Why does everyone want a bank?Follow

Seriously, why are there so many people putting a bank on the level of an AH in terms of convenience and playability?
Money can't be lost or stolen from your person, it weighs nothing, takes up no inventory space, it is really only another number on the character sheet. If you put your money in a bank, the only difference is that you won't have it if you see something that you want in someone's bazaar. An AH, okay, mail system, definitely, but banks? What?

Also, if you want a bank that bears interest...then you just don't understand final fantasy.

I think most players actually want a bank for storing goods, not storing gil. I'm full and my retainer is full, and I don't want to sell anything yet -- I still need all that junk to level my crafts.

I think they are referring to a "guild bank" like they have in WoW. Basically you can donate currency, armor, craft items to the bank and guild members of a certain rank can extract & utilize the banked items.

I think they mean for it to hold items.

I heard that the "Companies" are supposed to have something like a guildCompanybank for gil and items(?). It'll be a while before they are implemented though.

Maybe they mean a bank as in what the mog house did for items in XI? I dont know if they have this in XIV since I kinda lost touch with the game a little when the PS3 delay was announced. I kinda cant imagine a game without some sort of MH to store all the useless crap I tend to collect :3

I don't know why they'd be asking for banks -- the retainer does that.

well think about it: crafting is central to the game and crafting takes mats - there are literally NO 'trash' drops in the game. Every single thing that drops is useful in some way (which is kinda cool). Also consider how interdependent crafting professions are and it soon becomes apparent that if one wishes to craft consistently they will need to store and stockpile pretty much every item that drops for them.

Also consider that if you play different classes (and you HAVE to) you'll likely use different armor with appropriate stats for those classes, as well as the different weapons (and ammo if you're an archer). There is even gathering/crafting gear and lets not forget 2 tools for every craft you use. You can't carry all that around can you? Definitely not. You'll need storage.

Which is why you get a retainer =o

If people want an item bank in XIV, then they have an awfully short memory.

FFXI: Personal inventory - 30, after 10 wallet0destroying gobbiebag quests: 80
FFXIV: 80 slots up front, maybe quests to expand later. You can also store 12 in bazaar
FFXI: Mog House - 50 spaces, after expensive and time-consuming mog quests: 80
FFXIV: Retainer has 80 slots up front, and can be set up as a bazaar to sell 12 more items.

After that FFXI had Mog Lockers and furniture and armor NPCs, but that was all added later on, and usually only attainable by higher level players. As it stands, in FFXIV you have 184 starting inventory slots (if you price the bazaar insanely) AND crystals are not counted against you! Compared to FFXI where you had 80 total, and you couldn't sell anything from Mog (though there was AH.)
Having dealt with FFXI inventory for so long, the inventory here is luxurious. I DEFINITELY don't see what an item bank is needed for.

Apples and Oranges: FFXI didn't have +0, 1, 2, and 3 on every basic mat, nor did it have parts to make parts to make finished products. The crafting system has more depth and breadth, such that it uses far more space.

Plus, if you want to make use of the job-switching they tout as being a innovative new job system, be prepared to carry extra gear sets everywhere.

My guess is that there will be quests to increase inventory eventually. Also retainers have levels for some reason... could play into their inventory size later.

Okay, I can phrase it another way:
In FFXI, between level 1-10, I had to run back to town once or twice per level to sell things off, or simply start dropping mats.
In FFXIV, I am level 13 and haven't had to do that once (and this was all grinding.)

A place to put all my sh*t? Yeah, one retainer isn't going to cut it unless you can upgrade your inventory space to like, 300.

That was my first thought when I saw this thread. Who are these people?

Sometimes, I wish it was 2011, 2012 already. FFXIV would have settled into its place in the MMO world, and the continual comparisons with FFXI and WoW would be long irrelevant.

It is obvious the OP doesn't play a lot of MMO's which isn't a negative thing in any way. Banks within the MMO-verse are commonly known to be a place to store items.

The starting inventory space in this game is a godsend compared to practically every other MMO. People just aren't selling or dropping their junk mats because they want to level every class.

I have played plenty, and I have always seen the bank as a fairly extraneous feature until you get to higher levels and you need dex, agi, str builds or whatever. I couldn't fathom that anyone would need an item bank this early in the game, especially considering that FF is known for having limited inventory space, and forcing you to make choices with your inventory or doing really grueling tasks to get more space.

I propose going one step further by introducing player to player loans, debtors prison, a linkshell stock exchange and a derivatives trading system for every item present in the game.

Yeah, and you could buy out LS's and all of their gear and then sell off all of the pieces to make a substantial profit. Put one of your buddies in charge as LS Leader and give him a nice golden parachute once the company crashes.
