I love this game so far, the changes they made to crafting, the journal that ushered out XI's era of "Somewhere, someone-perhaps wearing pants- will give you your next cutscene, maybe" questing, the new job systems, the quest exp/rewards, etc. I could go on till I ran out of room to post.
That being said, how could something so right, have such terrible failures in key areas of the game design?

The first being the search tool. It is just awful. There really wasn't anyting wrong with XI's search interface. It was stellar, could have used a way to search on more than one job - but it was **** good. XIV's is incredibly useless at the present time. It was like SE took 10 steps backwards in the design. I just don't get it.

The second being my biggest gripe - no Auction House.
There is nothing more frustrating in this game, than trying to randomly search through 50 bazaars that aren't even all loaded on the screen, for the one item you may be looking for. It feels like someone rounded up all the bazaars in Upper Jeuno and threw them in a holding cell. It's awful. I can't imagine anyone on the dev team saw this in Beta and thought "This WAS a good idea". Coupled with the fact it takes a fair amount of time to set up your retainer bazaar, no one wants to waste time throwing low priced materials in their Bazaars, so good luck finding anything to make actual useful or sellable items. The stuff is all being NPCed, and who can blame anyone for doing that? It's more convenient, and you really don't have a lot of bazaar space on your retainer to waste on moku grass and dodo feathers.
The current system needs to be reworked, and if the AH mechanics are already in the game, then it needs to be unlocked.

Agreed totally.

Search and AH. Pls add those in ASAP. :(

But for the AH part, problem is they didn't design FFXIV with AH in mind in the first place.

So.. that could take a while.

well, it is only the first few days after pre-launch. i don't have the link, but you should go read what FFXI was like when it came out in japan. look at FFXI now, and it's a huge difference.

i am going to have to agree with you on the AH thing. as it stands now, i have no idea what the going price of anything is, so i'm just holding my gil for now. the idea behind a retainer isn't bad though. it's nice not having to bazaar things myself like in ffXI.

to solve the current problem of not buying things for now, i'm going to look into crafting my own stuff until the going rates for things has been set in place.

I just got finished with my first foray into the Market Wards. What did I get? A decent deal on Moko Grass and a pounding headache.

I just have to chuckle about this. When will they ever add it...

Months ago it was "It's only Closed Beta, they will add it at release."

A few weeks ago "Come on, give them a break its only Beta, sure the beta is only for server load don't worry."

Now its "The game is only on its first week, give them a bit."

Next month it will be "Give them awhile its only been a month, they will add it trust me."

ahhh! when will it stop! Yea I know its a MMO and they all are like this in the beginning. At least Star Trek Online had an AH when it was released. (OMG! that game was an abomination when it came out!)

They've specifically said they don't intend to add an auction house anytime soon, so I wouldn't hold my breath. The search function really does need an overhaul... but the biggest thing you all seem to be forgetting... Locked arrow key function... give me back my camera controls through arrow keys!

There were a few things that SE did right back in FF11 and totally fragged up in this game :P

Arrow key camera control
Chat system
Search Function

Granted...some of the these weren't top notch, but at less they were functional back in ff11. Like the chat system, who in the right mind will give you a tiny little chat box that will miss 1/2 of the stuff that pops on it. The only way to see it is scroll up with your mouse :P What's wrong with hit the "+" key enter and expand the chat window? Someone else already covered the search function so I'm not going to elaborate it much. It is nice to able to search out someone you know (but not in your flist) without doing the search on every single class :P

I know this is not the same game, but there is nothing wrong with using what was working. It is one thing if they can come up with something even better, but it is another if they totally butchered it :P And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that those function are next to useless in 14 :P

i would like to add the lack of complete kaymapping >< am i only only one who would much rather have the "spacc" and "enter" functions swapped arround? I play with a keyboard/mouse so for example if im fighting two enemies at a time, after one dies, i can tab to target the next one, but then need to either click or hit enter to re-engage the next enemy. whyyy oh whyy can i not switch the functions of these two keys, would it really be that difficult for them to enable that???

hmmm im sure there is a program/technique availible somewhere that would allow me to temporarily swap the two keys on my keyboard for while im playing ffxiv... any know of something like this!?

Two things I wish I had that aren't mentioned (*deadhorse AH topic*):

1. Customizeable chat colors. The purple is hard for me to read sometimes/all the time, and differentiating between different chats is hard for me without greater color differences.

2. Customizeable chat "tabs". I'd like to be able to create chat window tabs for different chat modes. Just being able to split my tells into its own separate tab would be helpful.

I never tried it in the game...do the F keys do anything? I remember I used to use them to target party members and target.

Hey, if SE doesn't want to use an AH for commerce, good for them for trying something new and different, but this system doesn't work. It's basically no system at all. Shoving all the bazaars into an instanced area is lazy design, and really gives the impression they didn't even try to design anything, period.

I just am a bit confused as to how this made it to the commercial release. Did no one on the Dev team try it out? I know the Beta feedback was there (as to it not being a good system). I can't believe anyone that was part of testing spent anytime at all feeling that part of the game out and thought "yup this works great!" Same thing can be said of testing the search functions out, it's almost like it wasn't even given a second glance. Just code and implement, all done!

I suppose I'm a bit frustrated because not only are those two issues (search and commerce) bothersome, but I've had two friends already stop playing, stating they'd come back when things were a bit more intuitive. Personally I thought it was a bit soon to pass that final of a judgement, but that's my opinion. I played XI from release, and I understand the process of fine tuning the first six months or so, but these were pretty big fails, on pretty key parts of the game, parts they had already got right once, which makes it even more boggling.

I agree about the AH. I checked the weapon store this morning and he was selling an Iron Shortsword for $120000 gil. I was shocked. I just checked again and it was over 400000. WTF? How are prices at vendors getting so high? This economy is just confusing so far. The AH was fine in XI, a nice organized way of searching for what you are looking for.

I think the battle system is bit complicated as well. Push one button to get into active mode, then pust another button to target the mob and attack. And then keep pushing the button to attack. Is there an auto-battle like in XI? I'm also missing the battle menus. It made things easier.

Also, I think the chat window is too small. I forget it is there most of the time. I don't want to miss /tells or things I want to see.

I agree there needs to be some sort of search function. I dont mind there not being an Auction House however, I think they should implement a browse on the go feature. Idk how many times Ive had to chase someone from mob to mob telling them hey if you stop a sec ill repair your gear or "hey im trying to sell you those wind shards" crap. I figure just allow me to move or /follow while I browse so that I can make the necessary transactions.

Off topic: Positive note I simply adore this game I love the fact that everything my char is wearing I made with my own hands. Hempen shirt with hempen tights and sheepskin jackboots,, sheepskin vambraces, and hempen turban. Not the best but its mine. No onion helm due to registering that code before i registered my retail version of ffxiv so its on my open beta account which is now cancelled nice going SE. No armbands because the code doesnt fit on the add a service spaces. At this point I dont care cuz Im not starting over just for those silly looking but fun items.

As it stands im only a marauder rank 11 but I think ill lvl pug to about 6 for second wind as healing becomes an issue due to bloodbath + ws whiffing too much. I put most of my stats into dex but it is still a missga fest.

I don't mind no AH either, but the Market Ward is completely BROKEN.

Just give us some meaningful search interface to the Ward, don't teleport us in there to wander for hours on end without finding anything but someone's useless garbage.

I really enjoy FFXIV, but my god I keep running into things that make me scratch my head in confusion. Just playing around I notice (and correct me if I'm wrong on any of these):
You can't see party members on your map (at least I couldn't). Where are they? No clue unless they tell you.

If you are looking in your linkshell member list and select a member......nothing happens. In FFXI it would give you an option to send them a tell (which would be handy here because you have to type out two often long and ridiculous names to initiate a tell) and also show you where they are in the world. Right now you have no idea where the other shell members are located unless you ask.

They put in tabs in FFXI that you could tab through and see what had been said in Linkshell, party, say, shout, etc. Did they forget about how they made that game?

I still enjoy playing it despite these flaws, but I wish they would wake up and throw in some basic functionality in the near future.

The feedback was there but they either didn't take any notice or haven't had the time to get it fixed yet.

I have seen a few people from my linkshell come to the same conclusion, problem with this is that for many once they leave the chances of coming back is less likely.

SE should have moved the release date back a bit and made sure they had these things in place, they risk of alienating people, I played FF11 for 6 years and even im scratching my head at the retainers mess.

I'm guna give to the end of my free month until I decided on if im guna stay or not and I'm sure im not the only one, so they better sort it out or lose a lot of would be customers.
