I've read a lot about how much this game sucks, and about how amazingly awesome it is with super potential... but I have heard pretty much nothing about people partying. Do people just solo, or PT for an hour and do guild leves, or do they actually set up a decent PT, find a camp, and grind mobs for xp?

You almost have to duo at 16+ to do rank20 leves and grinding in general. However, a "party" sized group is not ideal in FFXIV. Duo or trio at most. Anything more becomes inefficient.

In my experience, the only PT's that form are from your linkshell. I did get a chance to join one in the laat two weeks. It was super fail but at least there was some interaction. Shouts and says are met with deafening silence for the most part on istory. Part of this I suspect is the difficulty in chatting while shopping and tradeskilling.

Today I had a guy ask in say twice for a group when I had just started a synth, nobody responded and by the time I was done he had given up and wasn't online anymore. So maybe it's a lack of patience but I know that I have spent a lot of time trying to find simple things like maple lumber around people that were actually making it. I use the translator words to request it and waited a good 10 minutes while they continued to make what I needed and ignored me. So I went to the market and spent 45 minutes searching retainers to no avail. I gave up and paid the 4k gil to repair my shield.

I'm sure it will vary by server but istory seems pretty introverted so far.

Best Exp that I have had personally was in a 6 man party grinding tough mobs in one of the caves in Gridania. In my experience, the best way to gain exp in this game is to play it exactly the same way as you played FFXI - if you played FFXI.

I guess it is possible to solo, but the exp is bad. Two and three man parties can give good exp so overall there are options which is what SE indicated to be the case.

Post 12 I exclusively group levelled my conjurer until I got to 17 and hit Surplus - since then been doing other things.

Hm. I did play FFXI for a couple of years. I would like the feeling I got when I took the boat from Mhuara (spelling) to Selbina. The journey to Mhuara was dangerous, and when I got to selbina there were a ton of players hanging out, bazaaring, lfp, etc. A lot of the fun was leveling up and wondering what the next zone was going to be like. Qufim, Kazham, Garlaige, Crawler's Nest... good times. I hope by PS3 release when this game stabilizes, the community will have developed grind spots, and the world will be a dangerous place to travel carelessly. I played Beta 2, but decided not to buy the game for now, mostly due to the lack of partying.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

If you party in a group of 4+, you risk the chance of getting 0XP on any given kill.

The person beside you can make 15k/hr while you make 2k. This is one of the most severe flaws in the game at the moment. Some speculate that this is overzealous anti-powerleveling script, others believe it is simply a bug in the party xp pool.

Some SE apologists even claim this is a "feature" to ensure that all party members contribute equally, but if you meet such a person I recommend calling their mother a ***** and then promptly disband.

People falsely claim that "you are getting XP after each fight, it just doesn't show up sometimes". In reality you are getting 0xp and the someone else in your group is getting 500+. You are being exploited and earning someone else a lot of xp.

Duo is best. Or just don't level up anything besides a crafting job until SE fixes the game.

I usually grind all by myself at a decent speed until an LS member joins me, then everything becomes ..... well, fast XD

solo, small group party for xp and then big group party for leve (sorta raiding activity). I have never done more than 3 ppl party for xp though and it may not be that efficient, at least until people find camps (for now it is mostly roaming). Small group party are a lot of fun, faster than solo, and easy to setup so that's all good (but maybe not as well organized as FF11 for now).
I can vouch for the chat issue making people not answer you, I'm guilty of the same flaw. If I'm mining or crafting, I just can't answer due to really poor chat design...
