version update doesn't even startFollow

The problems I've seen posted about version download updates don't seem to apply to my situation. So I apologize in advance if this is repetitive. I just installed the game, no issues. When I boot it does the version check and tries to download updates. It doesn't even start. It downloads that .patch file but there's no actual progress...0kbps, 0 remote and local connections. I tried going through utorrent but its not working either.

My apartment is on a university campus, and I'm wondering if torrents might be blocked? is that possible? I've disabled anything and everything on my computer that could possibly block it

Its very possible that your campus blocks either the ports required or p2p altogether. You should check with your school's network admins.

Only if your connection is supplied by the university directly.

Yeah it is, I have the option of getting my own through the cable company, but I'd prefer not to have to pay 40 bucks a month for something i get free other wise. I've heard something about using different ports to solve the issue? Is there any way to override so I can use torrents?

Probably not. Universities tend to be pretty strict about locking down on torrent usage. Maybe you can talk to them about it and explain the problem to get yourself an exception?

If this was gonna work you would have to contact the helpdesk for the university and find out if they have something set up to allow these kinds of things. They're usually pretty strict with their provided networks but it might be worth the phone call to see if possibly they have any ports open or what you are expected to do for those situations. I would assume the answer will be get your own line but a phone call can't hurt.

thanks for the advice! I'm a staff member and we get exceptions on other things like pets, so lets hope i get one here too! If not I may just return it after all the negative things i've read about the game itself.

Back when I was in college I managed to get my university IT department to open certain network ports for me. I sent a really pathetic email that explained why I couldn't play Diablo II unless some number of ports were open, and they took pity on me and opened them so that I could play. It never hurts to ask.

Keep in mind that some of the lower level positions (the people you'd be talking to) are often students, and can be fairly lenient in allowing you a pass.

turns it out it was indeed p2p blocking causing the issue. network admins won't unblock for me, and square enix only told me to go to a community site to find a direct download...and as it turns out they have asked everyone to remove direct downloads. great. i've got a software refund request "under investigation" now. I'm sad I never even got to try the game, especially since it was one of the major motivating factors for me buying a big new fancy desktop to help run it.
