Hands down, this is the worst MMO I have ever played. The controls and combat system are completely unintuitive. The graphics are so-so and the lag is horrendous. If I want an MMO, I guess I'll go back to WoW. It also took me an entire day to update at an amazing 32 Kbytes/second.

I have no choice but to use the keyboard or a gamepad? Goodbye N52 Speedpad that worked so beautifully in STO, WoW, LOTRO, and AOC. Oh, and errors are in Japanese. That's helpful.

I really regret buying this game. Going to cancel my account now and add it to the pile of epic failure and some day in the future I'll have a bonfire to celebrate.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I don't care. I don't intend to check back here. I just want to vent and let others know how horrible this game is and if I can prevent one of you from buying it, then I've made the world a better place.

In FFXI, everything was great except for the pain in the *** leveling past 60. In FFXIV it seems like they're trying way too hard to be different. The status quo works for a reason; you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

On a scale of 1-10

Graphics: 7
Combat System: 2
Controls: 2
Latency: 1.5
Overall Performance: 3

Overall Rating: 2.5

was reading review of XI and thought it was funny, so for everybody complaining, think i'll post it:

Quote:
Famitsu rated Final Fantasy XI 38 out of 40.[87] Computer and Video Games Magazine noted that it was one of the most welcoming MMORPG's despite the cumbersome initial registration and setup.[91] IGN called it a well done but unoriginal game and also noted that North American players were forced to play with already much more experienced Japanese players who had already completed the game's various quests.[14] GameSpot criticized it at release for having an unconventional control system, a lengthy installation, and having no player versus player (PvP) aspects.[92] Other elements receiving criticism include the EXP grind, which involves constant battles to access different parts of the game, and overcrowded camp sites.[93] The expansions have been mostly positively received, with praise for the amount of content added, but increasing signs that the graphics of the game are becoming outdated.[94][95] IGN review of the Xbox 360 release was similar, noting that it was a large amount of game content, but had a protracted setup process and elements of the game design that require a large time investment.[96]

and just remind them that they've lasted EIGHT years... think the game will do ok without ya lol

ragnarok, maple story, everquest, all these games lasted a long time, doesnt mean theyre good intuitive games, doesnt mean wow is even that good (its just very user friendly), every game will do ok without people, but as for a respected game in a money making industry, nope ffxiv will not do very well.

I find it funny that someone can call FFXIV's graphics "so-so" and then say they're going back to WoW.

yeah i personally am dissapointed in this launch so far. im a professional person IRL and this is just a horrible, un-professional launch to me. ive been playing mmos for ages now and just... idk, man.
BUT the graphics are the best ive seen in any mmo. aion was pretty, but most of it was just bloom effect.

Yeah, FFXIV's graphics are much better than WoW. I didn't say I was going back to WoW. I was looking for something new and refreshing, not something difficult and frustrating. Graphics mean very little in the end if the game is cumbersome.

He's talking about final fantasy 14, not 11.

And I'm sorry but the graphics are so-so, everything is bland. Crystal tools look ok but definitely not better than Aion.

WoW is much much smoother. Less clunky. So far I have yet to see a zone that made me go "Wow that looks badass" in this game. WoW has.

Granted I have not been far lol.

I'll be honest, I found FFXI to be very difficult and frustrating. I stuck it out for a bit to learn the ropes though and I ended up playing for seven years. =\

I say try to open your mind to a different kind of game, understanding that not all MMOs have to play like WoW reskinned. It has a lot of flaws, but I've found it to be generally fun.

Isn't that more lag than quality of graphics? What does clunkiness have to do with graphics?

Lag is not the issue. This game at 60fps does not run as smooth as other games at 60fps. I assume over time it will be fixed.

Hmmm maybe I am using the wrong terms. Maybe animation, or movement of the models is what I am looking for.

This.

Alot of the same was said about FFXI when I tried to convince friends in other MMO's, that XI was really a rewarding game. I'm not saying XIV is anywhere near perfect, but there's alot of potential to this game. Sure, there may be a lack of instant gratification, use of a menu system will put some people off (mainly those, who only have played hotbar onry UI games). There's a bit I find myself frustrated with. But similar to Pikko's experience, I had a **** of a time starting off in FFXI, but 6 years later, I still find it hard to give up entirely because it was that much fun.

I always chalk it up to those who prefer to eat their sunflower seeds, peanuts, etc shelled vs unshelled. To me, Shelled just tastes better, even if it requires a bit of effort and patience on my end!

Going back to this, this isn't fair either. Those "wow that looks badass" zones you speak of in WoW, were those in the first 2-3 zones you visited? If you haven't been far, then what exactly were you expecting from a newbie area?

I agree with most of you, the graphics are gorgeous, especially on a higher end PC that can run the game on high settings. It's a terrible, terrible shame that the game plays so bad. They really shouldn't have tried so hard to get the game out before Cataclysm, another few months working on the UI, menu systems and server speeds would have done the game wonders. As it stands, I have been looking forward to this game since it was referred to as Rapture, and after open beta I cancelled my pre-order.

Here's to hoping there are vast improvements before PS3 launch, then I'll look into it again.

I'm not sure whats wrong with the combat system, my pug is 11 and its already become much more active as I need to move according to my enemies actions and at times blow my sta for damage or save it to hit the right attacks at right moments or ensure I have time to move if my target begins a charge up.

Its not FAST combat, but its a great system so long as your not judging it on the first 10 levels, or just grind out weakling blue enemies for your entire session (which give crap skill anyways).

I'm referring to the fact that people seem to expect everything to be exactly where they were for WoW in regards to hotkeys, menus, etc etc so that they can jump in this game and expect it to work exactly the same. I said in the very next sentence that the game has a lot of flaws, so it's not like I'm saying it doesn't need improvement. I mean, how dumb is it that we don't even have a mailing system?

Mail.

The ability to boot/promote/demote people in LS unless they're withing spitting distance.

Ability to trade more than 4 items at a time.

Ability to /sea

These are things that XI had and XIV needs desperately.

It just seems to me that the game was just not ready. I get control issues and horrible lag when I turn on ao. This didn't happen in open beta. I think they basically needed money to finish developing he game that's why they released it in its current state. I would honestly have to agree with tc and say anyone who hasn't purechased this game don't buy it now. Wait a few months until they iron out the issues.

The OP make ALOT of valid points. I fear that this game is going to be a big FLOP if they don't fix alot of issues immediately, otherwise, they will just have their core ff players that are going to accept anything that SE serves them. The battle system in this game is HORRID and lacks any lustre. Fwiw, Aion I find to be more appealing, battle wise and I find the graphics to be just as equal or better. Also, the account managment system is so nice.

However, I'm a loyal fan, and I plan to give this a go. But right now, I feel like I wanted to buy a cake and paid for a cake, but got sold the batter.

I love how people are using Aion as a measuring stick now. I liked Aion, don't get me wrong, but it's apples and oranges.
Aion's graphics are colorful. Trees are purple and blue. But, when i walk around in Aion, i don't feel like i'm in a realistic environment at all. The armor and weapon designs are what i liked best. The gameplay sucked.
Open world PVP leads to too many problems IMO.

Not sure if you are still reading the forums but here goes.

    1) When WoW is "smoother"

    a) Lesser graphics <-- seriously, you do understand what this means?

    b) Server location. For those who peeps that played WoW from Asia, WoW is not smooth at all, it does lag like crazy at times because servers are in the US. Latency and Ping. FFXIV this time round is in Japan. For us Asians, latency and ping are generally better.

There are also other factors. For example, your ISP. Where your ISP source their overseas bandwidth. Yes, your ISP need to source for overseas bandwidth provider.

    c) You ever played WoW when it first released, its does not play smooth at all. Even to those living in the US.

    2) "Badass zones"

    a) You are still at starter zone. Have you taken a boat ride to other starter zones? <--- I think thats all the answer you need to know.

I hate how the main arguing point people seem to have about the game being good or not tends to go about the graphics, that shows how bad and how many problems the game has if thats the BEST most people can say about it. If the graphics were crap I don't think anyone would have much good to say at all.

I like pretty graphics but is that the main thing anyone can come up with? Graphics should be looow in the armoury of reasons the game is good, Aion looked amazing when the game came out that didn't mean a thing if you hated the game system and that game is near dead now, so much for selling everything on pretty graphics.

I think one key thing is what was said about pushing the PC version out asap before Cataclysm, this was a huge mistake I think. FFXIV will take a nosedive in population when Cata does come out and I don't think it will recover those players either, they tried to grab them before the wow expansion and hold them but the game is so bad that's not going to happen, once somethinhg new and fun comes out the population will take big hits.

14 will do ok and last quite a few years but I don't think it will honestly compare very well to other games, even FF11... long-term.

Kinda reminds me of WAR (-_-lll

After its lackluster release, the crew that made the game got gutted real bad. Layoffs, etc, etc.

Are we looking at the same fate as WAR?

    Only time will tell.

I had a 10 trial account for WoW, played it for about an hour. That game is seriously boring.. It seems to be made for people who are easily amused. Then again that explains why its soo popular, there are alot of stupid people in the world.

There isn't much difference between the "FF-- is dying!" and the "FF-- is gonna flop" threads, is there?

There actually is. One is right and the other is wrong.

The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

    I thought of it first:

Opinion =/= fact. Flop is a harsh word. I don't see it happening. What i see happening, is a bunch of people jumping ship, leaving behind a smaller, dedicated group of players keeping it alive. Then, as if it were magic, all those that jumped ship will return in a year.
Then, the threads will all look like this:
    Returning player help?
    Hi, i just came back!
So, what's new with FF XIV?
Did they change so and so?

Yeah... we have all seen this before.

I'll be honest - I was disappointed with FFXIV at first. I mean, they don't explain many game mechanics well, and it's very possible to miss what explanations there are. The menus are clunky, and require too many button presses (why do they make us press that last Equip button at all?) Trying to upgrade your gear is a pain because no vendors sell what you need (not that you know that at first), there's no auction house, the player markets are hidden, and even when you do find them there's no search function. Some areas have you wandering around for an hour just to fight a half-dozen enemies because the creature density is so low and the newbie areas are overflowing. Confusion, frustration and tedium marked my first couple days of playing FFXIV.

That being said, if you give it a chance then you will find your groove. You will learn how guildleves work, will learn the geography better, learn how to craft, learn how to repair your stuff, get used to the menus, find some friends and get used to the chat commands. FFXIV is not the most accessible game in the world, despite Squeenix's stated goals. But once you get past your rookie frustrations, you will find an enjoyable game that will only get better as they continue to fine-tune everything.

Ultima Online, Everquest I and II, WoW, and FFXI all went through their growing pains. All of them made significant improvements and refinements over the years. FFXIV will be no different.

I'll try again in a couple of weeks. Maybe they'll fix some issues. At this point I can barely move the lag is so bad. I'm certain it's not my internet as my wife can raid in WoW with a 30 ms ping. And we can easily support several computers running various MMO's because we often have friends or family over playing WoW and Star Trek Online. And it's not a fps issue. I figure it has something to do with the servers; maybe they're overpopulated, I don't know. I'm going to give Square-Enix the benefit of the doubt and give them a chance to fix it.

I created a melee style character and the gameplay was a little bit easier in terms of the combat system being less cumbersome. I was able to kill the two mobs on the ship before the lag hit and I could barely move.

My original post was out of frustration, I'll admit that, but I still think it's mostly accurate. I really want this game to work. I loved FFXI up to level 60 and I guess I was hoping for something similar.

I don't know if it's even worth acknowledging, but the overall rating I was referring to didn't equal an average. I wouldn't weigh graphics even close to combat, game play, controls and performance. I probably shouldn't have even rated it at all, I think the game speaks for itself really. I didn't plan on coming back here, but I kind of felt bad for flaming the game and ultimately think I should give it a bigger chance. There's always time to fix things.

If in a couple of weeks the gameplay improves and the lag wanes, then I will come back here and retract my statements about how poor I feel the game is. Really, every MMO at launch that I've played has been incredibly laggy and somewhat buggy, FFXIV has just been the worst so far. If it's not buggy, then there are serious problems.

Also, is anyone having issues with login? My initial load, where it checks the version goes completely black and eventually comes back with an error in Japanese. The game then freezes and performs and illegal operation. This occurs until I reboot my computer.

I do regret buying the collector's edition and not waiting for the standard version as I feel like I paid an extra what, $25 to beta test the release? lol

    Dude..

    The servers are in Japan.

The reason you get 30ms in WoW raids is because its in the US.

The peeps I know that play WoW from Asia, are getting the best 800ms++. At times 2K. And thats the ping before any raids.

Theres also a host of other reasons. For example (>...<, your ISP overseas bandwidth provider.
