Some Questions From a Former FFXI and WoW PlayerFollow

I would like to open with an apology to all for the question I am about to present. I am sure the information I am looking for already exists on this forum but I have not come across it.

Some background info: I played FFXI for almost 4 years. My favorite job, without a doubt, was Beastmaster. I was very sad when they modified monster mechanics to nerf MPK (only because it screwed up the traditional leveling process of beastmasters). I eventually migrated to WoW where I was first a hunter then, thanks to a brief medical issue, found time to level a druid which would become my main and my undeniable most favorite class in the game. Druid, of course, is not a pet class like beastmaster but a shapeshifting hybrid melee/caster/tank/healer (whatever you wanted it to be). I ultimately took it in the direction of close range melee DPS.

And my question is this: To those familiar with FFXI and/or WoW, is there any class which resembles the awesomeness that was Beastmaster and still is Druid? Either an effective pet class or some sort of hybrid intended to be able to fulfill multiple roles depending on how you build it?

Well there are presently no pet classes at all... so unfortunately the Beastmaster comparison is right out.

Essentially every class is a hybrid and is what you make it. Since you essentially build your own class in this game you can make it whatever you want. Though no amount of class-building will turn you into an unstoppable death kitty... sorry Smiley: frown

Unfortunately, no OR not yet. There are no "beast" type or purposely intentional hybrids.

However, every class can use abilities from other classes to create a sort of hybrid role.

Right now on my Pugilist I have almost a 50/50 split of Marauder/Pugilist abilities.

Thanks for your answers.

I just wish SE would have chosen class names that give some sort of idea as to WTF the class does :-P

This is an interesting point. While the flexibility of swapping weapons on the fly to change class is inventive, it does feel a little lacking (for me personally - I know it works for others) compared to the clearly defined job system of XI. Plus, it was a lovley throwback to the origins of Final Fantasy, especially with the classic looks of the AF sets.

I think in time, we will get used to the class system, and more importantly, the purpose of each job alone and in a group. This is why I want more testing and exploration of possibilities from the community. Everything we learned in XI came from the clever and determined people who played it, not made it.

I don;t hold to the custom class idea. It's a nice selling point on a press release, but ambiguity and vagueness is not part of good game design, especially in a long term play like an MMO. Purpose is everything.

To be honest the pure classes and names fit their roles pretty well. The only class that I can see NOT adhering to it's general role is Lancer (support/buff/debuff).

I do agree with XI's job system. I loved AF and hope that FFXIV has a quest for job specific armor.

But NO pet class? Really? I mean come on, SE :-P Granted, I've spent the last 2+ years tearing sh*t up as an "unstoppable death kitty" (brilliant, Callinon, just brilliant if I do say so myself) but I wasn't expecting anything very close to a druid in XIV. I was, however, hoping for something at least kind of like a Beastmaster. But oh well, I'm still most likely buying it once it hits store shelves.

If my paycheck proves to be large enough, of course. I've still got bills and rent to pay. And a decade old student loan I'm almost a full month behind on. Yes, I fail.

They said they will probably add pet classes later, due to the more extensive balancing they need.

So there's no AH, no banks and no pet classes. In the neverending battle against goldfarmers did SE also not put money into the game? :-P

Kidding, of course!

Imagine that, an MMORPG without a form of currency. I guess in theory it could work...
