Comparison needed: Radeon 5870 vs. GTX 480 in FFXIV.Follow

Let me preface this by saying I know new cards will be out "soon", but considering I just ordered every part of my new PC EXCEPT the video card... I am not going to sit around and wait for the new hardware to come to me.

I also assure you that this is NOT a troll post. I am actually wanting valid opinions and advice on both video cards.

I am NOT interested in running either in SLi/Crossfire at the moment, nor am I interested in running an older version (GTX 460/470, 5850, etc) in a standalone OR SLi/Crossfire configuration.

I have been actively for the GTX 480 for awhile, because I have seen some benchmarks and it seems to be the best you can get right now that is a single GPU.

I have not researched the Radeon 5870 (or any of the 5000 series) well enough to warrant me to go, "I think I will get a 5870 instead!" That is where you all come in.

I know it is hard to compare how well each card runs during FFXIV because everyone has different PC specs outside of the video cards, but I am curious if any of you know (or know a site) that compares the two with FFXIV being the test subject. If the site has both cards on default core clock speed (not overclocked) that would be great too.

I don't want the thread to turn into a "my card is better than yours" war... I just want to get VALID opinions and advice on the differences between each of them.

Thank you.

I would imagine the 480 would do better, but with the 60 fps cap it's going to be hard to see a difference between the two anyway.

Heh. I should have put that around $500-$550 is my max.

Plus that is technically a two GPU card, and I would think it would work like a Crossfire configuration... which I don't want right now.

GTX 480 absolutely smashes the 5870. Just look at the benchmarks.

The other thing that is relevant to some is that using SLI makes considerably better use of the second card than crossfire does so the 480 has it there as well.

The 5970 at the moment for some reason is not working as well as the 5870 - I assume this is driver related but am open to suggestions.

Can't the human eye only differentiate (distinguish) fps up to 60fps anyway?

If both can run FFXIV at 60fps, then which would run it better when you take in the settings and whatnot. Like I said before... it is hard to compare the two when it would take someone with both (like a review site) to do a side-by-side comparison while both were in the same exact PC setup.

You talking specifically for FFXIV? I thought I read somewhere that the 5970 had two GPUs and that was why it wasn't running FFXIV well. But I really don't remember where I saw that or if my mind is just numb from all of the PC stuff/specs I have been looking at for the last two weeks.

With my Evga 480sc, my frames are always 60. If there is a huge crowd 35-35. Never below 30.

I'm playing with the EVGA gtx470 and getting the same results. 60 fps in almost all areas. When there's 50 people in a camp, my frames drop to 35-45.

The only problem I really have in the game is that, generally, lalafells like to craft between my legs. If SE could solve this, I'd be a happy crafter;)
