Hiring any retainer crashes characterFollow

At the exact moment I hired a Keeper of the Moon retainer from Ul'dah, FFXIV stopped working.

I can no longer log all the way in, it gets to the loading screen where you can just start to hear the music and then it says "FFXIV has stopped working" and crashes to desktop. Every time.

I have a second character that can log in and out just fine.

It would seem there is a bug in one of the Keepers of the Moon retainers in Ul'dah. My only option is to email SE, and hope they patch the retainer later and my guy is fixed. I'm a little worried that I will simply put time into another character that becomes bugged.

EDIT: I'e used my second character to troubleshoot. Hiring any retainer crashes the game.

I was able to recreate the crash amd confirm the bug.

I deleted my second character, started a new one in Ul'dah, and selected the same retainer. Crash and burn.

The retainer's name is Urha Lihzeh, Keeper of the Moon, in Ul'dah.

If anyone has an empty character spot they would be willing to test on, please try to hire Urha and confirm this is not something unique to my PC.

No problem. In about an hour and 21 minutes I'll be calling the Support center.

BTW, the actual phone number for support is on the very back page of the game manual in tiny text at the bottom.

So the support center asked me a number of things.

Update Windows 7: check
Update NVidia drivers: Check
Lower Graphic settings: Lowest

Specs i7 860 Quad with 4g RAM and a Nvidia GTS 250

By troubleshooting on my second character, I was able to determine that this occurs for any retainer that I hire. Game works up until hiring a retainer, then that character crashes and cannot log in again.

SE's answer is that I play on my second character without a retainer until they can fix the problem.

So my main guy is in limbo indefinitely. Joy.

Maybe try reinstalling the game and re-patching everything again?

Also, clean install of your video card drivers. Maybe even one version previous. Although I'm using 2x GTX 275's in SLI with the newest drivers without issues.

If other people are able to hire retainers, then it is a problem with your setup specifically.

Just keep us up to date Rufus. I haven't bought a retainer yet, may wait to see how your situation turns out.

I was recently able to crash the game at another cutscene. Right at the "Flowers for all" cutscene in Ul'dah's opening sequence.

Yesterday, I could get past this scene to test the retainer hiring. This new cutscene crash did not keep my character from logging in. However, he could not advance past the "Flowers for all" without crashing.

It does seem to be an issue with my specific setup, although it is clearly triggered by hiring a retainer. It has something to do with cutscenes. But after hiring a retainer, I would guess am locked into that hiring cutscene and it makes it so I crash exactly at login.

I can't be sure that others will not have this problem. At least I can remake a new character in my second slot and play, but I'm thinking I'll have to fix something on my side to get my Main out of Limbo. The issue has been logged and I sent a Bug report.

I'll post again as soon as I figure out a fix.
