What did you expect?
The best judgment of future performance is past performance. If you never played or heard of FFXI I understand your frustration, but the Japanese cannot run network infrastructure to save their lives as we all seen in FFXI. As per the law of the land “Respect for Grrrandfather” prevents them from outsourcing their network infrastructure to anyone who has knowledge on running one.

Seriously, name one popular network service invented by the Japanese. Their too dam proud, and using history as an example, there’s really not much to be proud of. Get with it SE!

You're either bad at sarcasm or good at failing... I can't tell which, but probably the latter. Japan is always on some next level **** though, so you shouldn't generalize. If you wanna stick it to SE, then go right ahead. They do it because it's cheaper and they come out of the red sooner, but definitely not because "Japanese cannot run network infrastructure to save their lives". They run something like 30 times faster internet connections than we do. Their cell phone network is 5g while we're still on 3g.

Feel free to go back and edit your post, but realize that in the time it took you to fix your mistake... 1000 dirty old men used their phones to buy used panties from a vending machine while they were riding on a bullet train.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

Just though I'd take a moment to point out that Blizzard actually had exactly the same problem when they launched WoW.

so id have to say no matter how bad it is its 100x better then wow@ launch

Rookie mistake is rookie. This game being the second FFMMO from square doesn't really qualify it for this comparison. Doing something the first time allows you some slack for not being prepared, but learning from mistakes is clearly something SE has shown they aren't quite understanding.

1 person from a ls on xi gets on a server, they get a world pass for all (lets say) 25 ls members.

This happens with all 2k ppl on the server, thats 25 x 2,000 which would be 50,000 people all trying to get on the same server.

Limit a world pass to one per person. That's the problem with extreme examples; they are normally refuted without any real effort.

Yep, that would work. Another method that would eliminate this as a concern is to limit to paid world passes (or perhaps paid after a one time free world pass). People who really want in would have an option, and most people would simply ignore it. Much like the option to change worlds in FFXI, which costs money but was available to those who wanted it.

You could also have a random server assigned by default unless a player knows which one they want and types it in at character creation (IIRC, this is what FFXI did for some time until a change a few years back). That would largely eliminate the issue of random players just picking based on a popular name they remember, and allow for the people who know what they are trying to do to get on the server they want.

This is an especially big problem because S-E is very intentionally marketing FFXIV to past FFXI players who built close relationships over the course of their time with XI. ****, they even have bonus equipment for FFXI players. They KNOW that linkshells from XI will want to stay together in XIV, but they don't give any way to do that.

Take my example. I really want to join the server that my wife has been playing on for a week with her guild and our other friends. I couldn't join in the initial launch of the game because I was out of the country for a week and didn't have a crystal ball to see that SE was going to pull something like this. What was I supposed to do? Magically see into the future? Instead my "free" trial time is ticking away and there's no option for me to join my wife's server, even though I'm using HER buddy pass. What about that makes sense? SE should have at least let people join the same server as the person who gives you the buddy pass.

Hard to argue against that... why would you not be able to play on the same server as the person who invited you with their ONE buddy pass? Why would you want to invite a "buddy" to the game who you can never play with?

@Rayne
Yeah, if you watch the dance, the time kept going up but the position in queue was going down. Epic launch fail.
