Its odd to say but I am really loving the gear in this game. I'm only level 17 Gladiator and I already feel bad ***. Working with my friends to make them gear and myself gear gives pride to when you play your character. I cant wait to what they have in store for us around level 40-50. I am sure every single player will look really different and each have a unique bad *** feel to them.

Looking at my friends in their leather-craft/cloth-working gear is just awesome. No matter what class you play the gear is great.

I want to see what the Bronze Scale stuff looks like. I am sure the lancer classes are soaking that gear up. :D

I like the bronze haubergeon set except the coif. Hide helmet is definitly needed. I refuse to use the coif, using an eyepatch instead. (18 LNC here)

I'm curious to know how you find all this awesome gear... and if you have any time left over to actually use it.

Seriously though, I love the concept of crafting and nuances and variations it seems to potentially offer, but its so mired down in a crappy laggy interface its hard for me to get too excited about attaining anything. All I can think about is the millions of slow keypresses it will take me to get to the next rank >.<

For armor I go to the armorer guild in LL and buy from people skilling up there. Works better than even thinking about braving the market wards. For my brass spear I hunted market wards for 4 hours *shudder*.
Edit: I'll put up a picture of full bronze haubergeon set except coif once I finish this local leve im on.

Bronze Haubergeon, Bronze Sollerets. I need to get a bronze plate belt, but it wont look much different, and my pants armor isnt even visible with hauberg and sollerets (Skeepskin skirt), gloves are sheepskin armguards. Doesnt look too bad.

I'm standing here at Camp Tranq and 8/10 players are wearing the exact same haubergeon attire. No one above rank 20 incidently.

well yeah. Bone scale costs the same as bronze hauberg and gives half the defense.

I found that if you play late, you can catch very nice deals from the players around. I was lucky enough to find the Bronze plate belt today for cheap. Our linkshell needs a higher level leather worker so we can all make some good quality stuff. Most of the items I own I made so its not a big deal. But with the help of the leather-crafting items and cloth crafters in my linkshell we are able to make almost anything.

Indecently, every time I run into a new piece of equipment I've been updating the item photos on Zam.

Yeah but I wonder how much penalty you take from the difference from optimal. Would be great if someone could compare the two.
I say this because there was some initial testing that showed that using optimal rank gear, even if it's lower if far more efficient than using over ranked gear. The guy testing showed that a 17 CON weapon had the same stats as a level 1 weapon at level 10 or something.

hate to say this but everyone looks like clones right now. Even the ones that have dyed gear are starting to all look the same.... maybe its the lvl ~30 crafters we have pooping out stuff every 10 seconds

Don't tell them that! The armorers will have a fit if you cut off their Hauby clients. Not to mention the repairs since your gear practically disintegrates when its over leveled.

Maybe then the armorers would grow some balls and try to build me a bronze scale mail suit. Which at rank 19 would give 58 defense.

Everyone wearing the same stuff for now it seems. I'm not sure that it will be true that all the Rank 50's wont become fairly identical over time as well.

What I am seeing though, is that ability-wise, each player has a different idea of what to put on their pallet, depending on what they have unlocked.

I expect Rank 50 will have some people that determine certain abilities are absolutely necessary. Showing up for a party and they say, "What, no Invigorate?" Boot.

Let's hope that people will appreciate the diversity of abilties. I'm curious to see if there will be a required "best way", or if a game full of unique hybrid characters is in store for the future.

Why would you want less str, GATHERING, and barely more def, and as you level the hauberg just gets better and better? Also, hauberg gets damaged slower than a proper-level weapon. Much slower. I've had mine 3 days and it hasn't gotten to damaged stage yet.

Every. Single. Stat. Is. Lower. I just used defense as an example. The only difference is as far as I've heard the stats wont go below 1 so you get your +1str as a level 1 wearing the Bronze Haubergon.

When the Hauby is the best piece of armor for me stat wise thats when I'll use it. Not going to be cheap and save my gil and be subpar.

By every stat is lower, you mean 3 str and 2 dex at rank 18 is lower than 2 str and 2 MIND at rank 19 with bronze scale? Derp de derrr.

Evasion doesnt matter, mag def barely matters. Enemy accuracy is so high even a pgl spamming their +eva buff almost never evades. The only enemies that really use magic are imps, and even at higher ranks they die faster than they can cast. Yes bronze scale has higher def. For 1-2 ranks. I'm gaining 4-5 def per rank from the hauberg.
And as far as looking average... So what? theres very few unique armor pieces.

I swear I'm not trolling you here but if you think evasion is useless then you are playing wrong. Neither my (lol)lancer or my Marauder any problems evading regularly. Especially when I made the switch from weathered gear.

As for Magic Defense, I guess your right, you only need it if you're fighting imps, or Wights, or that one thaum with the assassins. I'm sure there isn't more, if you do some exploring, either.

edit: Regularly evading doesn't mean as often as mobs evade my attacks though.

I have never evaded a same-level mob. Ever. When im fighting blues, sure I evade occasionally, but I dont need evades to beat them so it doesnt matter. the only time an evade will save me, it cant.

The way I look at it is... I take less damage then my friends in a group. A significant amount. My thaumaturge friend will take 250dmg as I only take 70. but honestly I don't really care about game mechanics right now. As I haven't hit 20 on my Gladiator so I still feel like I'm in the newbie places.

Ive been wearing my hauby for a week and I have yet had a need to repair it... its only 2 bronze rings, anyway my main is a 20 Armorer so big whoop. At the moment mostly all the repair mats are a joke especially since I have a crap ton of extra mats from crafting.

But seriously folks. Bottom line is the gear in this game is awesome looking. Even the subligar looks good. =P

Nope. It could be that my parrys pre-empty evades. (I like parrys more anyways, they give job exp, evades dont)

That's someone speculating. If it does indeed take Buffalo leather it will cost a lot more than a Hauby anyway.

That is indeed someone speculating but judging by the bone scale mail recipe I would say thats probably pretty close to the mark.

Yes it would be more expensive currently. That's essentially the main problem with Haubergeon's and why they are so popular. They shouldn't be so cheap to make comparatively, especially in a game where you can wear them at anytime .

I assume buffalo leather will come down in price with time though.

i am a proud wearer of sheepskin subligar and harness. my enemies cower in terror at the size of my meaty roegadyn thighs, displayed proudly in the pale moonlight, a thin sheen of sweat reflecting the light off of every curve and detail, my proud roegadyn chest, rippling with muscle, vividly displayed as the axe blade comes down between their eyes.

The linked item is Bone Scale Mail (Grey) (rank 14), not Bronze Scale Mail (rank 19). The bronze trim is specifically stated as Red Ochre Buffalo Leather Trim. So I am going to continue to assume its made of Buffalo.

Even the bondage-style Pugilist harness and subligar? All that's missing from that getup is a ball-gag.

Check this link out: http://ffxiv.zam.com/wiki/FFXIV_Macros

For mining:
/equip main "Weathered Pickaxe"
/wait 2
/equip sub "Bronze Sledgehammer"

Back to fighting:
/equip main "Weathered Spear" (or whatever weapon you are using)

If you try to manually swap out weapons and tools you will hate it and avoid it, like you've done. I did the same during beta. Trust me, taking 30second to make a couple macros will save you tons of time, and tons of headaches. It will make crafting/gathering far more accessible.
