Ok, low level data, but that's all I got.

Tested skillup rates between light thrust and Skewer. Using a Weathered Spear, rank 6 lancer, physical level 9. Fought Star Marmots just south of camp Black Brush since there's a nice concentration there. All mobs conned blue. After hitting rank 7 lancer I stopped. Only recorded hits, since I'm assuming you can't skillup on a miss. All skillups were treated equally, the best were about ~50 points for both Light Thrust and Skewer, the worst was a 4 point Skewer, but they all counted as simply a skillup.

The assumption was that rates would be better on skewer, due to it doing higher damage and being usable less often. However, the data suggested otherwise. Out of 100 landed Light Thrusts, 27 produced a skillup (27% chance). Out of 34 landed Skewers, 9 produced a skillup (26.47% chance). From this, I make the assumption that skillup rates between the two are identical.

You failed with a basic error (no offense): the marmot has no def. If you test on some very tough mobs, I assure you will see vast different between 30 dmg and 200 dmg. Go test on Thick Shell or Billy Goat, they have quite decent defense and Hp long enough for more solid testing. The SP/DMG is relative, if it's 1 SP ~ 1 dmg and 100 is the most you can get, then 100SP ~ 100 dmg and 99,999 dmg it's still 100 SP.

This is why many people still believe you're better off solo, or you're better off using Weathered weapon for SP gain, and then say the system is stupid because they can't get past 20+...

I would like to point out a bad side to this type of system. My fiance and I started playing FFXIV CE together at the same time. My MRD and her PGL have not done anything individually. Because of this system my MRD is at the start of rank 12 and her PGL is near the end of rank 13 simply because she always hits more often than my MRD does.

yeah lancers have a similar advantage, weapon skills that apply a debuff get a second chance at sp gain.
