My FFXIV Install ExperienceFollow

Hope this isn't redundant as I spent reading through countless dozens of posts for something similar to my experience.

So I just bought the game hours ago. Followed the great instructions on the ZAM forum getting the SE account and billing and promotional codes set up.

Moved on to install the game. So far so good for me, until I double click the Final Fantasy XIV desktop icon on my desktop.

Now the SE game manual says an update may or may not occur and I understand one took place today. My problem is I know of no one personally who plays this game to refrence if my PC is responding the way it should. There is no photo in the guide nor on their lodestone website to visually display what the customer experience may be.

When cicking the icon on my desktop I get a pop up black screen titled Final Fantasy XIV with a white pointing glove. Nothing else happens or sometimes it will say FINAL Fantasy XIV (Not Responding). But the Black screen and glove are always there mocking me.

Is this the box where the update should be occuring?
Is this what others specifically experienced?
If I leave the window open will it eventually respond (the little windows blue circle swirly is still thinking when I mouse over it)?
My internet connection is fine.
I just built this computer weeks ago Win 7 64, AMD X6 1055T, 8GB RAM, ATI HD 5800 Video, I think it should be fine as far as set up goes.

The one thing i did not understand on the lodestone website what "64-bit operating systems will run in WoW64 (Windows on Windows 64) mode" meant and if it was something I had to change myself on my system.

Thanks kindly and I look forward to some helpful feed back.

I'm having the exact same issue .. but I was able to play it smoothly before. Just today, my client suddenly stopped working, it started to freeze .. I can get ingame, don't get me wrong, but it freezes from time to time.

I've also built a completely new rig from scratch, so hardware is not an issue, and so is my internet connection.

Anyone else experiencing this, or might have a solution?

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I'm still having it.

Well I fixed the problem I had initally with just a black box and glove displaying. I started fresh this morning and uninstalled/reinstalled the game. I updated the ATI catalyst driver for HD Series PCIe that was recently posted on 15SEP10. Now when launching the game instead of a black screen and glove the update is launching! Yippie almost there! I have anywhere of 1 to 9 hrs to wait. Download speeds may vary lol!

i fixed my problem by running it in window mode. somehow fullscreen makes my game crash now .. which was running fine the last few days, until today.

Ok so the update is still loading at 21.2% so far. I did the peer to peer UDP add to the router and it looks like it took, I guess other wise it would not be at 21% so far. But geesh 6 hrs to get 21.2%. For very long periods of time I see an Upload speed but 0 B/s for download speed.

Is this what others have experienced trying to get an update? I hope to actually create a chracter sometime this weekend lol.

Apparently you cant get the update with any speed using a Netgear WNR854T router, be it ported in with ethernet or wireless.

I moved everything to the Qwest DSL modem plugged in and got the update in an hours time.

So 48 hours later I now have the update. Got to the login screen.

New problem error code 216 for wrong version of windows. Now I have windows 7 64 bit. There is nothing in this game manual that says what to chage alyhough on the package i purcased it says

64 Bit OS will run in WOW64 (Windows on Window64) mode

What does that mean? 48 hrs and still havent got this game started is really bothersome

Sorry about the new error you have. The solution to your slow update was a good idea. I've seen some say to use certain router configs but bypassing the router completely is a great idea. I had lunch and changed the oil in my gf's car and still had another 30min to wait when I got back. I should have thought of that myself. I wonder if others have had similar results by plugging in to the dsl or cable modem directly.

Also FYI
Some have said their rig plays smoother than with the demo. I played around with the demo and the CE install on a laptop with most of the minimum requirements and found the demo to accurately reflect the gameplay. With windows 7 64bit, core 2 duo 2.5, nvidia mobile gt230m (ugh), and 4GB ram I can play...but it's pretty choppy (fps 12-20 on low settings at 1280x720) and cut scene load times are a drag. IMHO unless you have a laptop similar to the RECOMMENDED not MINIMUM hardware, your playing experience may be somewhat less than optimal. And to compare with other mmorpg's: eq2, wow,aoc all play fine at max settings including aax4 with fps much >30...but it's not any surprise that Ffxiv is more demanding.

yeah i am pretty ticked off at this point.

Now after downloading the update and launching either the game of XIV config I get a version of this file is not compatible with version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system info to see whether you need x86 (32-Bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

This is BS. I could navigate fine before the update, but cant play the game unti updated. Now I finally get the update and cant launch the game.

This is worse than hoping a Raise comes along in some remote far off zone =(.

My theory is that I am not in windowed mode since previous to the update and playing around with settings to begin with. So when the update loaded I can no longer access that application because of a 32/64 mix match preventing anything from displaying now.

Now I have to uninstall everything. Move the PC to where the cable comes out of the wall. Reinstall the game. Make sure it is in windowed mode. Download the update and try again. Hopefully not another 48 hours.

This is ridiculous. I shoulda waitied till the 30th and saved 30 bucks with the same amount of headache.

Finally in the world of Saronia as of 19:00 25SEP. What a pain. SE can make a kick **** game but suck in Technical Writing in manuals. My fix that I think occured was for Windows 7 64 bit atleast, do not double click the desktop icon, instead right click it and run as Administrator.

FFXIV Install Windows 7 64 Bit with ATI HD 5#### Series Graphics
1) first followed the instructions of
to do the inital SE Account set up and stuff

2)I went to ATI and updated my catalyst drivers to one released in Sep of 2010

3) Went to the first point of ethernet from the ISP in preperation of update after inital FFXIV install

4) Installed FFXIV game, it will default to the C drive as a program on x86 for Windows 7 64 bit, as it should.

5) After install completes went to start Start> All Programs> Square Enix>Final Fanatsy XIV Config and ensured it was set for English, changed nothing else.

6) On Windows 7 64 bit right click (do not double click), right click and run as administartor. This is when the peer to peer update will start. Do not interrupt the process. Ensure the PC is setup not to sleep.
At this point if you hadn't bypassed your home router (like in step 3 suggesed) as I found my own Netgear router WNR854T was not seeing the remote connections to recieve the peer to peer down load, be sure to plug staright into the ISP. It may take 3 to 5 minutes before seeing remote connections dispalyed on the screen so dont freak right away. If you had plugged straigt into the ISP and you still do not see remote connections, be prepared for a very long donload.

7) After the update and when ever launching the game, right click and run as administartor for Windows 7 64 Bit.

Hope this helps someone out as I figured this out solo. Someone probally posted something similar but I still cant search the threads although some threads suggested you could.

That was my experience of a long wasted weekend for an install. But I am in and loving the game so far. Now its Sunday "Are you ready for some Football!?" ****
