This P.O.S. chat system makes Ventrillo or other VOIP communication almost necessary.

You can't say anything important during a battle without it getting erased.

I find it very irritating. Its like twitter, only worse. Really, 140 characters is enough to write around 12-14 words which is probably the average length of a sentance? That's assuming the average word length is 8-10 characters. So even if you use particularly large, verbose or wordy language, your letters should fit.

However, if you are using only 85 characters like Square Enix rediculously decided upon that would be 8-10 words which quite often is fewer then the number of words necessary to complete a sentance. So you frequently need 2-3 seperate messages to send 1 message which sadly includes retyping /tell name two to three times. Its not so bad with the Control+R if you have already messaged someone once but if oyu have conversations with 2-3 different people, it just gets awful.

Can't square enix get anything right besides nice looking graphics? Even the chat system is sub-par at best. I wish we'd have better filtering options for general-chat so you can actually see /tells and /cm l before it gets blasted away by battle text.

Having never used Twitter, I have little to base it off. Still, the vanishing chats are maddening, and the bite-sized morsels we're allowed to divulge have to be typed in an equally fast pace so as not to be erased by the slightest upcoming action. No mean feat when the chat interface lags so often. There are significant improvements that need to be made to the UI in general to help a lot of people.

This game is a lot of fun (really!) but it needs a mountain-load of QOL improvements to let us actually PLAY rather than constantly battling the UI.

I still haven't heard any indication that they plan to increase the amount of characters allowed.

The fix to chat while crafting or bazaaring was most welcome though!

This chat system never ceases to annoy me. Every time I get on I'll have a message get cut off before I send it. It has been a while since I played FFXI, but couldn't you type more on it than on FFXIV? It blows me away that you can't really put on any filters. On FFXI you could separate all the types of chat messages. I would look at all the tells I received in FFXI. Making it really easy to remember what someone said to me. I try to scroll through on FFXIV and every time I receive a message it will move down some. Making it take even longer to find that one message I'm looking for.

I'm pretty dang sure I remember SE saying that we can give our friends a nickname. So, all we have to do is type the nickname and we can talk to them personally. I haven't figured out how to do that and I don't even think its possible to do. I do like the game and I understand it is new. That's why I'm still playing the game, giving them a chance to work on these issues. But, it just seems that some of these problems are ridiculous.

Sometimes I feel that they are just trying to be different from FFXI and other MMO's just for the sake of being unique. I personally really liked the chat system in FFXI. Played other mmo's and didn't like the chat system as much. In wow I had to put in addons to set it up just right. Loved the fact that the chat bar was down on the bottom and it was really easy for me to read. I really don't like it being off to the side, but that's just me. Now I'm going into a rant, oh well lol.

It's extremely obnoxious. I guess in their defense, there hasn't been much incentive to communicate with other players if you're just trying to progress. Even if you do join a party, there's not a lot of teamwork required.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Maybe it's just my PC, but the Ctrl+R doesn't work on the "first" /tell received from someone. I have to type /tell "name" to respond first, then I can use Ctrl+R all day long for that person. Dunno coming from FF11, the chat feature here seems a bit more clunky to me.

Yes, that's right. That's how it works. You always have to type their name first in order to use the CTRL-R feature afterwards and if I'm not mistaken, the CTRL-R function doesn't work unless they've also sent you a /tell.

No, pretty much just have to manually type in their name and send them a tell first before the game "allows" you to use Ctrl+R and save yourself some time. Whether or not they respond has no bearing on the Ctrl+R functionality.

They did the exact same thing back in XI as well. I was kinda hoping they would allow more room to type out what you need but they took the same route again. I'm used to it by now though...

What an irony...

for a game that wants to encourage player interaction and community with other means... there is a crippling limit to what you can say.

/tell Res -> [TAB] will pop up a list of names and will allow the "auto-translate" to pick ResidentLune

I know it's no Ctrl-R, but it is the next best thing for now.

Well I have to admit that its really made me re-think and re-structure every thing I say in game. Its like a thesaurus based mini game whenever I speak (and I'm use to being long winded)
In FFXIV speak thats: I often amend my dialogue in game.

I worry people assume I'm being curt with them though...

What's the opposite of Christopher Walken?

Christopher Reeve.

To me, the chat limitation is the worst problem I have with the game currently.

Most of my sentences are extended and I have the tendency to run them on and on and on until they cover about the size of a standard paragraph. That and I like to tell stories a lot to people and they can go on for quite awhile...

Getting cut off by the limit is like someone slapping my *****. It stops me for a moment before I can continue. So many distractions...

I got used to the limited character limit. I think some people are just QQing over this (that guy who said ventrillo was a must).

I honestly don't even notice it anymore, the other day I was wondering if they had changed it since I wasn't feeling the limit.

I do think that the low character limit is having a negative effect on the community's general socialization though. Instead of greeting people in a grand way like I used to in XI I usually limit myself to "hey" "hi" on XIV.

In some games, you can click on a persons name in the chat window, and send them a tell, or party invite.

But, SE likes to do things their way, and don't care if other games do things right.

They also have yet to talk about changes to the auto translate. I have to find a way to do the following:

experience point party R30+ do you need it? menu party search join
