ok i got this cause my 5970 didnt fit on old mobo.. just a cheap temporary mobo til tax tim which is when i do major upgrades

unfortunatly. everything is correctly setup its not my pc build as ive built several pcs. i keep getting "no os found"
so i dles official win xp pro sp3 and win 7 enterprise editions and made boot discs.. ew mobo wont even read discs

sooo i had a friend bring over an official win xp pro installation disc. it formats drives starts to install and midway thru restarts pc and says something like booting for C:\ windows boot failed retyr or reset.. retry = "missing operating system"
reinstall after reinstall = same results

i am now using killdisc for dos v4.1 to see if this has any effect which ill follow with another reinstallation

also the win 7 and burned win xp discs wont even load only the official does but as i may or may not have said during install the pc goes black midway and reboots.. ive tried other forums no dice so i figured id post it here if anyone has any suggestions please let me know

Sounds like you need to configure your bios correctly before attempting to install OS.

Are you talking about during a windows XP install (F6 drivers)? if so, you can slipstream the drivers to the install disk so you dont need a floppy.

So you've only swopped the MOBO - you've left all the components and alone and purely transfered them over to the new MOBO? Please clarify your post as it's hard to understand.

Are you sure your MOBO will support the OS that your trying to install and will the new MOBO work with the new GPU? Also are you sure your card will fit onto this MOBO?

Make sure that you do not have any standoffs in the wrong spot, a standoff in the wrong spot could cause your board to short. Also, when you say that your friend used your mobo and it worked, are you talking about the new one or the old one??

q1 whats a standoff

q2 all he did was use my new mobo and my current ram the hdd ect was his he also has 5970 the bios flash disc ran and he had win 7 up and running in less them 10 min

basicly he just eliminated me having a bad mobo as a factor befor i RMA'd it

I dunno, just throwing some things out there, not saying any of these things will fix your prob:

- you said that your friend got the motherboard to run with his system, ask him if he could possibly update the bios for you?

- run chkdsk /f if you can get to a command prompt

- as was suggested, check the boot order on your devices in bios if your computer posts

- Try installing windows via a flash drive (google it)

- Try another dvd drive for the Windows install, if you have one lying around

The standoff is that metal peg that you ***** into your case which the motherboard sits on. Basically you only want the standoffs to go where you ***** the motherboard in place. If you have the standoffs in the wrong spot it could cause an electrical short on your board causing some things to not work or you computer to reboot.

Have you tried installing ubuntu or a different OS? At first it seemed like a bootsector error, but since you already tried to re-install the OS kinda throws that idea out the window. Just to be safe pop in your windows disk get into the command prompt and run a checkdsk /f (or /r) and also run a fixmbr. Let me know the results.

Your bios degfinitely needs to be configured. If it says it needs a floppy it is probably trying to boot the os from a floppy that drive that you don't have.

i have the skinny wires that look like sata wires hooked up to the hdds but not the 4pins you think thats it? should i have both. iirc on my old mobo it used the 4 pins but my friend said it was better to use the skinny ones. also i figured when it does run why is it letting me begin to install xp if theres no power to the hdds

opinions?

4 pins... the power? If you're not using sata then you'll need this connected, yes. Also, bios is on your mobo and not on a disc or floppy. When you boot your PC you'll want to hold down the key that corresponds to entering bios. This changes from system to system depending on which type of bios you're using, but usually it is either the delete key or F1 key. I would check both of these first. Either your HD isn't powered(low probability) or your bios is setup to look for sata and you're connected via IDE or vice versa. Possibly you're setup for a raid in bios, but you're only using one HD.
