I expected a variety of people joining FFXIV and steeled myself against the mass influx of other flavors of players, but I swear if I hear someone say 'whisper' or 'wanna group' or freaking 'toon' one more time, I'm going to stab them in the eye!!!

XD

At this point I don't think we can afford to be turning people away just because they say "toon" instead of some arbitrary term the FFXI elite passed down from on high. Seriously, when was the convention to decide what would be acceptable game vernacular for FFXIV? Was it in one of those "It's just a beta!" threads? I must've missed it...

With all due respect.....and I said with all due respect because that makes whatever I say OK.

Seriously...explain your original post...because to me you sound like a stupid ***. (not to sound mean or anything).

You prepared yourself for a lot of players to play the game but you are genuinely annoyed and are /stabbing people because they use the term "toon"......ask players if they want to "group up" and tell each other to "whisper" them?

If this is the case, you are an idiot IMO.
Please quit the game and don't post on ZAM.

I remember "whisper" from Starcraft, though I'm sure it's been around longer.

I cannot help you there as I have never played that game. And not really a difference in Toon, Avatar, Character, Presence, Thing I look at that moves when I tell it to sometimes other then what you call it so I have no idea what this OP is talking about and why he is getting mad.

I think it was a whisper in Asheron's Call.. but I am not 100% certain.

Edit: Nevermind, I believe it was @tell and @retell, my mistake. But I am pretty sure i have played online games years ago that it was whisper, thought it was that but I was wrong.

We're not playing toon town, we're playing a real MMO. It's not some arbitrary term the FFXI elite passed down that must be used, it's any term that isn't "toon". The convention was held a few years ago, when we all decided "rolling a toon" sounds retarded.

But when you take into consideration that we only get 85 characters to type with, and that if you are doing anything else other then just standing there not doing a thing, 'toon' works and usually gets the message across for what ever that person is talking about.

Oh but this is a Final Fantasy MMO, why do something in 1 step when 20 will do? Otherwise it would be too "easy".

At this point I think it just boils down to an aversion to anything that might be even remotely connected to WoW, rational or not, no matter how small. Well WoW also has people who actually want to play it, and if threads like this keep turning them away...let's just say that's another thing in common with WoW the deadgyes of FFXIV won't have to worry about.

"char" is just as short. That's a stupid argument anyway, and I would know- since it's incredibly similar to the one I used to justify my diablo 2-esque typing when I was 13 and just started xi. Nobody uses the word toon unless you're playing WoW or Toon Town. (I also hate the use of the word roll recently, because in WoW, XI, and XIV, you are not rolling sh*t when you make a new character.)

I don't know about other people, but the hate against the usage of the word "toon" has nothing to do with it being used for WoW; personally. Characters indeed do look like cartoony pieces of **** in WoW(Apparently you are getting ********* res textures with cata, yay), so toon is appropriate. Characters in XI or XIV? They don't, so it doesn't fit.

It annoys me when someone calls their character a "toon". Last I checked we weren't running around as characters from an animated show. I just call them char or alt (depending on the character played.) when I play. And "rolling" usually comes from a dungeon crawler where you keep recreating in hopes of higher stats, right? I'm not sure how that exactly fits into most MMOs these days since stats are set at the start based on class/job/race/etc.

Judging someone for using fairly standard terms that you in particular don't like will only hamper your enjoyment of the game, not theirs.

I'd rather judge them based on... well meaningful things like interactions / competance... but hey, to each their own.

Edit:

Samus - rolling means rolling dice to create stats for your character during creation in D&D.

Your prejudice is showing.

The game doesn't come with a dictionary of FFXI vernacular to go along with it. People will use the vocabulary that's familiar to them.

Language is a learned behavior, if these people stick around long enough, they will eventually learn and begin to use the terms that everyone else is using so that they can be understood, it's human nature to do so.

Plenty of people use 'toon' in other mmos, regardless of the accuracy of the labeling. I don't see any established community lingo here in FFXIV, so what gives you or anyone else to say what should be proper word usage?

Wikipedia references it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toon

Language isn't static, it'll change over time whether you like it or not.

Anyway, I bet it'd really bother you guys if there was a larger base of new-to-ff-mmo players that decided 'toon was acceptable.

(and what's this ghostbusters thing about? If this was in some reference to my name, you're off the mark: this name was taken from Ghost in the Shell.)

Does it really matter? I think what it comes down to is that some people are just sticklers for details. It's a carry-over from 'other' mmos where characters are referenced to as 'toons', and people just won't stop referring to avatars as 'toons' right off the bat in a new MMO. Maybe in a year when there's established communities there will be, but right now, throwing a hissy fit over people calling their characters toons?

What if the majority of the player base ended up not as former "FF" MMO players, but players from "other" mmos, and the majority decided that 'toon was fine, what would you do, then? Rip your hair out? Foam at the mouth? Black-list all the heathens that would refer their to their toons as...toons?

edit:
I guess there could be a similar case made against the use of the term(s) "tank/tanking" in MMOs, but I don't care to go beyond pointing that out.

It wouldn't happen, because characters in XI don't look like cartoon characters. The only(?) mmos that have a community where people call characters toons are the ones where the characters look cartoonish. Most people that are still using the word toon for xiv are those that are coming from such games and haven't adjusting yet. Which means we need to show them the way to correct their ignorant ways. :D

All I can say is that if you're so uptight over a simple term used to describe someone's character, or a group of players joined together to fight monsters, or a private message, you're just ruining it for yourself. Why so xenophobic? I can tell straight up it's not the words that bother you...it's knowing that they're used in other MMOs, no doubt a specific MMO, and since you have this irrational need to hate all things associated with that MMO, you must then be a whiny twit about the words people use to describe things. It doesn't matter if the words are adopted and become descriptive in common usage to you. It's the association. If someone uses the word "toon" are you automatically going to have your...toon...transported to Azeroth?

It's like hoity-toity music lovers who automatically decree that anything mainstream is automatically crap. You know why I use the word "toon"? Because the word "char" isn't even a full word and is stupid, and the word "character" is more than twice as many letters to type, not because something looks "cartoony".

Get over it.
#33 Oct 08 2010 at 5:03 AM Rating: Decent
Personal preferences aside, I think the point is "Who cares?"

I know I probably come off as someone who hates the game and wants it to fail, but I'm not. I like this game, I really do, I think it has enormous potential. But the only way it will have the chance to see that potential realized is if 1,2,3 months from now people still want to play.

With all the threads and indications that people are dropping off like flies, it's just astounding to me to still be seeing people harping on something as inconsequential as the term "toon". We should be ecstatic that people are still trying to give the game a chance, not whining because they use a word from a game they might be familiar with.

At this stage in the game I just don't see the benefit in driving people away over stupid stuff like this.

Mostly just because to me it sounds immature vs. the term 'character.'

*edit* I guess it would be similar to how many anime fans get upset when anime is dismissed as cartoons. For some reason 'cartoon' and 'toon' have immature connotations to them in the English language.

I never understood where the usage of toon came from myself and hate it just because of the inaccuracy of the term.

However I have no qualms with grouping or whispering as they make sense and are just alternative terms that actually make sense.

To avoid all of this lingo bias/disagreement I think that we should start a new FFXIV set of terms to thus infect every other subsequent game.

I am now going to be referring to Characters as Online Virtual Presence (OVP)
Tells are going to be known as Instant Personal Messages (IPM)
And parties are going to be referred to as Social Multiple Presence Gatherings (SMPG)
I'm also going to throw an alternative to Leve/Quests in as well - Virtual World Objective (VWO)

So in short, if you want to SMPG for some VWO, then IPM my OVP.
If you want to complain about terminology then I'll give you something genuine to complain about...

Also if you think I'm serious about the new terminology you can GTFO.

I think we are missing a great opportunity in this thread. Since XIV is still new and sorta fresh still, we as a community can decide on the lingo we would like to use. By doing this we can all unite and be asshats to people who don't use our new XIV lingo. That's some community unity right there (holy frick, that rhymes!).

Tired of calling a defensive player the "Tank"? lets come up with a better names for that role!

Sick of hearing people call a damage dealing character a "DPS"? We can team up and decide on our own lingo!

Tired of "Toon"? Lets come up with something else!

!!!!!!!! some extra exclamation points for you to use.

Edit: added some more exclamation points for your fun

It's a reasonable assumption to make that since "toon" is used in other mmo's and in particular the largest paid mmo, that it is the a very commonly used term for the application in the mmo genre. Hence, its a FAIRLY standard term.

But hey, continue to act as you want. I can tell you with no level of uncertainty that if you freak out in game over such trivial and petty issues that you will alienate yourself from quality players.

And for reference, all of the terms you complain about were used in FFXI in 2002-2004 as well. The terms toon and whisper and group were all used extensively in FFXI, at least during my tenure.

I never seen it used till post WoW release. Early on when I used to watch family play XI in 2002+ people called them 'Avatars', but around NA release they were referred to as characters because the summons for summoner were called Avatars so the term dropped in favor of 'character' then post WoW 'toon' popped up more so.

omg a guy used a term you dont like. and he had the audacity to allow you to over hear it. this is just as dumb as nerd raging because someone at the table asked you to pass the catsup , when its clearly labeled ketchup.

i acctually played ff for 4 years then i played wow for almost 2 now i call characters toons just a habit now and its easier then typing out "character" lol get over yourself. i can guarentee you that will die out in the next month or 2 like it did with 11 this game is very hard and frustrating atm and it will weed out all the baddies like 11 did early on.

What's with all the seriousness and bitter replies? I think this game's issues are getting to people lol.

I was just creating a funny post which the first few responders obviously picked up on and bantered with me a little - a fun time was had ^.^

Dude, you just need to chill out! XD
