Equipment and Optimal RankFollow

Could anybody please provide me with some carity here.

Let's say i'm a rank 1 gladiator and i've equipped a sword with an optimal rank of 7.

Do I get reduced stats to coincide with my current rank?

Does the sword degrade quicker than it would if I was rank 7?

Ultimatley, what is the benefit of being the optimal rank (or higher) as opposed to equipping an item a few ranks below?

Thanks for the assistance or apologies if i've just beaten a dead horse.

Early indications are that the stats are scaled down to your level but no one knows exactly how far yet. I haven't heard about gear above your rank breaking faster but gear well below your rank definitely breaks faster.

As far as I could tell from Beta, the closer you are to the optimal rank the more benefit you get out of the item. Instead of your level limiting what you can physically wear it just limits how much can get out of wearing something way above your current rank. Since you can wear whatever you want I suppose it's to keep people from feeding new characters end-game gear, giving them a huge advantage.

If it scales with their Rank then they would still have a slight advantage stat-wise. But at the cost of the huge repair bill since higher level gear can get quite expensive to repair.

From what I noticed, being 1 level below the item gives you 66% of the stats. I would assume that this scales down as you get further and further away from the item-level.

I assume it works like level-sync gear in XI. When you wear gear higher than your current level in XI, you get much lower stats, meaning its still worth using if you have it, but gear appropriate gear will always be at least slight better. So if you are wearing level 10 gear at 5, I would expect it to be pretty weak, by level 9 its still quite a bit worse than it is at 10, because you aren't suppose to get full benefits from it until 10. But for the sake of not having to have a bunch of excess gear taking up space, the gear below your optimal level is still "good enough" for most purposes - just not as good as optimal rank gear for your current rank.

Anyway, that's all theory and based off of XI, but I imagine it works much like that. I'd test it, but I'm too busy leveling the 6 crafts I need to take to 10+ to make my rank 7 gear....
