I'm having a hard time choosing a main right now and was wondering if anyone wanted to help me decide or give me some suggestions. Back in FFXI I leveled twelve jobs up to 75, had a ton of crafts, sub crafts, all sub jobs, etc. I was a jack of all trades, but eventually it became quite overwhelming, especially in end game when people expected me to jump on any of the 12 at a moment's notice for some event. Now, I don't think it'll be quite so bad in FFXIV but that's not the point at all. The point is, I swore that this time around I would choose one thing, concentrate on it and try to become the best at it. I'm not completely turned off to leveling two or three things but I would really just like to stick with one or possibly one plus a craft or something.

I'm starting to notice that to be good in a craft, on most all crafts you need a sub craft, or two.. Or.. Three? Or possibly more? I'm not complaining about this but I'd rather avoid that. For example, on my leathercrafter I need to have Armorer and Weaver leveled up to make a lot of recipes. I'm wondering, are all crafts like that? Also, I've seen that most jobs are like this as well and people level different ones up for different abilities. It's starting to make me wonder how much of a individual some people will be or at the end if most people will have pretty much everything leveled up?

I've been thinking perhaps the best course of action for me would be leveling botanist or fisherman or something, but do these need to have other classes leveled up to enjoy to you think? Hmmm, decisions decisions, has anyone else faced this conundrum? I'm open to suggestions and opinions, thank you for reading.

The same thing happened in FFXI. Most NIN were /war. Most BLM were /rdm, etc; so there was less of a sense of uniqueness. What's really going to differ from character to character will likely not be abilities available, but the players' skill and equipment. A combo such as sticking to DoM jobs + 1 DoL will keep you plenty busy without requiring much cross-leveling, imo.

Yea, the way it is now you need multiple crafts to be self sufficient (Hence why Im leveling them all). I think SE wanted us to have to depend on each other, but that can take time to have to find someone with exactly what you need (Time Sink hurrah!)

What I am doing: Leveling Pugilist to 4, Conj to 4, Thaum to 10, and Lancer in between.

So my pattern is this:

Lancer -> 6 so I can do level 10 leves
Wait for leve reset
Get level 1 leves for Pug and then DoH leves, and then any L10s for LAN
Do the level 1s for Put (should take it to 4), Then DoL, then Lancer level 10s
Wait for leve reset
Repeat above for Conj
Repeat for Thaum, after the first time my Lancer should be up to 15 or so, so I can start doing level 20s for Lancer and level 1s/10s for Thaum, and not do DoL.

After that, I might take Conj to 10 for stoneskin, but I will have 3 ways to cure myself, and a ton of backup spells/abilities to take Lancer for quite some time. :)

In the downtime between leves I'll be doing DoH jobs, quests (if they become available), etc.
