My first impressions of FFXIV? Too difficult to get started (I had a heck of a time with torrents and what-not) and too difficult to put down when you finally do get to play!

Like most? Graphics
Like least? No Auction House

Let me start off by saying, I really want to like this game. At the moment, I cannot say that and find it very difficult to say anything postive about it. Sure, it has pretty graphcis, but there are way too many areas with this game that I have a problem with.

For starters, just even logging in game is a hassle and the load time for screens.

Battle mechanics are horrible, too slow. I just don't like the feel of it AT ALL.

The game itself seems way too complicated and confusing. I can't even find mobs to fight, they are usually claimed. I find myself chasing after a wharf rat before anyone else claims it.

Don't understand the party system, way too confusing. Crafting is a hassle and overly complicated in many ways.

This stupid 'mickey mouse hand' pointer just looks stuipid and childish. Equipping items is a pain. UI is terrible.

This game is a big disappointment to me. I think I'm going to keep trying to like it, but Aion is looking better and better. I was a ff fan for many years, played ffxi for 5 years. I think they went in the wrong direction with this game. They should have just given a facelift to ffxi. When I played ffxi, I couldn't wait to log in again. I'm not getting that vibe with this game. I'm forcing myself to give it a go.

What I like most: The soloability and the ease with which you can change jobs. I like being able to change from Pugilist to Miner in a snap if I pass by a mining point otw to a leve. That and the game is gorgeous. The difference between FFXI and other games I've played is really stark.

What I don't like the most so far would be the connectivity issues. I'm not sure if this is game side or my side, but every so often I'll get a "Game Server has encountered an error" and I'll be unable to log back on for quite awhile. That's actually why I'm typing this post instead of playing right now lol. I'm hoping that this is just a temporary thing while the game gets its sea legs.

Likes:

- the ability to solo
- improved graphics
- improved job/class system
- massive maps to explore

Dislikes:

- The grind seems longer than before
- No AH?
- No housing/Ninja/Samurai
- Harsh hardware requirements

Just a quick dirty list, some will be addressed others will not. It feels like a DX 11 game, but its not. A little sad my GTX 260 from 6 months ago struggles with this game. Not sure why the NVIDIA drivers aren't optimized yet, I'm sure it's coming though.

Its shaping up to be a great game, but frankly many things confused me, which I have been flamed for, for just expressing my opinion but I will do it again:

/startrant

- FFXIV website sucks period
- No pvp (at least make it optional for the NA crowd)
- Setup ur shop but no AH? Ok more computers running needlessly, more players to draw, more lag and lower FPS for everyone because I have snail shells or willow branches to sell. ???
- Laggy to engage and disengage from combat (a 3 to 5 second procedure)
- I'm not lagging in Ogrimar now, I'm lagging at all these damned crystals.
- Crazy hardware requirements! If this is cutting edge in 4 years we should be concerned.
- Even the world famed sound director looks lazy and tired. The soundtrack is GOOD but not EPIC.
- Collectors edition seems a way to milk money .... %75 dollars for a onion hat?

Don't get me wrong, I've been into Final Fantasy since 2 - I like the company, and like the work they do but this one has been rough on me. I've been thinking about building a brand new icore rig just for this game and then that made me mad. My comp is only 6 months old! So instead of replacing my computer once every 2 years i gotta do it every 6 months now? Don't they know DDR prices and SSD drives are still crazy expensive?

This project was and is too ambitious. They should have relaxed on the polygon count a little bit and opened it up to people. Instead the beginning is made intentionally to annoy and frustrate certain demographics of people. I know this isn't wow, or any other mmo out there but you don't have to make customers suffer so much.

Hardware mouse still? - this indicates 3rd party driver support is slow coming?

I love the game still with it's flaws and if I have to build a liquid nitrogen cooled hexcore to run the dame core with 4 graphics cards just to hit 1920 resolution at full 60 fps then fine. But don't expect me to be happy SE!

I really like the way it feels, the way everything fits together. I like that there are fewer zones.

I don't like that they left out some of the commands that made previous games more playable, like /sea, /follow, using the arrows to control the camera and having a key that targets the nearest NPC.

I'm sure this will get worked out in time, that's what updates and expansions are for.

So in theory only one person needs to get every aetheryte, and then he can start teleporting people around to allow them to get the aetherytes without walking to them?

Beginner equipment nowhere to be seen
UI... just... please... kill it.

I love how I click on something and it takes seconds for the next menu to appear.
Click Buy.... wait.... wait.... Item list slowly spits up on my screen.

-Soloability
-Crafters have their own classes
-Guildleves
-Anima/Teleporting

Dislike:
-Crafting (come on, seriously? I have to MEMORIZE the recipes I earn? Put them in a freaking menu and let me select them); also, I hate having to do the selections while crafting. I prefered FFXI's system.
-Menus (It feels like I need to go through multiple screens any time I want to do something)
-Menu/Game lag (multiple seconds to get through some menus or do attacks. Plus, doing guildleves, I can sometimes get completely out of site of the Aetheryte before it actually activates it)
-Lack of content in the lower level game. No quests, not a lot of guidance or goals.
-No mog house.
-No AH.
-Very low weapon/armor selection in lower levels
-No Ballista/Brenner
-Although I liked that I could solo, I feel like there should be some encouragement to party. Right now, there doesn't seem to be.
-Guildleve refresh timer
-Supposed 15 hour exp limit? I keep reading that, after 15 hours, no more XP gain. This is a REALLY dumb idea. What if you log on and explore the world for a little bit???

Honestly, I really want to like this game, but I'm having a really hard time with it.

That sounds like a really bad idea. FFXI did this better by at least requiring people to have visited the crystal once before allowing you to warp to it.

doesnt work that way its actually an "amount" that is depicted to be 8-15 hours in combat and killing stuff. Running around doing whatever will have no ill effects on it.

I do wish they worded it better, saying it in "hours" pretty much means that anyone new to it is going to automatically assume its time based which is very bad.

Pro:
*Graphics are stupendous, it's beautiful
*Soloability
*Class changes are easy
*Not having to pay full character price for mule/retainers
*Guildleves for all classes, right off the bat
*Easy teleports

Con:
*LACK OF AN AUCTION HOUSE
*Camera controls
*Too few leves
*Basically being forced to craft. I was a digger/miner/fisher in FFXI, I like to supply raw materials for people, I didn't particularly like crafting itself. (44 JC,32 Cooking ftw)
*Recipe lists? Come on, if we can't alt/tab out to look stuff up, give us in-game resources.
*Too many menus to go thru for basic buying/selling to vendors. Actually, too many menus period.

Biggest con for me tho... the sinking feeling I should have waited til PS3 release and not spent $1k to upgrade my pc. Having been in the NA release for FFXI may have blinded me to the failings of SE since 2003. (And if Noz is reading this, I know you're saying 'Told you so!')

Game seems faily lazily made. Seems like SE tried to do the absolute minimum to get this thing out. **** one thing that annoyed me right of the bat is, when you switch to first person view. You cant see your weapon, and when you use it you cant see that either. It just shows damage to the enemy but nothing outgoing from your end.

Things I like:

Battle System - Personally I think they nailed it. The pacing just feels really good, although the lag is messing with it a bit.

Crafting - I have NEVER been much of a crafter in other MMORPG's but here its fantastic. I have just as much fun crafting as I do killing mobs.

Graphics/Animations - The game is very pretty and the animations are usually very fluid.

The Music - I actually like the music for this game quite a bit so far. Only a track or two I find a bit weak but loving the rest.

Large Zones - It is VERY nice not to have to load every time I move in or out of a city or around the large zones. The starter areas are huge with lots of areas to explore.

The Armory System - The amount of customization you can do on your character is AWESOME. I can't wait for more jobs to see what else I can stick on my pugilist.

Things I don't like:

No Auction House - Yeah we all don't like it, if nothing else at least give us a search for the market wards.

NPC Side Quests - This is something I really liked from FFXI that I haven't seen at all here. Yes there is the main plot and guildleves, but it was nice to stumble across requests from talking to random NPC's that lead into nice little stories of their own.

Clunky UI/Menus - Even though I use the keyboard primarily for everything there is still some work that can be done on the menus and overall UI.

No Housing - I thought I remember SE stating they would like to include housing of some sort a while back in one of their interviews, so hopefully it'll be implemented sometime.

All in all though i'm really loving the game and none of the problems I have with it are game breakers for me. I'm still pretty optimistic that a lot of the issues people are having with the game will get addressed sometime. Regardless i'm happy in my new home.

Likes:
  • Drop-dead gorgeous graphics that make for an immersive experience. Stresses the heck outta my graphics card, but it is worth it. Prettiest MMO ever.
  • Flexible character system that allows one character to progress in all areas
  • A well-thought out and elaborate fantasy world that isn't just elves and dwarves
  • Don't feel lead by the nose through a linear start-up experience
  • I love exploring in games, and FF XIV really rewards an 'explorer' type player like me
  • Rich crafting system that is very demanding, but makes creating things feel like an accomplishment instead of just "oh look I clicked once and it's done". The challenge to balance speed w/quality is cleverly done.
  • Not sure if it's just coincidence or if SE has found a way to effectively discourage it, but I saw refreshingly few trash/joke names. Most other MMOs have tons of character names that are either lame attempts at cleverness or just plain lame, but I'm seeing a lot less of that in FF XIV so far.

Dislikes:
  • An awkward and inefficient UI that does its best to break the immersion the beautiful graphics work so hard to create. By far the greatest weakness.
  • Not handing everything to you on a plate is all well and good, but some things go to far, like no on-screen reference for crafting recipes your character has supposedly learned
  • That stupid reminder before each play session to not forget RL. Adds one more click to a click-heavy game, and patronizing on top of it all.

At the time FF XI came out I really admired the graphics and world-building they'd done, but found the horrible UI, long distances to run, and a host of other things that just drove me up the wall. I stopped playing it after one month. It's interesting to see FF XIV has many similar strengths and weaknesses, but the strengths are stronger, and the weaknesses not nearly as heinous, so I can see myself playing this for quite awhile!

Granted, I've only been able to play for a few hours, but running around as a Gladiator, the ability Red Lotus requires MP and I could find nothing to regenerate it. A search online told me that you could either go to a camp, a city or use Tranquility, which is a Conjurer specific ability.

But I'll refrain from responding to your insult with another one about assuming everyone using MP is a conjurer. :)

Thaumaturge gets a corresponding ability, Exaltation. Your MPs replenish when you touch *any* Aethyric site, not just the ones in camps and cities. All the teleport sites do so, including the temp one that appears when you complete a leve.

here's why i see this not changing much. there is no way to build rapport with players outside of your little clique, re: linkshell. without a global chat system, there is no way to continue chatting with players while you adventure. if you walk outside of the populated areas you are quite literally all alone.

while i'm sure this is within the scope of the developers "vision" it's rather fail from a perspective that this is a social mmorpg.

I agree with you entirely. It's like you pulled this post directly out of my mind... I fell in love with FFXI, and was so excited to play this one. I am kicking myself for spending the money for the collectors edition now... So... who else wants to dust off the AION discs?
