go to an empty ward, and summon him there.
The problem with that is that you can't summon your retainer unless you dismissed them from the original ward first. It took me an hour to figure that out, but it kinda makes sense. If you're trying to shop, you don't want the retainer bazaar you're shopping in to suddenly disappear because their owner summoned them.
I wonder if they can make it so that your character and your retainer take priority when loading the area. Also a "/target <retainer name>" would be nice.
Edit: Of course, this would only be if the retainer literally had to walk (don't know why SE programmed it that you can't summon an instance of your retainer anywhere). I guess they want to make the retainers realistic. Edited, Sep 27th 2010 3:42pm by VelvetJ Edited, Sep 27th 2010 3:43pm by VelvetJ
