If you are uncertain now I would honestly wait a few months let SE work things out.
I like the game my self. I recognize the issues many players have with it. But I have patience and I'm willing to ride out the storm of the first few months to see where SE wants to take this game.
Right now XIV is a slow burn. You aren't presented with a lot to do up front. Besides level your different classes, or craft. The story CS take time to get to. lv 1 10 15 20 and 26. And at this point it's a solo game. The potential for a huge engrossing game is here. Just not available yet. This is where having patience is crucial.
Things to be aware of if you choose to play now:
1) It might not run very well on your system. Run the XIV benchmark to see how it preforms.
2) While hardware mouse has been implemented, the Mouse isn't used besides selection and camera movement. (get a gamepad to make your XIV life easier)
3) There will undoubtedly be many changes / improvements / additions in the coming months, While it may take time for things to happen, those things will.
If you are a fan of Western MMO (WoW, LoTRO, EQ2 ect ect) you will not find the experience to be similar at all. You will most likely not like XIV.
If you played FFXI and didn't like it, don't play this.
If you played FFXI and want a graphical upgrade with the same cornucopia of content to devour, Wait on playing XIV.
If you love XI (I do!) and want to be part of a new world and experience the changes of a new MMO give XIV a go.
Maybe if you can wait for the ps3 launch. especially if your PC doesn't play the benchmark well. PS3 will run you $300 (plug a USB keyboard into the PS3 to chat or buy a bluetooth KB.) You'll be playing with a controller which is honestly the way to play this game. It'll launch with 6 months of additional dev time, and have a less dramatic community than what is currently here.
FFXIV has it's first official RMT'r: Zyuu
