A Love/Hate Relationship With CraftingFollow

The actual IDEA of the crafting system is absolutely fantastic. It's intuitive, fun, somewhat strategic, and a complete revolution from crafting in any other game I've played. I really WANT to enjoy it and experience all there is to offer with it, but it is just so unbelievably frustrating.

For example, I just finished a rank 10 weaver leve. I'm currently rank 13 and using a bronze needle. I know it isn't the best option, but it is certainly better than a rusty needle. I failed 3 out of 4 of my attempts at the craft and for absolutely no reason other than crafting is WAY too random. I'll use Maker's Muse (ability to increase the success of standard) and then proceed to fail 2 out of 3 of the next synths. I'll use the wait command when the color isn't stable. I'll use standard when it's white and STILL fail half the time. My gear is not damaged, nor is the bronze needle. There is absolutely NO WAY I should be failing 3/4 on a leve 3 ranks below me.

Another example will be simply trying to make something like bronze chainmail (a VERY basic piece of armor). There are 14 different required synths for it, or I can scour bazaars for a couple hours hoping to find some of the stuff I need. Then of course, I actually have to hope and pray that I not fail any of the components. Oh wait, I ended up failing the LAST SYNTH twice yesterday, even though I have all necessary crafts ABOVE the rank needed for final synth.

Sorry, that is not fun. That is not how a crafting system should work. Hard work should be rewarded, not punished. I can actually live with a lot of the lag and UI issues for a little while, but I really don't know if I can handle a crafting system that basically FORCES you to play as a hardcore player and then still punishes you for absolutely no reason and without warning. I realize the whole "This is SE" argument, but at a certain point you have to stop and wonder if maybe its not so much about skill in this game as it is about dumb luck and really just not caring what happens.

SE is really running out of time imo. If they can't get some kind of balance going by the end of this "free month", I can't fathom myself paying to play a game that frustrates me even MORE than ffxi did.

Sorry for the rant, I know I've already gone off on crafting but I am just having a hard time justifying the rationale of this system...

I haven't had any problems. I have found (and this is something I believe often gets overlooked) is that when a synthesis recipes states it requires a specific facilities...you go get that facility or you will end up frustrated and wasting shards & mats. I think a lot of people assume that if they outrank the recipe, they don't need the facility, but I do not believe this to be the case.

For instance, without a Common Clothshop buff I fail a lot of undyed hempen cloth combines, even though I'm Weaver Rank 11. With the buff, I fail almost none. Same with Taupe Sheep Leather, I fail constantly without the Guild Tannery buff, but with it, I haven't failed on combine.

The crafting system is deep, demanding, and complex because they are classes in their own right, designed to stand alone if desired. Smiley: wink

I'd rather hear what the community has to say. That place is full of people who just downright HATE the game and will just give a biased view.

I always get support for anything that requires it. It helps a bit, but the system is still way too random.

Also, if they are supposed to be standalone classes, why can I not level them independently? EVERY craft requires you to have others raised to make ingredients. It is absolutely impossible to consistently level up just 1 craft unless you just want to make the same starter recipe over and over and over and over... I don't quite understand how that makes them designed as stand alone classes if desired. Conversely, I can level a GLD from 1-50 without TOUCHING another class if I so choose. Yes I will be missing out on abilities, but the DoW/DoM classes are designed to be independent of each other if that's the way you choose to play. The DoH classes are not, and that doesn't seem right to me.

Just a little side note: I am running an LS for ffxiv. Two weeks before CE launch we had about 30 active members all excited for the game. Now, only 2 weeks in we have about 8-10 solid members. I'm hoping that is just an aberration, but losing 66% of players in 2 weeks tells me this game is in serious trouble...
