Suggestion for those doing the Ul'dah storyline (SPOILER)Follow

#1 Sep 23 2010 at 10:56 PM Rating: Decent
When doing the storyline in Ul'dah depending on if you run off to level for awhile, unequip your armor before entering the fight at the Coliseum at the Gladiator's Guild. The battle you're pitted against is one you cannot win and there's no point in fighting as the skill-ups you receive will not be counted unless you can defeat the target. Unfortunately the game rigs this and you cannot defeat your opponent (It just sits there with a sliver of life left regardless how much damage you dish out.) so your options are to wait out the 5 minutes and take damage to your equipment or just allow yourself to be KO'd depending on your level. You'll save yourself the costs having to repair your weapon/armor so soon. Just a head's up.

And I don't know about retail, but when I died in the coliseum, I was dead after the cutscene and had to release all the way back to the camp. Then run back to the Guild and restart the instance. Did this happen for anyone else? It was BS of the highest degree!

I did that part about a half-hour ago, as long as you don't choose to "Return" it ends the match and plays the cutscene after. Once that completes you get kicked back into the instance where you resurrect (No death penalty either btw.) with full health. With Conjurer I survived the first two times (Once in beta, and the other in retail. I just restarted recently.) using Cure and was able to effortlessly demolish my opponent. But you're stuck in the battle for 5 minutes with nothing to do but Cure and attack. You gain skill-ups but they don't carry over after the match ends from the 5 minute timer since you can't physically beat your opponent. Instead you get a message saying "Playername is defeated." and it kicks you out giving the usual "you lost" speech during the CS.

I noticed that as well. I went into the fight as a rank 2 Marauder and thumped on the guy counting all my delicious skillups and the noticed that I had hit him 3 times with his HP at the final sliver and it didn't move. My HP was at 20% when it ended the match and told me i lost. At first I thought it was a bug...then I realized it was just poorly scripted :P They need to buff your opponent a bit, methinks.

My guess is they expect you to go from the Adventurer's Guild to the Camp then back to Ul'dah and straight to the Gladiator's Guild for the fight skipping the Guildleve. You can do it if you want, but so far the first half of the missions until its completed are overly easy. You can one-shot pretty much everything during the escorts too. As it is I doubt many realize there's more to it than going to the camp and bashing in the heads of anything that moves.

But off-topic I wish Gridania's story was more interesting... I switched nationalities (restart since it's so easy to level if you've only played for an hour or so.) just to try Gridania's and so far I am not the least impressed. I'll likely be switching back to Ul'dah. Shame the city is just so overly populated on my server. :/

I just run around the gladiator match in circles until it ends.
