I'm not talking about difficulty either. I'm talking about the way it is set up. In order to get gear, you have to either buy it from another player, or craft it.

If you go to the market wards, you can spend hours looking through retainers that are selling nothing but drops from level 1 mobs. You can shout for hours looking for the supplies you need to craft it, or the item itself, but it's doubtful you'll find it/them.

Lets take a look at my character. He's a gladiator. All I want to do is level him up, and do the story missions. At rank 14, I can't effectively level any further with my level 1 equipment.

The market wards and trying to trade for armor and weapons fails me, and wastes an enormous amount of time. I am therefore forced to take up blacksmithing and armoring. Let's just start by trying to make a rank 6 gladiator sword.

Okay so to do that, I need to be a rank 6 blacksmith. No problem, went and leveled that up. Okay, so where do I get the supplies to make the sword? Well, I need to make a blade that requires me to be a rank 11 blacksmith to make. How does that make sense? On top of that, I need several items that can only be made by other professions. Since I can't effectively search the market wards, I would be forced to level those other professions all by myself.

I am starting to become very discouraged with how I'm going to progress in this game. The entire game seems to center around a great deal of trading and bartering with other players, but at the same time the game makes that extremely difficult, with the poorly designed market ward, no mail system, and no zone-wide chat. I'm very frustrated, and considering canceling my subscription at the end of the month and waiting until some changes are made to the system.

I think S-E's business model is to throw out a PC release and work out all the bugs in a 'paid' beta, up until their real release is scheduled, the ps3 one.

They'll have these things sorted by ps3 release, no doubt. The issue is: do you want to frustrate yourself with an unfinished game over the next few months, or just roll with the punches?

I wouldn't expect any sort of meaningful economy until an auction house--or a viable alternative--is introduced.

Thats my theory also.

I'll probably just take a few hours a day to level up crafting/gathering while exponentially leveling each melee class/possibly a mage. Like getting all of my classes to 10, then to 12, 14, and so on. Then take the game seriously when the ps3 version comes out.

I didn't realize this game was going to be so heavily reliant on crafting. I don't mind leveling a craft or 2 from time to time ,but this game seems like your going to NEED to level most crafts at least till an action house comes along. I'd rather not spend half my play time crafting gear so I can do what I log on for >>>killing stuff. I don't think it would ruin the game if gear was available from an NPC at level 7-10 then some more at level 15 or so. Like I said ,I don't mind crafting a little here an there, but if I wanted to do as much as is needed for this game I'd have gotten into Scrapbooking instead of mmo's.

there is way too much emphasis on crafting. I got my lancer to 10, and now I'm trying to make a harpoon since I'm woodworking and goldsmithing anyways. I've so far been able to come up with 3/5 components, and I'm stuck because I cant find an alchemist who has made linseed oil, or will sell fish oil for a reasonable price. The few people who have made harpoons are selling them for 80k, roughly 4x the mats cost. at this point, I'm actually considering taking my 8 local leves tomorrow and leveling alchemy high enough to make the crap myself, because after a few hours in each cities bazaars, I haven't seen anything.

in short, its way too hard to make low level stuff, and the lack of an AH only makes it worse.

Sadly this pretty much my feelings as well. The reliance on every other craft to make just something simple like a scepter or dagger astounds me. I have pretty much been straight crafting because I need gear but at the same time the only craft I don't have some kind of level in is cooking. After doing so many crafts my inventory is a cluster $*@% and I would sell my first born for a sort option. Unfortunately there is just so much currently wrong its going to be quite a few patches before this game gets straightened out.

I really do not like to ***** because it solves nothing but I'm at the point where I just don't want to play because of constant craft craft craft ;_;. Perhaps I will come back in a few weeks/months and things will be better.

You know within a few weeks it'll be too easy to make low level stuff, and the high level gear will be too hard to find.
All JP MMO's require a lot of dedication, this game is about what i would expect. I do think an auction house or at the very least a delivery box would be a good addition, but i love the game so far.

I played through the OB and have the collector's edition sealed sitting on my desk. I have decided to keep myself busy with other things until a few of these issues get ironed out. I am hoping that the large multiple gig patch that is supposedly coming out on the 30th will have many of our desired changes. I desperately want to like this game. They just need to improve it in many areas. The sad thing is most of the things people are upset with concerns basic functionality. Borrow from MMO games on the current market that get things right and then blend it into your own style. I can honestly say that with the economy system as is I do not want to play. I bought a PS3, new PC, and the collectors edition specifically to play this game, if that tells you how badly I want to like it. I've just made a conscious decision not to play it right now because I don't want to become bitter on this game. It will get better, there is no doubt in that. However, I do question SE's decision to prematurely release what should have been an absolute masterpiece.

I think there's so many flaws and retarded systems in this game it makes it almost unplayable. The crafting system is BUILT specifically to take advantage of a auction house. Crafters help each other level their crafts with various goods. The economy could stabilize and mature in a very positive manner with a auction house. Crafting would suddenly be a lot better and crafters would be less frustrated, they would also be able to actually sell their stuff to the people who need it.

I spent 1 hour last night then 1 hour today, 2 freaking hours looking through just ONE of the many market wards trying to find some things I needed to be able to craft with, and did not find any. Enormous waste of time, but honestly I'm beginning to think this is Square Enix's plan all along. They are TRYING to waste our time so we don't make too much progress. But what they are doing is making the game unplayable.

I've been trying for days now simply to make a pair of low level shoes (sheepskin caligae) to match my other sheepskin armor, to level gladiator but cannot find the proper ingredients and for some reason these low level sheepskin caligae require ingredients from a level 20+ armorsmith... Why? Why were the other pieces of sheepskin armor "relatively" easier to make (I made them all in a couple of days) but it's impossible to make the matching shoes? Why do that to people?

There's also a lot of stupid things like not being able to Invite/Kick/Promote/Exile people from your linkshell unless you are standing RIGHT by them. The fact that you have to some times search multiple market wards to find what you're looking for or the need to go to several different cities to get crafting materials from NPC's, this is all on a limited amount of Anima that runs out quickly and restores itself slowly. Then there's smaller things like the text chat window erasing what you say if you do **** near anything and the inability to control the transparency of the window itself making text really aggravating to read unless you highlight the window.

I wouldn't say the game is too "hard" rather right now it's too "stupid". There's too many stupid things that just shouldn't be how they are, especially for a official release version. I'm not talking little bugs or minor things but MAJOR things really holding people back, wasting their time, and making the game unenjoyable. I'm beginning to really dislike Square Enix and their attitude on it all.

I would agree with the above posters there is definately room for improvement. I do however like to craft and to be honest Im crafting for myself because I wanted to have the satisfaction of making my own stuff. I agree peeps are too greedy selling things for even 20k is a bit much at this point. I refuse to be gouged since gil isnt that abundant once you completed the 2 main quests thus far. I dont wanna waste my guildleve gil on one item.

So I wont complain Im just going to make it all myself. I think most mats except for those pesky dye moss that is holding me back. I so want to make a sheepskin harness to go with my sheepskin gear but silly dye is hard to find. Also cant wait until i can successfully make my own shards.

Im rolling with the punches until SE tightens things up and gets them running smoothly.

Overall Im loving this game. I love FFxi but the randomness of most of its rewards **** me off too much. Im talking about you AF3 seals. >< stupid quests...... anyway if anyone is on Raubanastre and needs gear if i can make it or if you supply the mats I will gladly make things for you for free. I also hate how they double npc price on every material. It made self repair equipment stupid sicne for example, marauder, the axe require 2 x bronze nugget to repair, npc sell the nugget for 1200 each, for a total fo 2400 while the weapon is around 1.4k... WTH. They remove undyed convas from npc in Uldah, which made serveral weapon or crafting tools impossible to made atm.

The pitfalls of playing an MMO from day one. I've personally waited for first expansion to release before I've gotten into most of them to have to deal with as few bugs as possible. I would have made this my first day one, but my PC can't handle it (funny, when XI came out my PC then couldn't either *shakes fist*). But you guys with your CE's are gutsy I must say.. that's a lot of cash for something that could potentially **** you off to the point of quitting temporarily only get caught up in a new game.

I'm sure either an AH or a bazaar search will appear in the months to come. Item sort seems like an oversight on the programming end, I'm sure that will be addressed as well. Along with the plethora of other irritants I'm reading about.

Was going to say the exact same thing pretty much. You guys really need to understand that all the stuff going on is par for the course, as far as MMO launches go. If you've never been there for one (FFXI doesn't count unless you did JP launch), you're learning the hard way with XIV. Have patience and don't expect everything to be there from the start. Cause it don't work like that.

You'd think that, eh? And I'd agree. But even XI didn't have an AH at JP launch. Give it some time guys, this is a pain, yeah, but it's really how MMO launches go for the most part.

We've all been spoiled by XI and WoW and EQ1/2 etc etc, which have all been out in the range of almost a decade -/+, and are pretty well polished games.

But that's it right there man. Freaking lessons learned. Saying well FFXI didn't have an AH at launch so why should this is no excuse. SE is not learning from their mistakes, they're making the same mistakes and adding more on top of the old ones.

Epic stupidity.

As SE said, this game was made especially for players who work during the day.
Yet...
When I was playing the beta, I felt like "Hey this is no different from work!". I tell ya, that even the leveling up was slow. The abilities require too much "effort" and "boredom" to improve. If we let the exp points be our wage, we are a bit unpaid aren't we?

Typically, the game is: to get this, you need that, to get that you need those, to get those you must do this, to become this you must fight that, to fight that... you need a better weapon which is what you wanted at first. It's way too long and tedious. To achieve that slow, you're gonna pay a year of time! Not so worth the time lol.

I'm sorry but this simply isn't true. If you were part of closed beta then you were doing it wrong. They had feedback forums on the beta site during phases 1, 2 and 3 of closed beta.

I agree that there are plenty of things that should be here already but I don't mind giving SE some time to get it sorted. I'm in this game for the long haul, not just for the first couple of months. Anyone saying the game is 'unplayable' or even 'almost unplayable' is just being a drama queen.

Plus, let's face it... Nobody who was following the game's progress really expected the game to be released in September. They pushed the game out the door early for whatever reasons SE might have had.

As far as the AH goes, they did specifically say they didn't want to go that route (in the past). Although now it looks like they're looking into *some* sort of search system, which would be great.

Take a look in the wards. In the middle areas, there's readerboard type thing. I have a hunch that's what's going to be used to search each individual ward. But that's just my theory.

Yeah I wouldn't say it's too hard or unplayable. It's just a bit difficult right now because you nearly have to level every DoH yourself in order to get decent gear for you DoW/DoM. But I'm also more than willing to give them some time. I'm enjoying the game so far. I think an AH would alleviate a bit of this.

I'd love to see them implement an AH in the next few weeks, just to see how many of these kinds of threads would disappear if nothing else.

Edit: Pesky grammar, always getting the better of me.

I've hit a dreadful wall with my crafting. Anything listed as requiring a rank of 11 or higher is destroying me with DoH classes at rank 11. Blacksmithing? KABOOM! Armorsmith? KABOOM! I got the idea in my head that I probably need to upgrade my tools, so I set about figuring out how best to do that. I agree with people here that the interdependence can get a bit tedious at times. I blow up a ton of bronze to get the heads made for the tool in question, then I look at the handle. After blowing up a bunch of logs I can make the handle easily. Then I look at the other components...canvas cloth. Really? So now I'm heading back to Black Brush with about 300 Hempen Yarn to convert into cloth so that I can reach Rank 10 weaver (I won't need all 300, but ya), at which point I can count on blowing up an awful lot of lightning crystals/cotton bolls making the cotton yarn and then the canvas.

All in all, it's a process, but you know what irritates me more than anything else? The laggy/glitchy UI. It's horrible. Bad enough it's geared for gamepad and not keyboard/mouse, but I find that with the keyboard it bounces all over the place. I tap page down a couple of times to scroll down a list and it goes down two pages worth and then bounces back to the top. I enter a material into a crafting box and it disappears back into my inventory. I select one item and the one below it on the list is the one that ends up in the box.

All that aside, here's a little bit of what I've been doing lately...

I did finally manage to make a shield for my gladiator today...and three extras to bazaar. I also blasted through a surplus of bone chips and made enough animal glue to last me a year. Beeswax? I got it, man. And beehive chips to spare, too. Right next to the four stacks of distilled water. I sell things like feathers and branches to vendors because they're common enough that by the time I need them (if I ever need them) I can go get more. Oh, and things only used by Culinarians get pitched or passed on to an NPC. Cooking will be the last DoH class I rank up, right alongside fishing. Everything else gets tucked away until I have to use it or risk running out of space. I've got bronze heads for a doming hammer, cross-pein hammer, birdsbeak hammer and pickaxe waiting for final components. I've got lumber, planks, spetches, straps, nuggets, ingots, squares, plates, and a ton of miscellaneous raw materials. I just started in on grade 2 mining and botany stuff, too.

And the thing is, if you exclude the gil I spent on Muddy Water to get my alchemy started and blasted through to rank 10, I am not kidding or exaggerating when I say I've spent zero gold on my crafting. I don't buy materials. I gather them. I stockpile them, and then I use them. I can already see that beyond rank 10, it's going to get more and more difficult to manage everything. I'm looking forward to when SE adds the option to hire more retainers ;D

I don't have a DoW/DoM class beyond rank 10. I've got 3 at rank 10 that I leveled for abilities to equip on my gladiator and I'm already seeing the benefits. My physical level is 22 (probably be 23 by the time I'm done my crafting stint >.<) and between borrowed abilities from other classes + the stats from my physical level, my pugiilist was an absolute juggernaut shredding red shield dodos at rank 8. Up to 400 rank points/fight, all in starter gear.

You guys are trying to rush it. Just what do you think is going to be waiting for you at the cap, anyway? Take time out and build a balanced character. Don't rely on the market system for anything. If you don't like it, don't use it until SE adds something more convenient. You don't need to buy stuff from other players.

We're still learning what level these synths are. SE only listed ranges (1-10, 11-20 etc), not specific skill levels. So we put in 11 as a temporary placeholder for the 11-20 range, and also to mark it's tier.

Once people start learning the actual skill levels, we'll update them to reflect that and not just their general range.

It was either that, or just have a huge jumbled mess of recipes which give no hint as to their even general range.

I totally agree with this. I've spent the last few days levelling my Gladiator, Conjurer and Pugilist to rank (as well as Blacksmith and Mining). As a result, I have Second Wind and Cure on my Gladiator. I feel like such an uber tank, can't wait to get Provoke then we''l see who wants to mess with me! *Aggressive Face*.

Its fine - you just have to do what i did.

Level all crafts and gathering jobs to level 10. THen you can make a bunch of gear to wear.

Problem is you would long ago have run out of space and then you wont be able to sell what you have made because there is no AH. Two massive issues in the game. (1) No AH, (2) cant mail to alts or get more than one retainer.

I did expect this - when SE made the crafting jobs as alternatives to actually fighting, it was obvious that they intended a full on in game economy.

I agree that having a search function in the Bazaar or implementing an Auction House would make things easier. But, there is another option. Join a good Linkshell. That way you are able to craft things / get things crafted for you / get armor repaired etc ^^

(or that could be too obvious a solution :P )

It's safe to say SE knows we want an AH system, they havent said there wont be one flat out. But for crying out loud, what do you expect? They can't just magic one up overnight, it takes a alot of work and resources, which are overwise being focused on making a smooth launch possible. It would have been too big to impliment in the Beta, would you rather they added that and just left the Menu's crappy and laggy like they used to be instead?

No offense intended, but after five years of development, this shouldn't be something that needs built from the ground up. This should have been there.

I don't buy that argument though. Just because they've made bad choices in the past doesn't give them a pass for making them again in new games.
