I hate to play devils advocate because this patcher does need some tweaks but you need to think of this in a different manner. In the 90s things were simple the people were new to computers and the graphics sucked so things were designed to accommodate that. It is now 2010 the kids are sexting on their jailbroke phones. The average computer gamers knowledge is high and the graphics are awesome. I can only assume SE thinks that this is a manageable 10 minute thing for the average new computer. Which is correct. I wish I could make this particular patcher easier for you but all I can do is attempt to tell you what to do from here. For those of you who don't have control over your networks... well that is where this system fails. For the rest of the people playing tho.. simple things fix the problem.

A very helpful "education" thread is on these very forums that tells you how to fix this.

This is not the fault of SE as the downloader works ok for those of us that have forwarded the relevant ports. Dont blame SE for your hardware setup.

LOL

So many @#%^ing fanbois running around the FF forums. Yes, it is SE's fault for releasing a sh*tty updated and an unfinished game. For the love of god stop defending their 1,000 mistakes.

Honestly, I used to have your problem, then i followed the thread and opened ports (actually i did this during beta) and now I update at very fast speed. It is not SE's fault that you are completely ignorant. They designed the game for people who can follow simple instructions. If you cant, maybe you should learn to read (and write while you are at it) and take the very kind advice provided by Zoltanrs.

Not a fanboi - just a player whose updater runs very, very fast. Actaully I retract my advice, please ignore me. I really dont want idiots like you playing teh game so am happy for you to rage quit because you cant follow simple instructions.

The average person does not know what port forwarding is, nor or they involved in forum discussions. This is a very big mistake on SE's part and they are alienating a huge portion of their market base.

If they do not fix the issue, then it will hurt their member base, which hurts all of us. Therefore, do not defend them; instead send them feedback to fix that issue. I don't even know what port their torrent client uses. They are very bad at making information available to the average user.

shame, shame, shame on SE.

Also, what happens when someone doesnt have access to their router settings.

Point of the matter is, you should not have to do system changes and hardware customisations just to update a game out of the box. The updater was horribly implemented, and it could have been easily avoided using standard best practices that are already in place with other games.

This isn't 1999. SE is 100% at fault on this slipup. Fanbois mess the game up just as much as ragequitters, because they refuse to admit there are real problems, therefore they do not help try to implemment or provide feedback to come to a solution. I've already submitted multiple feedback messages on major issues, and I encourage everybody else to do so.

SE WILL listen to their customer base. We need to work together with them to improve the game.

You know what? I didn't know what it was at one time either. I bet no one in the world was born just knowing it. Many of us have taken the time to figure it out though, because it's important. It's not that complicated. Portforward.com can walk you through it, for most commonly used routers. Portforward.com also happens to be the first result you get from Google by typing in 'portforwarding.' There's no excuse for not taking the time to do some reading, except for laziness, and an insistence on having immediate gratification.

They could either stand around whining like a baby about how unfair life is, or they could contact their network administrator to find out what their options are, like a responsible adult would. Wanna take a guess at which solution works, and which one doesn't?

hardware setup? most tom **** or harry's laptops are pre built with nothing fancy no port changes etc etc.

Because shiney new laptops aren't routers...? That little box with the wires and antennas coming out the back that your ISP stuck somewhere in your house is your router. It has nothing to do with your PC, laptop, etc.

What people dont get is this is something that should not exist. When you buy a game you expect it to work.

Except the game works. Quite well actually. So the downloads are slow and you have to do a little extra work to make it faster. Guess what, you know all those other games with the "good" download speeds people talk about? Those connections can be faster too! They just happen to be using ports that are already open.
