Gameplay making us sick and dizzy! Any tips?Follow

As I have stated before, I am one of those wonderful tech-stupid folks who give techie folks hours of hilarity at my epic cluelessness. So please be kind in responding.

Coming straight out of 6 years on FFXI, I was totally stoked about XIV. Still am, even after endless headaches in getting to that magical place where the game actually RAN. :P

My issue is that gameplay is wonky for me! I tried playing with the keyboard/mouse and thought, "There has GOT to be a better way." Forward. Stop. Change camera angle. Forward. Left. Change camera angle. This made it quite difficult to vie for mobs in an already crowded area, lol.

So we (DH and I) bought Logitech gamepads, thinking that this would be better. That answer was yes, and no. Now, instead of stopping and starting, we bounce around like hummingbirds on crack. It makes my husband motion sick, and my eyes start to cross. I yearn for the smooth movements of FFXI. I see others running around easily, so I know that folks smarter than I have an answer...halp!

It's funny, I see tons of folks bagging on a million different game aspects...but all of those are chicken scratch if you cannot move without a trash can nearby.

This sounds like a side effect of old age :X

Barring that, it might be your monitor/video card/drivers/settngs in ffxiv config.

I kinda know what you're talking about; I kinda wish there was an option for the camera to auto follow you, so it would feel a little smoother.

I'm not aware of one existing, but I hope one gets added.

I don't mean this to be offensive, but can't you turn the view with the mouse at the same time you are WASDing it on your keyboard? This is how I move(and actually how I move in most other MMOs as well) and I like it a lot. A camera follow would be nice for one handed play, though. Like if I'm eating a cheeseburger hot pocket, kind of like right now, and I wanna move at the same time.

Well this is a first!

Have you tried both 1st and 3rd person views? (Change with V key).
Also, try to tinker with your game resolution. Do you both suffer from motion/sea sickness normally? There's OTC medication for that.

Also, try just looking away from the screen for a few mins after whatever intervals you might need. Do you wear glasses? Or need them?

I hate how they took away the continuous movement of the mouse camera, so now, a lot of the time, I'm forced to use IJKL for camera controls.

Also, if you auto-run, the camera stays behind you. I'm using it almost all the times I walk forwards, now.

1st person view in FFXIV is actually where I think the controls are wonky. It is weird as all **** trying to move around in first person.

ROFL!

Side effect of old age? Possibly. But my doc says that I am too young for Depends, and makes me stop playing games to use the potty, so maybe not. :P

Mikhalia, maybe that is it. Just talked to a friend from FFXI on the same server, and he seems to feel the same way as we do.

BRizzl3, I don't know. I cannot describe it, but the whole thing feels so...loose. I WAS getting better with the keyboard/mouse, but it was still not what you would consider desirable gameplay. And now I want a Hot Pocket.

Osarion, I think that game resolution is where we might go next, thx. And no, neither of us suffer from motion sickness (or MMORPG sickness for that matter). I wish I could describe this better...sigh...

And we are using third person, maybe 1st person will be better?

I hope for your sake they add some more camera options. For my sake too I guess, since my wife doesn't really think the controls/camera are the greatest either.

I really don't understand why they didn't include a chase cam this time around. I've gotten used to going without one (use keys to move while using mouse to change camera angle), but I'd prefer just having the camera default behind me no matter where I turn. I know first-person has a chase cam, but I can't stand playing games in that view.

Turn off physics
Force V-sync on if you are able to in your graphic card control pannel
Take a 10 min. break every hour
Turn off extra options in ffxiv, like ambient occlusion, depth etc.
Turn off the dust thingy... I forget the name.
Basically kill anything that is causing extra graphic motions in game and see if it helps.

That's all I got.

I honestly haven't had any problems like this. I really don't like having to use a mouse so up until today I had been using a game pad. Today I gave this a try and I'm liking it a lot. I partial to using only the keyboard thanks to so many years with FFXI. I find it easier to control the camera and movement with the same hand.

Just tried it again (made no changes yet) to see if I was merely being a wuss...but no, I bounced around like a ping-pong ball with a furry face. My character needs a Xanax, I think.

Oh, and the Onion Helm is crazy ridiculous looking...

I want to clarify that I am NOT a stranger to MMORPG's. I have been in FFXI for 6 years, played WoW for a bit, and have never had this kind of issue. Not bagging on the game, no I am not! I just need my movements to slow down a bit before I resort to meth to keep up with myself! Maybe alcohol is the answer...

If your char is moving too fast, try hitting X to go into walk mode.

Already tried walk...I just bounce about in slo-mo. But yes, that is a bit better.

At the risk of sounding .. well, stupid, is your mouse simply turning you too fast?

I am also not a tech guru, but while there is no direct mouse control that I saw in the FFXIV controls, maybe part of the motion sickness problem that your camera is turning too fast for you, ie, the mouse is too sensitive. Perhaps a look into the Control Panel could be an answer to dial down how fast your mouse reacts.

I've never gotten motion sick from ffxi, but I do when playing FPSs. In 14, when you use the mouse to move the camera it switches it over into sort of a chase cam, which actually does get me a little sick. I'd pretty strongly recommend getting used to ijkl for controlling it instead (or the arrow keys if they ever get around to letting you map it to those to match ffxi).

I've been playing ffxi for years by moving with my left hand on wsad and simultaneously moving the camera with my right on the arrow keys, and it seems to work equally well without causing any motion sickness for me in ffxiv.

I know what the OP is talking about. This game has given me severe headaches already. It has been worse around areas with flowers out near Limsa Lominsa for me.

Could someone post a FRAPS video by any chance? To see if it is normal behavior or not? Or have you looked at other videos of gameplay, and is it similar to yours?

My wife constantly has this problem from games. The camera motions and the terrain whizzing by makes her get a headache and almost motion sick. The fixes seem to be sit a little further back from the monitor so you have the edges in view and see if that helps keep your eyes from sucking into the motion. Also My wife played the game on a resolution a notch down from her monitor resolution so that the desktop is visible. apparently it is annoying at fist but she gets used to it and doesn't get sick.

You know I get motion sickness a lot from FPS games so I can kind of understand what you're going through. I'm sure you've already set the camera to a far out view and zoomed out with the page down key/Numlock 3 key.

The camera is actually quite further out than when I started Beta 1.

Got it somewhat figured out, thanks to y'all. Went into config and brought the graphics down as far as we could take em on everything (thanks Parsalyn!). The game isn't quite as stunning, but it is still quite nice, and what's better, we can move about without Dramamine.

Thanks for the help!

I have noticed that the game seems hypersentitive to camera movements and undersensitive to combat play.... I overcompensate a lot with my camera too I just figured it would be something I learned to deal with.

My partner gets motion sickness so he figured out how to change the key binds to make it easier for him.

Change the key binds for A and D to be move camera left and right instead of move left and right. Hold down W to run forward and use A and D to just change the camera. Since you run the direction the camera is facing you turn. It makes the camera more stable.

The biggest issue is autorun since you dont run in the direction the camera turns. So use Q and E to move left and right when autorunning, they should already be keybound to strafe.

Hope this helps.
