pretty successful launch so far. For me at least. I obviously can't speak for everyone.

On a side note, Aion gave me rubbeer banding effect all the time. I haven't had that yet in FF XIV, so that makes me really happy. :)

At release or all the time in Aion? They had a lot of problems initially with latency due to a bad hop a lot of players around the US were getting routed through.

My only concern is the lack of communication within the community.
It's gotten only slight better because of the new people whom have never played FFXIV.

I never played the beta, and I just finished my first day today(2nd day). I was not really enjoying it at first, but it's starting to get more comfortable now. The lag is minimal considering its a MMO release. I'm impressed. Also, the graphics are stunning; my only complaint about the visuals is the animation could be more elaborate at times, but that's not a big deal really.

In general, everything is smooth, but I do have one complaint, and that's we really need /sea, search functions, and/or AH. It just seems silly to not have 1 or all of these things at launch. AH I can understand not being added until later as it would be really jumpy right now anyway. However, I don't see why /sea and bazaar searches aren't in game.

That being said, I'm a glass half full guy, and I know SE will get around to making these functions in game, and tweaking them until they're right. Besides, on a positive note, the situation should motivate us all to try a variety of crafting classes so we can fulfill a lot of our own very basic needs. Oh and on another note, setting up an account on the SE website was a pain.

All in all, I've had a really clean launch by MMO standards, SE did pretty good in a lot of areas.

For all the flaws that have been pointed out in game. My experience thus far has been really enjoyable. None of the major issues seem to remain on my mind for too long when as the gameplay does a good job of sucking you in, as well as some of the finer points of the story thus far.

I'm excited to see what happens in the future for this game and I'm defiantly glad I picked it up.

If SE's attempt was to mesh single player themes and feels in an MMO context, they're off to a great start. In many ways it just feels right to play. (especially with a controller, it cannot come with a higher recommendation to pick it up, it changes how the game feels entirely.)

I'm sad I have to put it down to go to work.

*blinks* What are you talking about regarding expanding your chat log? You can expand your chat log. You just have to make sure your cursor is in the right place. Or do you mean you can scroll back? I can't recall if I've tried that or not.

Anyway, in answer to your question, my first day was excellent! I had no issues. I got my beta character back with her name. And unlike in the beta where I didn't know what I was doing right off ... and thus ended up dying by fungus ... *LOL* ... I'm kicking **** and taking names right now. So yeah. I had an EXCELLENT launch / Day 1. :O) I haven't had a chance to play since then though. Hoping to play LOTS this weekend.

Oh ... and one other thing. I'd NEVER seen that full length movie before. It gave me chills ... CHILLS! I loved it. :O)

Not sure if it was the patch yesterday, updated ATI drivers or changing my resolution but the lag has improved a lot for me.
