You know; I've been reading these threads for quite some time. It brings back fond memories of the earlier FFXI rollout; all the glitches, lag, lack of mog space, people training mobs to zones and killing other players, it was crazy I tell ya!

That was THE first online game I had ever played; and admidst all the confusion of the new rollout itself; I didn't even know how to "run" using the keyboard. I didn't even know how to answer a "tell". I threw away all my beastcoins for months!!! ( I still /sigh to this day over that. ) I didn't even know how to make a macro until I hit the dunes; joined a party and was still trying to manual target people to cure by running around like a complete fool; until someone, much wiser "yelled" at me and then showed me! lol.

Everything was completely foreign to me. People were griping about this and griping about that. And you know what? It never changed! When CoP came along; all us oldies who did it the hard way; pushing through the missions and hearing that dreaded level down sound after about 9 tries on the ice king bomb thingy (not to mention the ship fight); complained when they took away the experience debt to make it easier!

Know what the BEST part of all that was? The "newness" of just literally not having to KNOW everything about every place, quest, fight. Not having to be the BEST at my job "right now". But the BEST part was and is All the great friends and people I met along the way ... many whom I still call "friend".

So you know what I'm gonna do? I'm going to throw myself back into a brand new version FFXIV; and probably bumble and stumble my way through a new world and just try to have fun. I'm plain counting on the fact that SE knows exactly what they are doing, as they have done in the past, to make our gaming experience a fun and pleasant one!

That's it -

I hope you all have a great new journey - see you around -
Fem

Everything you said, everything, was the same for me in FFXI. I had such high hopes going into XIV, wanting that 'my new home' feeling, thinking wow, I'm going to spend the next few years in this place. I expected to not understand things, or to see things that gave me a huh?? feeling, then learning it was something so basic and easily explained with a doh!!

The first time I saw the sunset with Ul'Dah in the distance was...just wow.
Fishing is a blast.
Exploring is amazing, so many cool things to see.
Nice people so far, just one or two numbskulls to balance em out.

I want FFXIV to succeed.
SE needs to read these forums tho.

Edit: I'd also really really like to know what's being said in Japanese forums.

Ditto for me. I played FFXI several times since its creation, had many chars (never got over 44 but still had lots of fun) and I can not wait to pick this up in a week or two. I've played most of the online games and none of them kept me up till 2 or 3 in the morning like FFXI did. I dread not the nay sayers for they do not know what I know! I just keep watching online vids of the beta and smiling. Nice post whispers!

Exactly the same over here.

I remember my first time spawning in Sandoria I didn't even realize I was getting into a game with thousands of other players lol I didnt even know what an MMO was I think I was only like 14.. I just knew it was the next final fantasy.

I remember making my way through west ronfaure and running back to the city after every "session" to sell items etc. It felt like home, so everytime I got farther and farther from sandoria, like near the border of la thiene and valkurm, I felt like I was out in some far away lands and jsut kept worrying about my run back to the city afterwards lol.

Almost 7 years later and all the people I played with are back together on 1 server again. It's SE's way of 'westernizing' this game that worries me though, because in the end, the difficulty of FFXI is what brought the community together. People don't realize this and the same people that met all kinds of friends and made so many memories, are often times the same people that complain about not being able to solo.

Personally I do miss the days of finding a camp, having a puller, losing exp if you mess up, all that crazy stuff you'd never find in an mmo made for today. I'm with you on giving SE the benefit of the doubt though, I'm crossing my fingers and just enjoying what we have so far.

I also want to add that it may be better I don't get that feeling again because I became seriously addicted LOL I definately faked a lot of sick days when ffxi was in my life. lol.

I miss that too, but assuming you're not Japanese and didn't start when they started FFXI, starting fresh in FFXIV vs. when the West started a year later are two completely different experiences.

By the time we started, RoZ was out and there were JP level 60's DRKs busting out Guillotines in Zi'Tah. I was in awe. FFXI was a more concrete world when we inhabited it. And depending how you look at it the ephemeral nature of FFXIV, including it's problems are both good and bad. A lot of those problems therein are just basic problems with functionality.

And from that, if you're looking for that warm fuzzy feeling you might not get it, as people like me are spoiled from FFXI and how we started out. For example there is no "Dunes" (well there is in Ul'dah, but that's different) because it hasn't been invented yet. In FFXI we had things like that to look forward to, (heck I was fighting Orcs and other Beastmen at 10, here @ rank 14 I'm still fighting marmots) but right now in FFXIV all of that is up in the air.

In addition, the community (where most of the good memories come from) is coming more alive each day, but it's the same deal; where not many people are talking because of both functional problems and general busyness.

In the end, if you want that nostalgic feeling, you may have to put in a lot more work than you did in FFXI.

I better hope SE knows what they're doing.
