A friend of mine at work claims he read on Square Enix's forums that FFXIV will be free to play on PS3, but will require a small fee to access some content ($5 or something per month, mostly endgame content).

I don't believe him for a second, but SE's website is so convoluted, slow, and hard to navigate that I couldn't find any evidence supporting either view.

Does anyone else know about this? Like I said, I think the guy's full of crap, but I wanna make sure before I order the video cards for my new PC.

This claim doesn't even make any sense, because there won't be "PS3 accounts" to be charged no money. You will have an FFXIV account option on your Square Enix account. The account will be able to be logged on to from either any PC with FFXIV installed, or any PS3 with FFXIV installed (well, with the exception that you can't cross regions). SE can't discriminate against PC (or PS3) players because there is no such thing as a "PC player" or a "PS3 player". There are only players, who happen to be playing on a PC or PS3 today, but may be playing on the other tomorrow.

I'm hoping this is the case with the PS3 setup as that's my plan. Beeing able to switch from the PC to my comfy recliner and big screen to play is a+++++.

PS3 took the route of the 360. You can now pay for more options on the PS3 network, but this doesn't carry over to games. They aren't going to charge you an extra fee to play online. This may be what that guy was talking about.

You don't need gold membership to play games. You need that for downloading movies and stff. Not sure what it was for FF XI though.

Actually, you need a PS3 registration code added to your account in order to play on a PS3. Squeenix confirmed that. You actually need to use the code in the box this time to play on multiple platforms.

if its anything like FFXI for the PS2 it'll be exactly like the it is now. Pay a monthly fee, log onto the network (on ps2 it fired up as soon as you turned on the ps2 with the disk in) and you're off. I had both the PC/PS2 version of XI and they were pretty much identical and i used the same character on both rigs. On the 360 you didn't need Gold membership but SE billed you themselves.

It'll probably just be installed on your HDD and sit on your XBM just like any demo/DLC.
