I know I will most likely get a few slams from this post, and most likely a few name callers, but I feel the need to voice my opinion about this game, I have my flame retardant armor on ;)

First of all, my fiancee is a rabid fan of FF, having played FFXI for years, and now playing this one. I have always loved gaming.. played many different things off and on over the years, and I was excited to share his enthusiasm over this game. I started with FFXI, poked around a bit, but life changed and I didn't really have the time to play.. on to now..

I have to say entering this game as a new player with no real FF experience at all is near impossible! I found it to be extremely un welcoming in general with not even the slightest hint as to how to accomplish the simplest tasks including walking! I, having played other games in the past, managed to work out the basics but beyond that I am lost.. without my fiancee sitting over my shoulder explaining the command keys etc, I would have lost interest in the first few minutes of play!

I am aware of the minimal guides put out by SE, and have read through a few of them.. but herein lies the next problem.. every stinking time I decide I might be judging unfairly, and decide to give it one more chance.. there is some type of emergency maintenance, the server is down for whatever reason.. this can of course be pinned on this being a new game and them working out the bugs but I distinctly remember all the down time my fiancee had with FFXI as well!

To end my vent, I believe FF has a strong enough fan base to survive for many years more.. I agree, this is an amazing game graphically, and possibly even in play.. I wouldn't know as I haven't had the patience to bother. However, I believe SE is missing a huge chunk of new player income from people like me who come into the game with an open mind, only to be frustrated and shut out by the lack of direction and ability to interact. Just had to get that out there. On a good note, I do appreciate and admire those of you who love the game, and make it what it is with all your hard work!

If walking is hard for you in games, you shouldn't be playing a MMORPG. Hopefully it's not hard for you in real life too.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind. Nothing wrong with that.

:) thanks for the comment xthunderblazex.. I'm sure most people reading understood that my point in saying that wasn't that I was unable to walk, but that a very new player to any game may not know. Sorry, didn't mean to confuse you! I can see where my statement would be misleading to some.

Thank you :) I'm really trying to not judge it completely yet.. just had to whine about it a bit ;) the story and theme are alot of fun actually, and I love some of the more adult oriented npc's!

I have never played FFXI and I got into this game really quick in Open Beta, figuring out stuff by myself. Have to disagree with you though, there are quite a lot of people who find the general lack of direction a good thing, as RPGs like Morrowind/Oblivion or Fallout generally just give you one hit of the main story and left you in a big and free world, and many enjoy them for a reason.

I've strongly recommended to my friends NOT to adopt this one early, because they didnt play FFXI. Two of them did anyhow, and despise the UI and lack of information given. Regardless of playing mmos for the past 10+ years this isnt one you can just pick up and be able to figure out without previous FFXI experience, at least in its current state.

I'm not ready to say I love the game yet, but I'm having a lot of fun playing it, and I think that any of my friends that give it a few months will like what they see when they start. Right now, things are just hid in goofy places in the UI, some default keys are really unique to this or FFXI and the initial instruction is non-existent.

To clarify: Lack of direction is a really good thing, obfuscating controls, interactions and functionality is whats bad... The more they can push this in the direction of a sandbox the better, just do a better job explaining stuff like quest crafting mats arent in your inventory, they're associated with a leve quest where you can only see when paging through your journal, "i, j, k, l" control camera angles and map scroll, and interactions are done sometimes with the enter key and other times they appear in a separate space above the other options when navigating through the menu (which you bring up with the keypad minus key)

SE does have a game manual to show you what your keyboard does/ what the buttons do. I do agree SE is bad at showing people how do do the simple things in the game. They should have a mini walk through to show you how to attack equip actions/attacks and how to do the guild leves at the very least.
Now like you said FF does have a strong player base and i am one of them. I watched a bunch of vids so i understood what was going on and how to do it. I was also in the open beta. I have helped countless people in the game showed them the GL and explained how to equip actions/attacks. Witch can be a little tough.
