I personally recommend putting most of your stat points into VIT, then DEX after that. STR is good, but doesn't help you out when you can't hit the mob. If you have enough VIT, you should live long enough to kill things. For the first few levels, I'd put 1-2 points in DEX and the rest in VIT. When one or both get too far ahead of STR, put a few points into that to catch it up some. Also, I try not to assume anything, so I apologize if this insults your intelligence (I promise that's not my intent), but make sure you are only fighting mobs that have the blue or green circle next to their name for difficulty. I know that a lot of people haven't learned about the difficulty ratings yet necessarily, especially if they're new, so I want to clear that up too, as it might be part of your problem.

There seem to be MOB types that even when they con green or blue will destroy you depending on your class. At least in my experience Startail Marmots that con Blue and sometimes Green give me a very hard time on PUG but on MAR I don't seem to miss them as often. Which is odd since I would think that PUG should hit more often just for less dmg since I assume it's a DEX friendly class.

I find shrooms to be the easiest kills as they turn slow and you can get behind them for almost every hit, the poison can be nasty if you're low level but you shouldn't have a problem when you get a self healing ability. You might want to level either PUG and/or MAR to get their healing abilities before returning to your hunter

Make sure you are fighting enemies that are checking green or blue to you. STR and DEX should be near even with VIT slightly behind those stats. If you try anything higher you may die to easily at your level.
