Help. I'm running around killing stuff and haven't a clue where to go to buy new gear. I've done several levequests and have a lot gill and tons of shards. Any advice appreciated.

To buy gear you must do one of two things:

1) Buy the gear from other players or NPCs. It will take you a while to find certain pieces of gear from other players and chances are it will be severely over-priced.

As for the NPCs, they only sell certain things. It's basically a limited over-priced choice.

2) Craft it or keep doing Leves and hope for some.

I personally enjoy crafting. The problem is that most of the pieces take an insane amount of materials. Leves will occasionally and randomly might I add, give you a piece of gear.

My personal advice is either craft or shop around with items in mind.

Armorer: Heavier Armor.
Carpenter: Magic Canes/Wands/Shields (w/ Leatherworker)
Goldsmith: Jewelry
Weaver: Cloth Armor
Leathercrafter: A lot of vital pieces for all crafts
Alchemist: Glue and oil for parts
Blacksmith: Weapons and tools

That's pretty much the "skinny".

I appreciate the tips. I've done zero research on FF14 before jumping in... it's been fun though.

I'm playing a conjurer right now and I know nothing about the crafting classes. What crafting class should I be working on to make better wands?

Carpenter would be DoH for you if you wish to craft better weaponry. I think at 11 they can make level 6 Conjurer Canes. (I have seen some level 11 Conjurer Canes for 6k on Figaro, so you could luck out and save yourself a lot of time and money. The problem with not leveling Carpenter now is that in the end you'll pay MUCH MUCH more for repairs)

LOL... thanks for the tips. I'll go start some carpentry. Sounds like I'll need it.
