Downside for wearing gear higher ranked than oneself?Follow

I've asked many people this, in-game, and have had such varied responses that it's impossible for me to come up with any sort of solid conclusion. Some say stats just decrease to meet your rank, others say they damage faster, while I've also heard they last them longer before repairs than their lower rank gear, and I've even seen people with weapons that are 8 ranks too high for them, kicking ****, regardless.

Does anyone know the truth about this? I'm rank 17, but still running around in rank 13 armor (which looks awful), but I've got a rank 23 set of armor that's looking all the more tempting from what I've seen and heard from some people...

I can't tell. I imagine it is just nerfed.

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.

I always figured it would be something like it degrades faster than if you're at least optimal rank.

A few downsides:

1) You don't get the full stats that show for the armor. You can test how much you are getting by equipping and unequipping while making note of the change and subtracting that number from the total listed by the armor.

2)I have heard rumors of other negatives such as: Slower attack/movement speed, faster wear, less skill points, etc.

3)It will cost a lot to repair. NPC price to repair items skyrockets with higher Rank gear. The same for materials required. They will be harder to find/cost more and require higher level crafter to repair.

It's up to you to decide if it's worth it though.

I have a very specific example that i've been toying with.

So I bought a willow wand (rank 22) at around rank 15 conjurer. I currently use Elm Cane (Rank 11) and have been testing the stat differences every rank.

I am currently rank 17 Conj (+6 elm) (-5 willow) and the willow wand is still -3 on all stats compared to the elm cane. I also have a noticeable drop in accuracy even though the accuracy stat is only 3 worse than the elm cane.

My theory is that at rank 18, they will equal out and then start getting better at a rate of 3 points per level until 22 when it will get its full stats.

Wearing gear higher than your current level results in:

Reduced stats (conformed)
Faster equipment decay (theory)
More expensive repairs (confirmed)

Anyone know if the theory of fewer skill points earned is true?

I heard rumors going about for people wearing gear below their level, that the stronger you get the less effective your gear for that rank is. Also, how does the optimal rank work, is it your physical level or your class rank? For example my Physical is 17, my class (Conjurer) is 12. Right now I'm wearing some Rank 11 (Body/Legs), 8 (Neck/Ear) 7 (Feet/Weapon), 5 (Shield), and 2 (Rings) equipment. I'm also using a pair of weathered spectacles but those are just for cosmetic purposes really. Anyhow, will the effectiveness of my armor be determined by my physical or class? I'd imagine class but switching to a Rank 1 class hasn't given me any "uncomfortable" messages leading me to believe otherwise.

I believe it downgrades itself to your level, however it is less effective than something that is optimal at your level. For example, at rank 8, a optimal 8 robe would be better than the optimal 16 upgrade by a small margin. I can only comment on what I've seen, which was a rank 1 pugilist wearing the sheepskin harness and subligar, and I did get the full stat bonus on them (2dex 1 vit each I believe), despite their being optimal 13, however I did not look at the armor/defence value.
