Starting off with a buddy passFollow

Hey all, sorry if this is an already asked question. I'm trying to try out FFXIV with a buddy pass I got from a friend. I added the code to my SE account, under "Final Fantasy XIV - Option List" it shows "FINAL FANTASY XIV - Windows(R) Sep. 26, 2010". So it looks like it had added. When I log in to the client, I can get to the first menu, and choose "Start", but then it comes up with "The proper options must be added to a FINAL FANTASY XIV service account before a character can be created. Return to the login screen and access the SE Account Management System to add Options". Is there a step I'm missing? Do I just need to wait for the retail launch, which is the 30th I believe? Thanks for any help, looking forward to trying the game :)

Go to the Square Account management page, log in and add the FFXIV service (Will have to set up a payment option for after the 30 free days).

Hope that helped :)

That did, got it set up. Now, it said it's set to bill on October 28th, but before it'd automatically rebill me, wouldn't I need to purchase the game since I just have a buddy pass? That doesn't get around me having to pay for the game itself, does it?

I just read elsewhere after a google that the buddy/guest pass is another reg code which can continue to be used after the 30 days as long as you pay - essentially another full retail code free with the CE.

Can anyone confirm/deny this?

This is extremely unlikely. A lot of folks are having high hopes for this, there is nothing in any write-up or interview that has confirmed or denied it. However, unless SE's marketing folks are just complete idiots this will not be the case. If I am proved wrong in this assumption it will be the biggest jaw drop ive had from a video game in awhile. And also alot of couples that play the game and bought 2 CE will be mighty *******

I am quite certain that SE will possibly allow folks with the buddy pass to buy just the key online and have it emailed to them. But there is no way that SE will be taking a 50$ hit do to allowing folks a trial of the game.

This is my speculation.

I know it would sound really stupid if it was true but there isn't anything official to confirm or deny from what I can find.

I know this is only second hand info but the post I read went like this:

Yup, it seems I essentially spent 76 US$ on a new registration code, a tumbler, a map to wipe my glasses with, a security token, a making of-DVD, and an Onion Helmet. The important stuff, that is, the actual game and a 30 days trial, I could have gotten for free, as I actually got a guest pass from a friend. Quote SE support center:

"Regarding your request for account support. Please find your answer below.

Your Buddy Pass account is a full account, if you do not cancel then it will continue billing. You just have an extra registration code now since you purchased the game yourself.

Thank you for contacting the SQUARE ENIX Support Center."

Wow, it would've been nice to know this before I actually ordered the CE. Not that I didn't want the CE, but if I could save 76 $ and still keep the essentials; the game installed and a full account a week before the release of the ordinary retail version, why wouldn't anyone not stinkingly rich go for that instead? Anyways, the box artwork sure is kinda nice....

A previous post in that same thread also mentioned:

From what I remember from FFXI, you didn't need to buy the retail version since you would be paying new monthly charges after the free pass was up. They could have changed it, but I am not 100% sure since SE has changed a few things around lately and hasn't been clear with their communication.

I never played FFXI so I can't verify this - I'm sure someone else can.

I guess we'll find out in a few more weeks what the actual deal is.
