First, I'd like to mention that I'm having loads of fun playing so far... so this isn't a ***** thread. I would just like to find out if I'm missing some short cuts in this game for a ocuple of things.

First is chatting. I can't figure out how to respond to someone without having to first type out their full name. After that 'crtl'+R works, but only after I hit the spacebar to open the chat. Is there an easier way to respond to tells?

The next, perhaps bigger issues for me, is that I haven't yet figured out how to search for people. I can see friends on my friends list but I do not really get any useful options from the menu off the friends list. The /sea commands from FFXI don't work. I have no idea where someone is in the world without asking them.

Is there any type of grid or coordinate system for maps/navigation? It was conveneient in ffxi to tell someone that "I'm at <pos>"

Equipping new gear is clumsy as well. There's still excessive menu lag that makes is a pain to simply change to a crafting class on the fly. Macros take care of this, but you cna't have a macro for everything all the time. I don't like how the menus scrolle and loop back to the top when you reach the bottom of the list. Its hard not to overshoot (hehe). Also, it would be nice to be able to press right on the d-pad to page down through the lists (like ffxi).

I won't even get into the retianer issues. If they are going to stick with such a system they need to somehow make it faster to browse through the bazaars.

Anway, I hope these types of things will work themselves out fiarly quickly with a couple of updates. None of htem are deal breakers for me, but it sure would allow me to enjoy the game that much more.

Agree with everything you've said. I am having a lot of fun sofar, it's just these little niggly issues causing mild annoyance.

I really don't get why the chat system isn't just identical to XI's - I found Xi's nice to look at, and so simple to use :/ And yes to streamlining the gear changing - what happened to ctrl + e? ; ;lol

Another niggly issue though, which I'm sure has been brought up many times before, but here you go again SE - where's my inventory sort? :)

Other than the niggly issues though, having a blast!

Hm, The only thing im finding annoying, Is the fact not even in 11 was i a crafter, And by god i will not be one now. Cant find gear, And the movement is rather robotic and clunky, But then again. This is exactly how 11 was, And we all know how well that turned out...Give it a year max, Will be much better, And combat will be cleaned up

re: chatting, if you have the person on your friends list you can type out the first few letters of their first name, then hit tab, and it will fill it out from the auto-translate system.

the worst is chatting while crafting... >.>

Thanks for the tip. I agree about chatting while crafting. I was trying that last night and my tell kept getting deleted every time some synthesis action started or finished.

Another retainer problem is that if the server restarts your retainer disappears from the markets. You have to manually put them back up. This is especially irritating if you have a stand, especially in the first or second ward, because you lose the stand. These stands are hot real estate.

Stand next to an empty stand (good luck finding one), bring up your menu and you will the option "Stand" on top.

I also agree with everything the OP said.

The game really isn't ready for use in my opinion because it lacks basic stuff.
Why can't they take the existing and working things from FFXI like /r, /lsmes, /sea,...? Communication in a MMO is one of the most important things and should be easy and fast.

The biggest problem however is that annoying UI lag and design. While the UI performance will improve over time I'm affraid the design with all these menus will stay as it is.
Crafting is the worst for me so far, followed by the really unintuitive and inconvenient equipment UI.
Macros are great and work very well for changing gear or abilities but it shouldn't be the only way to do so quick and without alot of browsing through your inventory and switch between macro and inventory window because you have to check the name of the item again. By the way, why can't you sort your inventory?

Oh and please please please implement shortcuts for the most common menus like and maybe even for the different chat modes.

Also harvesting and quarrying is a joke. Why can't it be just like mining or logging so you can try 5 times and don't have to watch your char grabbing and putting away the scythe or hammer every single time followed by opening the main menu again...
What's the point of moving the harvesting/quarrying point back and forth after each try?

Retainers are special indeed...not even going to comment on that. I've been to the markets twice now and it's nothing but a timesink or even impossible to find something you're looking for.
Also you don't have any clue how much an item is worth if you don't go to a NPC and check through initiating the sell process of an item. Would be nice if it would list the prices of all items in your inventory once you talk with the NPC and remember them until you get another price for them from another NPC.

And the most annoying thing atm is the party Exp bug for sure. This really mustn't happen in a game which encourages party play. And this bug isn't even new.
Also the enmity is still so unballanced that it would be much easier to tank as THM or CON.

The PS3 limitations for the UI are the worst thing because they prevent too many easy solutions to alot of issues.
I've tried to get people interested in FFXIV and try the open beta and give away my buddy pass but most of them quit the game after short time because of the horrible UI and game issues. And I can't even argue much.

I really want the game to succeed and I'll keep playing because I like it and I hope that SE will get things to work as planned as soon as possible because the players now are mostly FFXI veterans or FF fans in general but the players joining 30.Sep. might not be as forgiving as we are.

Agree with the OP. I too am enjoying myself however...

WHY SE did you find it necessary to get rid of these basic functions? WHY did you find it necessary to eliminate the solid basis that you had worked so hard on in FFXI? This just boggles the #$%# out of my mind.

NO it doesn't have to be a FFXI or even WoW clone, but improve on what you had. It is ironic that although most of the content (barring the retainer system) is more casual, yet the UI and bones of the system isn't.

All of this is adding to my (conspiracy/thesis) that SE wants to make it intentionally difficult in the beginning, in order to control the playerbase so that it is more "well rounded" in all aspects. Levels, economy, general progression. Which is their prerogative, however it's taking a bit of a toll, on me, in terms of fun.

Example: Why wouldn't SE incorporate a seek party flag, with a simple search system? One answer is that, it's not SE intention to play the game that way; they want people to guildleve and solo grind, or make parties through their archaic system. Another is that limiting the ease of partying, limits the alienation of solo players, and allows for a slower moving upward progression.

Through this first week I am better able to discern now between, beginning MMO growing pains, purposeful timesinks, and just flat out bad design. Some things are excusable and some aren't. For the things that aren't I will complain and hope SE doesn't change things because I and others are the loudest, but rather because we are many.

I'm still liking the game and there are MANY improvements from FFXI, especially in terms of casual play. But that's what makes some of these omissions/inconsistencies frustrating. And from that my interest is dwindling. Unlike some, I AM still willing to give FFXIV a chance. I want it to succeed as another poster stated, but the only way to do that is to NOT spare the rod.

I just noticed another thing I'm missing.

Mail...

I can't send an item from one city to another? C'mon this is basic stuff too. /sigh

I played the OB, will be playing the retail version on the 30th.

About the retainer issue, if SE is not gonna make an AH for now, then maybe the least they can do is change the name of each market ward to something meaningful, such as Weapon Ward, Armor Ward and so on. That way people would know if I want to buy/sell weapons, I would go to the Weapon Ward.
